  • Kari Longman speaks to us from Utrecht in the Netherlands. She and her family moved in July 2019.
Kari grew up as an English-speaking South African and chats to Voertaal about learning Dutch and getting to know the Dutch way of life.
She is frank about some of the ups and downs her kids have experienced and urges families to plan any move carefully, because the cultural differences are huge.
“So much is so different,” she says. Often the challenges lie in the unexpected things, like getting to and from school, or finding a doctor and hairdresser one is comfortable with.
The delights of cycling, for young and old, even with groceries, get some happy airtime - and laughs.
Because they have opened themselves up to the Dutch way of life, the Longmans are happy in the Netherlands.
This is a frank, but funny, interview about making a huge transition.

Dutchie born in Joburg, we moved back in 76, thank God. Even my stubborn aunt moved back 2 years ago, too dangerous and hard to find a job in SA. She's 64 and she is having the time of her life.

For my south african niece I tried to arrange a job as a nurse, and the Dutch
hospital was very interested even if she already was around 55. Think about that if you are a careworker and you want to leave South Africa.

You cant compare the two countries surely. Did you live in a gated estate in SA?
My sister was mugged four times in a year in Jo'burg.

For this lady New Zealand would be a much better option , plenty of South Africans here , she can go for safe runs for miles , plenty of mountains , better climate than Nederland.
I am from the Netherlands living 41 years in News Zealand and loving it.

I agree with planning and making sure you know just how big the move is etc but, it also depends, for example, on the size of your family. A single person might not need as much time as a couple with three children.

Imagine having the initiative to emigrate to the Netherlands, but to google for athletic clubs.
There are at least 3, Hellas, Phoenix and U-Track.

Several. If you take a good look you will find sport, fitness, pilates, yoga. All over the country, even in little villages.

Utrecht, a good choice. There is a conservatory, so there must be musicians. And Utrecht is certainly not a smaller Amsterdam, never say that again please. Utrecht is way older, a 1000 years or so.

Welkom Kari.

People, unless it’s really, really urgent DO NOT MOVE To The Netherlands. There is a HUGE housing problem. People live with their parents up to their 30th year, and overbidding on houses over € 50.000 are common. Social housing, waiting lists are over 10 years. And yes, there is still green meadows, cause it’s a law to keep the area between the 5 big cities green and you can’t only keep on building. Do reconsider your plans, and keep in mind 40% is below sea level😉

Typical .. oh wel , rifraf van elders hoeven geen inburgerings curses te doen, maar ja zo gaat het tegenwoordig. Je had een hoofd-doekje op moeten doen.
