    Hi there. I just found your video since learning about the Portfolio Diet 20 minutes ago - yes, your video is the first I've watched. I have been vegan for 8 years. In that time I have only had my lipids checked twice. First time was 2 years ago and second time was last Monday. (Bad I know - I'm getting myself on track to better body awareness/self-care now). Although my total chol. went down a little, my HDL went down (bad) and my LDL up (bad). I'm considered "borderline". I have a plant based lifestyle medicine doctor who doesn't seem overly concerned. I, however, am concerned about continuing a trend to worsening cholesterol. I know my problem areas and I want to make changes. It's just hard. I sympathize with you regarding finding it hard to stick to certain changes whether dietary or exercise - you name it. I just hit "subscribe" and am looking forward to watching the continuation of your Portfolio Diet journey. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Thanks for getting in touch Brian! I was super impressed (and quite honestly shocked) with how well this plan worked for lowering my cholesterol! LOL! Please let me know if you have any questions about the diet. It was definitely a more difficult challenge but not so hard it couldn't become a lifestyle change...definitely better than taking cholesterol medicine if you dont have too! :) Best of luck and let me know your results!

    Thanks for the great video - sometimes it takes time - be careful with soy - try the fermented version like tempeh or fermented tofu as it has goitrogenic properties and I've heard of people getting thyroid issues. Best of luck !😇🐰👍

    Adding garlic supplements or just eating a garlic a day with a little bit of olive oil lowers your cholesterol levels.

    Hi Heather I’m wondering why your ldl went up when you switched to a whole food plant based diet. My understanding is that switching to a Wfpb diet results in a drop in saturated fat consumption and increase in soluable fibre which then causes lowering of ldl. Why do you think your ldl went up? Were there any other changes to your lifestyle at that time that would influence ldl such as gaining weight, less exercise. And reading the comments I see other vegans have high cholesterol. I just switched to wfpb diet to lower my ldl but now I’m wondering if eliminating fish and lean meat will make any difference.

    • @k.h.6991
      @k.h.6991 Před rokem

      Eliminating meat should definitely be helpful. Eliminating fish is not necessary, I think. But for the portfolio diet you would probably want to replace fish with soy.
      Vegans are not always eating as much 'whole food' as you would think. There's loads of vegan junk foods out there. There is saturated fat from coconut and palm in a LOT of foods. That's not good for heart health, but it IS plant based. (not whole food)

    Dr. Caldwell esselstyn says no nuts no oil of any kind I'm so confused out here these days just don't understand anymore

    • @chewzingplants1005
      @chewzingplants1005  Před 5 lety +1

      My take on this is if you already have preexisting heart disease (from years of poor eating habits or unfortunate genetics) then following his method of eating would be in your best interest. Nuts are not inherently bad for you but there are certainly situations where they shouldn't be included in your diet. Dr Jenkins Portfolio Diet definitely works for lowering cholesterol (super healthy) but cardiovascular disease can definitely occur without elevated cholesterol levels.
      If there was only one doctor that I could pick to have someone follow, it would probably be Dr. Fuhrman. It seems the Nutritarian lifestyle would be one of the best options out there. However, everyone's body is different and everyone comes from different levels of health.
      Please let me know if you have any other questions. I will certainly try to answer them if possible. Take care! :)

      Thank you Sooo much for your reply.. You do know what your talking about.. Yes, bad genetics.. Calcium score of 270.. Was on 5mg Crestor for 2 weeks and thought I was dying.. Side effects were so frightening horrible. I'm on Esselstyn's diet for past 2 months.. Lost 30 lbs already.. Feel pretty good.. I just want to live and enjoy life again before I found out about my heart disease.. I have no symptoms and can easily walk 5 miles without any problems... I'm 54.. I want to be here for another 20 years... Your thoughts are so valued ❤

      My take on that is that low oil is mostly a weight loss thing. For heart disease, liquid food oils are fine. Eating nuts and seeds, also peanut butter, are associated with LESS heart disease.

      Esselstyn deals with mostly ppl who have already had cardio events and are in trouble. Like myself. My take is for preventative diet take the nuts. For damage control don’t use them. Sadly I have to quit them. Hope that helps.

    hi, i just finished watching all of the videos for portfolio diet. i’m going to try it because your results are impressive. my dr prescribed a statin. i won’t take it until i’ve tried everything i can to do it naturally. how has your cholesterol been since stopping the portfolio diet?

