This was a very informative video so thank you for showing the proper and respectful way of completing the task. I am sure that there are many more crypts such as these in existence. The challenge is seeing if the local church or other authority have kept accurate records on how each gravesite was prepared. I am glad that this video will be available to people who may come across a similar plot. Cheers!
This tomb was opened and closed for the last time in 2016 for the last remaining member of the family, the purpose for this clip is to show how it is done if access is ever required again. The contents of the tomb are not for public display.
the story of the people buried here would be private, but it looks like the US and likey in the Southern part of the country, judging by the overgrowth around it
You might be right, with water I doubt they would be burying people in basically whats similar to a root cellar and still be that dry, plus the dirt is not red like I saw in the south. Its just its so over grown around it and green, made me think it might be when I first saw this
This is an amazing bit of footage that answers my question about George Formby's grave in Warrington Cheshire.I couldn't picture what his brother Ted was telling us about how the bodies are at the back in a little room under the headstone. Thanks for posting.
I see the comments of people asking about the purpose of this video. It was explained by MrSphinxandy 7 months ago. It was opened and closed for the last remaining member of the family. He also says the contents of the tomb are not for public display, so they didn't show who was brought into the tomb. I've seen huge tombstones like this also, and never knew how they were buried. Very informative.
Tony D what was so informative? You dig a large hole, line it with bricks. Then have your remains inserted.. and your future generations can rest beside you. (In peace ) read a book... they can tell you burial methods going back thousands of years. They even have pictures.
MrSphinxandy thanks now l know how to disturb the resting dead. I could have just read a book on burial practices. Because 150 or so years burial methods is whay different. Or even better you could dig up our civil war dead! Or the black slaves.. not forgetting the native americans. It's sure to get you many more subscribers.
I didn't either, I would think there could be water issues having this, its a little like a old root cellar. It looks like its could be in the South with all the over growth around it and they get a lot of rain
A crypt sounds so much better than a grave. A crypt, your body is in a room. In a grave, your covered in earth in a hole in the ground, no getting out to stretch your leggs. In a crypt, now you got a little room to move around in. When your dead your dead right,,, if you could choose a grave or a crypt while your checking off this rock, what would it be for you, leave comment, could get interesting?
There’s a steel platform covering the stairs. Hence why the crowbars to remove it and put it back in place. This is to make sure the ground doesn’t collapse....
I don't think I could bring myself to go in there. Not because of fear of zombies or ghosts or whatever other nonsense, but just because it seems like it would be really NASTY in there. Moldy decaying bodies and no fresh air circulating.... Makes me shudder to think about it.
If someone’s curious enough to gain access to the stone stair-case, I hardly think a veneer of bricks will discourage them from proceeding further. There’s plenty of room to swing a sledge hammer. A solid brick wall would resist all but the most determined effort and I suspect the owner of the tomb intended a solid brick wall be erected, not a veneer of bricks, regardless of the mortar used.
I'm not sure where you live, but in the UK we don't get graverobbers any more. Certainly not ones prepared to locate the edge of and lever up a massive slate slab, then smash through a mortared brick wall, no matter how badly erected you think it is. If they're THAT keen, said sledgehammer would easily get through a properly bricked single leaf wall as well. It would just take a little longer. And to what end? There's nothing in there but human remains.
It would require a lot if work and grave robbers prefer easier targets. The professionals made moving the slab look easy but amateurs would not be so skilled. Also covering the slab w dirt would make it appear less obvious. As for bricking up the entrance, I would think that was a sign it is at capacity or that the last loved one was there and now no more. It was very interesting cos I wondered how the entry stairs were concealed. Now I know.
"The contents of the tomb are not for public display." Sorry but that's not strictly true, there is a local area history website featuring this family vault, there are photos inside of all the coffins and the cremated remains that are on top of one of the coffins on the far left hand side. You're teasing a bit by saying this, lol. With that said it's still not my place to say where this is or the name of the family, i'll give you that. Nice time lapse video.

Above the water table, so any water drains naturally. Cemeteries were not usually built on boggy ground or where groundwater levels were within six feet of the surface.
