    Why is high frequency trading even legal? If they want to regulate markets then put rate limits on how many orders you can put in per second. That’s what exchanges in the crypto space do with their API, and that’s in an UNREGULATED market.

    I trade or watch trades every day and have seen these mini flash crashes it is almost like a slip a deep slip then it catches itself and starts to trade normal again right after. I need to get around as I have promised I would to myself of putting in silly low ball limit orders to take advantage of these but forget during the heat of the day. I have always wondered if someone is doing it on purpose to allow a friend to get a lesser price on a hot stock. We will never really know.

    As a small (retail) investor aware of this front-running I always place limit orders, never place a market order that is open to being exploited. In fact, placing limit orders allows us small fish (retail) to take advantage of market manipulation by (professional investors - algorithms/hedge funds/trading desks/high frequency quants) at times such as sudden momentary spikes in prices designed to trip stop losses. Hey, I wonder if only retail traders set stop losses.

    At the end of the day everyone is trying to one up the next. That alone self regulates things. You have problems when only one or two entities have the power to do something.

    • @conors4430
      @conors4430 Před 5 lety +3

      Parallel Burrito everyone trying to one up the next doesn’t self regulate, because the key people involved in the trade are able to dictate the rules, meaning they can solidify their position and end up coming out on top regardless of the customer. That’s not self-regulation. That kind of thinking is purely a utopian fantasy which inevitably leads to cartels forming

    Cuban has no clue how this affects the small investor who buys 100 shares which are bundled as institutional "buys". Bundled individual investors lose just the same as the big ones when they are within the same order. Cuban tends to be out of touch with those beneath him in the socio-economic order. Too many people soak his words up as gospel, like millennials. I'd rather be poor and honest and have integrity than spew garbage which is self serving, and slightly off base.

      I just actually think you know very little about the high frequency trading algos, and even less about what he is explaining is the truly scary thing about these algos. Nothing to do with rich or poor at all, more so man getting screwed by machine...

    • @turtlewrestler1
      @turtlewrestler1 Před 5 lety

      @@xfactorb25222 Cuban mentions the unknown elements of the algorithms which clearly indicates the extent of the ignorance of them. I'll admit that I know nothing about the code of them. It's not man getting screwed by the machine when man creates the algos. Man is screwing man as usual. It has potential of unfair advantages of those with the most effective algos, which is wrong. Institutional gains and losses from the influence of algos in high freq. trading can indeed impact the little guys when their profits and/or losses are in funds which are traded by the institutions. In addition, algos, gone awry may have an unintended influence on the market which could prove to be deleterious to the markets. Please note that I made no mention of rich or poor. A small market investor is not necessarily poor. You appear to be yet another over opinionated and judgmental troll. Sorry, my words. I don't claim to know everything but have no shame or regrets for being average, or poor as you have deemed me to be.

      @@turtlewrestler1 here's our issue... Cuban, you, and I are all on the same page. I just don't think you are seeing that. I'm not trolling you, I'm definitely not a millennial, I'm a small construction company owner who has been trading for a long time (by no means "rich"). You are correct about man made the algos, so man is technically screwing man... that is just semantics though, especially considering that once they are designed, they tend to decide to do their own thing.
      you obviously have a problem with Cuban. lol, fair enough. But, on this issue He's 100% in the right. High Frequency Trading should be a criminal act just like inside trading is, in my opinion. That won't happen for a long while I'm sure, it at least needs some laws put into place immediately. I'll leave you a little link to check out, maybe you'll sadly have to say you agree with him. lol, it may hurt, but still.
      HFT only hurts the human investor, ESPECIALLY the day or swing trader. I want you to think of being in a great trade... you're about to take profit... then for one second, the market crashes, hits your stop loss... you lose. THEN, it goes right back to where it should be... but too late, you're out of the trade... and why? Because bots are fighting or glitching? Nope, don't like it. unintentional or not. -czcams.com/video/z4nCTdQlH8w/video.html

    Don't think I agree with Mark here. Bug free software, true, although flash crashes hardly effect the overall market short term. Algorithmic traders trying to "trick" each other? Different algorithmic traders can run profitably better trade software than any (more populous) common investor.

    the snickers bar analogy is incorrectly presented here. Almost convinces that the faster participants deserve the advantage. but that is not the issue. if there is a discount, you would want the the discount provider (market exchange) to spread the the information about the upcoming discount to all the participant so that they all become aware of the discount rate at the same time. if it fails to do so, lets say letting exclusive members know of the discount rate first hand is the equivalent of existing market exchange letting HFT traders know share price before it reaches to buyers, which results in an unfair advantage hence by definition a rigged market. That is what Michael Lewis talked about in the book Flash Boys, as simple as that. cannot believe its so hard for people to grasp this simple truth. Or do ppl like Mark Cuban has incentive in the market so they would throw dust to confuse people and exploit the system for their self interest.