    • @chewzingplants1005
      @chewzingplants1005  Před 4 lety +1

      I had my cholesterol checked at my last doctor visit and it was every bit as good as right after the portfolio diet. I can't remember the numbers but I was super pleased and so was my doctor! Currently, I tend to eat more soy and beans than I think alot of people do but I don't have nuts very often at all. The only supplement from this challenge that I routinely still take is the beta-sterol simply because it is so easy to get in my diet.
      Please feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions. I am at ChewzingPlants on Facebook messenger and gmail. :) Good luck! I am excited to hear about your results too!

      Chewzing Plants thank you for your reply. i started the diet today but i’ve been taking the sterols in capsule form for 10 weeks & using soy milk. i’m now bumping up the soy to the recommended 50 grams. it’s hard because i don’t really like the taste of the soy protein powder. still using it though because i want the good results you got. i put the psyllium in my oatmeal, pancakes & muffins. i might have to try mixing it with water & drinking it to get all that is required. nuts are no problem, i love them. i’ll message you on messenger & let you know how it’s going.

    Thank you for this video. Before I was vegan I had bypass surgery with 5 vessels replaced and have subsequently had 4 other MI's. I've been vegan 3 years my cholesterol has been very good. My cardiologist added zetia to my Crestor. I just had my 1 month bloodwork and my total cholesterol is elevated to 213 and the LDL is 137. I'm blown away. I feel defeated so upon doing my research I found the Portfolio diet and then I came across your video and we have a similar challenge. Do you have a resource of where its all broken down easily for you I'm trying to find that. Thanks for sharing your information! I see my cardiologist today!

      I am so sorry to hear about your struggles!!! Please don't feel defeated! I emailed with Dr David Jenkins about his program and he was very gracious and responsive. Basically his research has shown that if you follow their program, the results are similar to what I experienced. The difference in my cholesterol was truly amazing! Are you not worried about the soy/breast cancer link?

    • @chewzingplants1005
      @chewzingplants1005  Před 5 lety +5

      Honestly, I am completely confident that consuming soy won't increase my risk for breast cancer. Take a peek at this article by Dr Greger and let me know what you think. bit.ly/300SpEU
      That being said, I don't still consume this much soy on a daily basis. My cholesterol at the 15 month year mark has stayed within a few points of where it was after the Portfolio Diet. (YEAH!!!) I do still use the Beta Phystosterol (1 tsp a day which = about 1750 mg). I also try to consume a lot of soluble fiber and do continue to enjoy soy foods, like soy curls and tofu.

I went back and watched Day 2 and didn't find anything that warranted a follow up, so please let me know what I can do to help you find what you are looking for. Look forward to hearing from you again!
      BTW...I saw that you liked a video from Dr Greger. Amazing guy yes? Did you see the interview he did with Plant Based News called Why Doctors Don't Recommend Veganism? Absolutely love that interview series!

    I just watched your "Portfolio Diet Challenge - Lowering Cholesterol Naturally" where you were starting the Portfolio diet, you talked about doing a 2nd day of this information, but I don't see it.
    Did you do the follow-up video? If so, title? I'd really like to know if this diet is just impossible. I have trouble before starting b/c soy gives me gas - so how would I deal with that?

    • @chewzingplants1005
      @chewzingplants1005  Před 5 lety

      Hi Diane! Are you maybe referring to the supplements that I used for this challenge? During the Day 1 video (czcams.com/video/BsEBW3ocCzo/video.html), I go over the powders that I used in smoothies to help me get enough of the soluble fiber, plant sterols and soy protein that are required.

    • @chewzingplants1005
      @chewzingplants1005  Před 5 lety +2

      Have you ever checked to see if you are allergic to soy instead of just intolerant to the digestion of soy...that might be a good thing to know. Also, I am wondering if all soy products give you gas or just specific ones? Maybe tofu is a problem but soy curls are ok? Have you tried soy protein powder with similar results? If all else fails, you could take 160mg of Simethicone with each soy meal you consume to try to offset gas. (Simethicone is available over-the-counter at most retail pharmacies). From what I understand, your body should eventually adjust to the digestion of the soy and decrease the gas production. I hope this helps...please let me know how things go for you or if you have any other questions!
