Stand up now, diggers all.
I both love and hate the fact that "Against lawyers, stand up now" is a line from a song 300 years old, and could be a line from a punk song today
The Cutty Wren always sends a shiver down my spine.
Had this on vinyl.
Very topical right now.
Its always been topical sadly
I still have the vinyl.. Timeless!

Still Absolutely Brilliant I'm Still Listening Too CHUMBAWAMBA Now Just Like I Have Always Ever Done From Day One. How I Still Miss Those Fantastic Concerts, Memories Are Forever Fresh And Exciting Still. Thanks For Sharing
Chartist Anthem
A hundred years, a thousand years, we're marching on the road
The going isn't easy yet, we've got a heavy load, oh we've got a heavy load
The way is blind with blood and sweat, and death sings in our ears
But time is marching on our side, we will defeat the years, oh we will defeat the years
We men of bone of shrunken shank, our only treasure doth,
Women who carry at their breast heirs to the hungry earth, oh heirs to the hungry earth
Speak with one voice, we march, we rest, and march again upon the years
Sons of our sons are listening to hear the Chartist cheers
Oh, to hear the Chartists cheers
Seditionist!
Oh to hear the Brexit cheers
I never knew there was a Diggers song . THANK YOU !
my favorite chumbawamba album..thank you so much for uploading this!!
I love the second song, "Stand up Now".
Well this is beautiful. Classic English rebel songs are without compare.
I clicked on this wondering what English rebel songs would be, I was pleasantly suprised. Good to know that's what this stuff is called in England!
You're right. These are awesome. Hundreds of years of speaking truth to power!
@@katanah3195 it's not, theres no such thing as english rebel songs
@@dubfox1691the luddites just never existed then
Irish?🤮@@dubfox1691
The first people oppressed by the English were the English
I bought the 10" of this when it came out and I remember being totally confused. But as we did back then when you bought a record you just kept going back to it and eventually it grew on me.

Poverty Knock
[Chorus
'Poverty poverty knock,' my loom is a saying all day
Poverty poverty knock, gaffer's too skinny to pay
Poverty poverty knock, keeping one eye on the clock
I know I can guttle when I hear my shuttle go, 'poverty poverty knock'
Up every morning at five, I wonder that we keep alive
Tired and yawning in the cold morning
It's back to the dreary old drive.
[Chorus]
Oh dear we're going to be late
Gaffer is stood at the gate
We're out of pockets, our wages they'll dock it
We'll have to buy grub on the slate
[Chorus]
And when our wages they'll bring, we're often short of a string
While we are fighting with gaffer for snatching (?)
We know to his breast he will cling
[Chorus]
Sometimes a shuttle flies out
and gives some poor woman a clout
There she lies bleeding but nobody's heeding
Oh who's going to carry her out?
[Chorus]
Oh dear, my poor head it sings
I should have woven three strings
My threads are breaking and my back is aching
Oh dear, I wish I had wings
Poverty poverty knock
Poverty poverty knock
Poverty poverty knock
I had this as a ten inch white vinyl album.
The Triumph of General Ludd
No more chant your old rhymes about old Robin Hood
His feats I do little admire
I'll sing the achievements of General Ludd
Now the hero of Nottingham Shire
Those engines of mischief were sentenced to die
By unanimous vote of the trade
And Ludd who cannot a position defy
Was the grand executioner made
Whether guarded by soldiers along the highway
Or closely secured in a room
He shivers them up by night and by day
And nothing can soften their doom
Shall the whole team of humble no longer oppressed
And shall Ludd sheath his conquering sword
Be his grievance instantly met with redress
Than peace shall be quickly restored
Let the wise and the great lend their aid and advice
Never ere their assistance withdraw
Till full-fashioned work at the old-fashioned price
Is established by custom and law
Luddite. its the origin of the word.

