Watch Damien talks money, his channel is great for beginners and really helped me to understand it more, of course there's more research beyond that needed and there's alot of other channels that also touch on this.

you can buy some ETFs that benchmark the index. some are iShares core s & p 500 which tracks the 500 biggest company in US.. Vanguard also has one but it is a little on the pricier side. Not sure what you mean by equity but the management fee is really low and equity depends on how much you purchase and how the company you bought into distributes the fund into every company in the index.
