My Rare Land Rover Has Been Neglected (By Me) - Time To Change That

  • Today we spend some time with one of my favorite Land Rovers. Yes, the Eco Challenge Discovery. This is just 1 of 28 that were built off XD model Discoveries to support the Discovery Channel TV show.
    I haven't done much with this lately and all of the steel parts have been looking pretty sad. So we pull everything off and give them a fresh truck bed liner finish.

    Beautiful Disco and a great job on the off-road parts! I would polish and wax the old paint.

      Appreciate that, it looks a little more cared for now.
      It has a some goofy sprayed on touch up so it may need a bit of wet sanding as well.

    Great to see the Eco Disco receiving a bit of well needed love and attention 😂. Totally agree on the paint job, it needs to stay as is simply because it tells her story / history of this amazing vehicle, if only she could talk 🤔 Look forward to seeing you use her the muddy stuff. Keep up the great work. 👍😎

    Tree-1, TJ tailgate-0. Funny thing is my YJ tailgate has a (much smaller) dent in the same spot. That out of place road rig almost looked like a Dakar rally support rig. Quick question on the ECO- Those angled cables. Are they windshield savers for tree limbs? Edit- You answered that. Was just about to chime in about patina preservation and you beat me to it. Yep. Patina clear would do the job. Love seeing a loved and used rig driven and enjoyed.

      I'm a rover guy who's had both. The D1 is simple like a YJ and is slept on massively. I had a TJ and D2 as well, both good trucks but the TJ was much more reliable but not quite as capable before I modified it.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 11 měsíci +1

      This era of Land Rover is pretty neat, not overly complicated and decently capable. Just a little harder than Jeeps to acquire parts/modifications for in this side of the pond. It is hard to beat a Wrangler for the just doing the job off road but I love these quirky things.

    What undercoating did ya use on the body where the sliders mount? I'm looking to rust treat and coat my frame on my LS disco (thanks for the videos!) And would like to do it right.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I just used some Rust-Oleum “pro-grade” stuff.
      Depending on exactly what you are looking for I prefer to coat my stuff with woolwax or fluid film. It’s lanolin oil, not permanent. I do it before each winter on whatever I’m driving. It is kind of self healing, it does wear off in high spray areas over time (wheel wells).
      You can get it in black or clear.

    Just curious, do you have any recommendations for replacing the roof rain channels on D1s/D2s? Finding replacements is impossible, but I would think someone could bend metal or something DYI to easily replace the factory plastic.
    Thanks for the video!!!

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 11 měsíci

      Are you looking for just the plastic trim to be replaced? Or the actual channel that is part of the roof? The plastic trim is definitely brittle over time.

    Well shame on your for neglecting old yeller😅.
    Hey I own a 2010 LR4 5.0 . Have you ever figured out a fix for the horn blaring at very inconvenient times on these things. Mine always seems to do it this time of the year in the early morning hours and it's not making my neighbors real happy .one is an RN nurse that works long shifts and needs her rest and doesn't appreciate being woken up by a land rover that gets Horny now and then 😂😅 if you no of anything I can do I would appreciate it. I did change out the hood latch like others said to do and seemed like that worked for a yr or so but the gremlin is back and proud

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 11 měsíci

      Haha as it turns out I’m my own worst enemy.
      It is probably a door latch. Do you ever have it honk at you and not lock while trying to lock it? The hood latch is more common but we have replaced a fair amount of door latches for the same issue. Man is that an annoying problem to have isn’t it?

    • @dandaniels4558
      @dandaniels4558 Před 11 měsíci

      No just the beep when a door isn't shut tight but the horn hasn't honked when locking it.
      I'm usually in bed and wake to it blasting away in the driveway .
      It did it in the middle of the night one time and I never heard it and my nurse neighbor said it did it for along time before it finally quit that's when I changed the passenger side hood latch that was like $90.
      It's very frustrating knowing fall is either coming or now here and it's happened twice so far. There's just something about the fall damn cool air and it seems to always happen at about 60 degrees and damp out. Im not a climate change nut but this land rover is 😅.
      But I love it to much to get rid of it so my neighbors are just going to have to deal with it.
      Thanks for replying to my question. 👍

    • @jxke
      @jxke Před 11 měsíci

      @@LostCauseRanch Yeah. I just stripped the plastic off of mine and running the stock metal bumpers behind it, rewired turn signals to go to the main taillights. I have some Hella lights mounted to the front bumper. I just recently Raptor lined my entire Discovery 2 in black since the original black paint was completely burnt. It looks pretty awesome. Gotten quite a few compliments in public about it. I need to do an interior clean up and find clean looking headlights. I had to strip out my headliner fabric and I haven't decided on what I'm going to do on replacing it yet because I cannot get the sunroofs to stop leaking. I've blown all the lines out with air and checked the plastic trays. Caulked all around them. Still have a wet cargo area when it rains. Also got a weird vibration at idle in gear. I've done MAF, Bosch O2's, Brand new Bosch fuel pump, New Spark plugs, PCV bypass mod, Tightened down all of the intake gaskets. No resolution. lol.

    • @LostCauseRanch
      @LostCauseRanch  Před 11 měsíci +1

      They are from the old school Safari Gard.
      They are fairly simple in design. A similar design was made for the D2 as well. The bottom of the door line just has a small curve so you just either have to roll or cut and bend the tube to match that.
