  • Over the last two decades, wineries in Bali have moved from importing grapes from Australia to using local grapes. The wines produced are thus unique -- the only fine wine producing region I know of that is solidly in the tropics, something I would never have thought possible.
I have selected four wines for tasting today: three from Sababay Winery and one from Hatten. These are all world class red wines and cover the entire range from dry to sweet. Each of these wines is a blend of different grapes.
    Black Velvet by Sababay
Dark red-purple in color with a pleasant nose. Notes of cherries and blueberries. Nice body, smooth and mellow. Very fruity. Reminds me of nicer Spattburgunder wines from Germany.
    Reserve Red by Sababay
Rich red-purple color with more intense nose. Bold silky flavor with a nice bite of acidity. Flavor has notes of cranberries, raspberries, and currants. Toasted oak on the finish. Very nice wine.
    Aga Red by Hatten
Light red color with a very fruity nose. Notes of roses, hibiscus and currants. Very fruity. Very unique and classy.
    Ludisia by Sababay
Dark purple/red color with nose of caramel, chocolate and red berries Nice smooth and mellow wine wine with strong cherry notes. Hint of bittersweetness in the finish.
