BACK TO THE COAST (24 mile circular hike) Prawle Point - South Devon

  • After what seems like an age, Trev is back where he loves solo hiking the most, on the South West Coast Path, and this time a 20 mile circular walk around Prawle Point...
For the first time since lockdown, Trev heads to the coast, South Devon to be precise and a hike around East Prawle, Devon's most southerly point and the site of many a shipwreck. As training for his massive Dartmoor in a day hike that is coming up soon, he has devised thislengthy 20 mile (plus) circular walk, which starts at the car park at Torcross, (where the Sherman Tank stands in memory of the 700 US soldiers lost during live ammo training operations in preparation to D-Day) and then heads South around the rugged but beautiful South Devon Coastline, passing the lighthouse at Start Point, the lookout station at Prawle Point, the impressive mountainous cliffs of Gammon Head, until reaching the sandy beaches of Portlecombe opposite Salcombe, for a lengthy inland trek across the winding country roads back to the car. Its a day of two halves, or three thirds, as its wet in the morning, making for an atmospheric but moody walk, then glorious in the afternoon, before the monotonous lull of road walking to end with.

I don't know if it is an annual event, but the article in Dartmoor News recons that walkers took 12 hours and runners did it in 6. So, there you go, run it. I don’t like walking on roads with nothing but hedgerows, nice as the greenery can be. If I have to walk on the roads, I try to plan them first to get them out the way. However after that length of walk I’m sure the flatter terrain under foot is nice too!

Even today the whole village is at risk when it's a SE gale.

20 miles...I am exhausted just thinks about that. Loved the tank but sad to see the memorial of all those lost lives and all so young as well, I'll bet. The weather is real weird at the moment, either oppressively hot or blowing a gale and hammering it down, tough call on getting a soaking, especially early doors. Good to see the weather improve for you but 7 miles road walking owtch! Bet you were pleased to see that tank again at the end and well done of walking 20 miles, although, it was not that many years ago I used to do the Great North Run and doing 13 miles in just over 2 hours.....maybe that is why my knees are bloody knackered owtch x 2! Strangely, I have never had any trouble with any boot that I own. I have never had a blister. The Burghaus were a strange boot - they were comfy, but the mid ankle used to catch me out, I would always feel more prone to rolling my ankle in them than other boots or even trainers. That being said, it was my burghaus boots I wore on the tarka Trail stretch of the SWCP between Wward Ho! and Braunton and my legs / feet hurt all over... more muscular pain that blisters! More agony than pain!

Hi, great video! I was wondering which oex jacket is that and would you recommend it?

Hi ya Conner - I did a video where I slated it - but to be honest, as a water proof jacket it seems to work, trouble is it doesn't seem very breathable. BUt I have been told that more pricier jackets are much the same, so I have continued to wear it... Its always a little hit and miss with OEX stuff!

@@SummitOrNothing I've been looking for a light weight shell for a while, I stay up north in Scotland where the rain gets rather tropical!! I'll check the video out, but I know what you mean with the breathability, last thing you want is the boil in a bag kind!

I'm 41 - was 37 when I started walking - and the first mountain (SNowdon) after just three bimbles on Dartmoor was areal killer. What helped me get into shape was the coast walking. Great way to train. Ive not done a mountain solo yet, either. I always feel safer in a group or with someone else at least. Thanks for watching!

@@SummitOrNothing nah. Walk at a pace that's comfortable. I allow 3mph when walking but also allow for regular short rests, my knees ain't what they was. 😂

Beaches were empty people must of heeded the Government warning

They were... I have a feeling that some of these beaches are lesser known beauty spots and perhaps quite remote to get to.