If you want to find the general
I know where he is

I know where he is
If you want to find the general
I know where he is
He's pinning another medal on his chest
I saw him, I saw him
Pinning another medal on his chest
Pinning another medal on his chest
If you want to find the colonel
I know where he is
I know where he is
I know where he is
If you want to find the colonel
I know where he is
He's sitting in comfort stuffing his bloody gut
I saw him, I saw him
Sitting in comfort stuffing his bloody gut
If you want to find the sergeant
I know where he is
I know where he is
I know where he is
If you want to find the sergeant
I know where he is
He's drinking all the company rum
I saw him, I saw him
Drinking all the company rum
Drinking all the company rum
If you want to find the private
I know where he is
I know where he is

OMG, what even are you, some kind of filthy pacifist?
Smashing of the Van
Attend you gallant Irishmen and listen for a while
I'll sing to you the praises of the sons of Erin's Isle
It's of those gallant heroes who voluntarily ran
To release two Irish shamrocks from an English prison van
[Chorus]
My lads for freedom, let's all join heart and hand
May the Lord have mercy on the boys that helped to smash the van
On the eighteenth of September, it was a dreadful year
When sorrow and excitement ran throughout all Lancashire
At a gathering of the Irish boys they volunteered each man
To release those Irish prisoners out of the prison van
[Chorus]
In Manchester one morning those heroes did agree
Their leaders, Kelly and Deasy, should have their liberty
They drank a health to Ireland and soon made up the plan
To meet the prisoners on the road and take and smash the van
[Chorus]
With courage bold those heroes went and soon the van did stop
They cleared the guards from back and front and then smashed in the top
But in blowing open of the lock, they chanced to kill a man
So three men must die on the scaffold high for smashing of the van
[Chorus]
So now kind friends I will conclude, I think it would be right
That all true-hearted Irishmen together should unite
Together should sympathize, my friends, and do the best we can
To keep the memories ever green of the boys that smashed the van
[Chorus]
Croppy, lie down!
i was not expecting to find this when i decided to look up more work by chumbawamba omg

Alright I'm off to the woods
what does it say that this is my #1 album for listening when I'm working?
Thanks for uploading this, I prefer the original recording but you can't find all the tracks on CZcams.
it's so fi#ing wrong and tragic that these songs are still relevent /love chumbie hate tories
There's no difference between any of the parties. Zero. Replace "Tories" with "parliament".
I thought WOW there's another Chumbawamba! But, turns out, this is the very same Chumbawamba.
they have quite a range!
@@nim3277 Indeed, it's a pleasant surprise!
❤
I would love to find the original CD.
Smashing of the van is irish about the Manchester martyrs 1867of the Fenian era
Sadly, still relevant today as it was in the 1300's, 1400's and beyond
The rich have always took the piss

I was pleasantly wrong about whom made this album :P
Together were strong against the politic
Thnaks amazing..checkout Midlake late night tales for a great folk mix👋
Wow! I remember tubthumper...this is way better!!! Had no idea that chumbawumba made real music( no offense to their fun drinking-pop!)
you should dive deeper into the band, they have a very wide range of great socially conscious music, anything from anarcho punk to synth pop to acoustic folk. I had a similar reaction than you when I first learned about them, but after digging deeper they've become one of my favourite bands and helped me appreciate all of the different musical directions they've taken over the years, including the Tubthumper album. They have a lot to explore in lyrical content and musical creativity
@@nim3277 my mind is so fried by this decade of my life that I likely won't have room in my head for it, but I don't doubt that they have some great music in their back catalog! My politics are in some ways a polar opposite of these guys, but I have learned to respect them just as human artists... the great thing about both dance music and folk music is that they cut beyond politics and ideas, and get directly to the human side of things
Chumbawamba aren't rebels tho
why did chumbawumba do this. its like dio from JoJo
Anarcho Commie punks made an album that celebrates rebels of days gone by? Not really hard math on the why. It's great though.
Both to pay tribute to those in the past fighting for freedom, and to work on their harmonies.
I think they've succeeded at both missions.
Because the history according to those who hold power is written in the history books while he true history of the people is written and passed on in folk music.
Jesus, Riker, quit describing things through your sad, pop-culture lens. Read a book. Read _many_ books.
