@@EmilyGloeggler7984 as an on-off gardener myself, I've just gotten back into it! I'm aware of the stresses, particularly pests (birds and rodents.. they eat my herbs!)... but I realise now that I was also making some very basic mistakes, putting plants in the wrong location in the garden with too much sun, soils that dried out in pots that drained too fast or heated up, overwatering with mains water that has too much chlorine which killed the soil bacteria. Not fertilising enough through repotting with organic compost. Don't struggle with half healthy plants! I now only accept excellent growth. Just like with my investments 😉

The way I get high quality food for low prices, is, I wait for it to all go on clearance, then I buy ALL of it. I clear shelves of high shelf-life items, often organic, high in protein, or if not organic, known to have really low pesticides.
So, I wind up with a surplus that buffers me out to about 1.5 months. I use that 1.5 months to acquire more things on clearance, so I always keep that buffer and am buying at the absolute lows. It's like 570ck5. Buy on the dips.
My general rule of thumb is: acquire meat at 6 dollars a lb. or less. Acquire everything else at around 2.70 or less per 900 calories (a heavy meal). Buy grains at under 15 cents an ounce, preferably 8 - 11 cents, since that's what I bulk-bought most of my organic grains at.
All perishables go in the freezer and I keep it always topped off. All grains wind up in airtight containers (6 month reserve) , vacuum-bagged and out of light (2 year reserve), or double vacuum-bagged, O2-packeted, out of light, and packed with foam and paper into boxes (25 year reserve).

Hi Graham! With Fruit and Veg, with you moving to Las Vegas soon, you'll have to double check what will grow there and adjust. You may have to continue to plant in containers rather than planting directly into the soil or make raised garden beds/green houses. Thankfully there are really cheap ways of doing this, some areas of the USA provide free compost to backyard growers, and a lot of people think about gardening and then go to throw out their green houses or garden sheds which you might be able to pick up on a dumpster dive and/or craigslist/ebay rather than paying full price. Potatoes, garlic, and ginger are three things that you can plant at home from what you already get from the grocery store. (Ginger needs to be inside at the start of its life, Garlic needs to be outside in late fall to benefit from a frozen/cold winter, and potato crops can yield decent returns if your soil is soft and right nutrition levels.)

I was stuck in the idea of being a minimalist in all aspects of life, as well as being very frugal. I found myself becoming very OCD and felt a wrench in my stomach every time I spent money.
If you enjoy getting haircuts, get haircuts. If you enjoy drinking Starbucks lattes, drink them. Just find a balance. Mine is to make sure I max my retirement accounts and then l will buy myself things I want and don’t need, because it is okay to enjoy luxuries.
Take care of yourselves, this way of thinking may seem logical and you want your money to “work” but life is uncertain and short.

    • @rubbers3
      @rubbers3 Před 3 lety +6

Exactly! Saving money on useless things is one thing, being frugal or a penny-pincher is another.
There's no point in saving money for the sole purpose of saving money if you don't enjoy it, life's worth living if you're actually living, and not just existing. There is value in getting a bit more cautious with your spending, when your goal is saving now to spend later (like a bigger purchase), but it's not worth to save money to not do anything with it your entire life.

Great Video Graham. Here's one more thing that I've been doing for a while with my clothes to ensure that each of my dress shirts gets worn the same amounts. Side Note: All my shirts are name brands such as Chaps, Izod, Croft and Barrow and were bought on clearance at the big name department stores for 80% to 90% off. I had most of them tailored to fit since I'm totally OCD about a bunched up tucked in shirt. I labeled all of my shirts from 1 to 27. Yes, I have 27 dress shirts! I also labled their respective hangars as well. I have a clip board with the list of my shirts. Every time I wear a shirt, it gets a tick mark. I make sure all the shirts have the same number of tick marks to ensure each shirt is getting worn. Every 3 times the shirt is worn, it gets washed, and I put a W on the clip board. This ensures a full useful life of my shirt inventory. And FYI, I work in an air conditioned office (prior to the virus) so I never sweat up my shirts. I know some people wash their shirts every time they are worn.

Graham, I'm feeling 35 and going on 65. There are many programs for the 55 and up crowd that reduce our property taxes, utility bills, and discounts on many other things (people can search on the net), I also found out that AAA car and home insurance don't pay to advertise like those other insurance companies like Progressive, Geico, for rate competition, etc and they are usually cheaper. I don't smoke, have a good driving record and, if I take a 3 hr online course for driving then my car insurance will go down $10.00+ a month.
Another BIG money savings for me: I have learned to fix and do many rehab projects around the house from a couple rehabs on my country house (damn renters!) and I learned a lot from YT. I recently learned how to put on roofing over my back decks, put in another couple circuit breakers and wire electricity from my house to my shed, put in switches and outlets; I insulated under my home and in my attic (Yuk) but it saved me at least $3,000; sealed my duct work under the house to stop cold air from seeping in, replaced boards on my decks (ok, that is easy). reframed a large glass 8 paned wall on my outside deck, and when I get my rear in gear I will be buying a part online and put an actuator in my van side door so it will automatically open and shut again. The newer cars are harder to work on so I usually have my mobile mechanic do the heavy under the hood/chassis stuff - but I did most all the putting in parts, timed and gapped plugs, including wiring my '67 Chevy Impala when the wires caught fire! I was 17 then.
Learning how to do all these things gives you confidence and a feeling of independence. Although I'm not the greatest cook, I always seem to find the boyfriend who is good at it and I'll do the dishes! A win-win! I just discovered you and your cohorts today and been binge watching you all. I'm learning so much from all of you, subscribed, and of course hit the Like Button! I want to start a YT channel and have the same anxiety as you all had in the beginning. Yet, I have no idea what to do but I'm writing ideas down. I've been a Mental Health Therapist, Hypnotist & NeuroLinguistic Programmer and Consultant, student of Quantum Mechanics and LOA, Flight Attendant and a few other side careers tucked in here and there. I've got skills and I'm ready for something new but I don't want to start a YT channel until the desire and passion of an idea hits me.
I didn't expect this would be so lengthy but I want people to think about what it is they can learn to do on their own and it starts with baby steps - first in your MIND: make a Choice to take a Chance or your life will never Change! Hope you'll see me on a YT channel one day! : ) Tia

Do you really have a community u trade with ? Like do you have a coach or a mentor as the case maybe ? The last time i checked, trading is more profitable when you sort the services of a mentor

@@jakethompson8737 I work with AGATHA CHRISTINE ROBINSON. A l broker and a financial consultant. I have made a lot of dividends owing to her mentorship. She plays her advisory role very professionally. You can easily look her up on the internet by searching her name on Google. All her needed information are there for you. Good luck.

I would love to see Dave Ramsey do a reaction video to Graham naming a cat after him.

If you're going to cook all your meals, get an instant pot and a food processor, or anything that's better, batch cook all the meals during the weekends, because it's very hard to cook for 5-6 people daily.

Throw some seed potatoes into whatever garden space you have. They grow like weeds and are a really versatile food source.

Great video! I agree with everything. Unless I have a car. I use a taxi. I take a taxi to buy groceries. The place where I live is easy to use and costs about $ 2. Also I don't have Rental Properties. I would also recommend choosing low-cost places to stay to save money. I started thinking about finances and investments, and then your video with Marina appeared on CZcams. I love minimalism. A couple of days ago I was thinking about how I can grow herbs at home. I also agree about clothes. I have two pants. As soon as they wear out holes, I will buy myself new ones.
