A cool detail I love was the way that Beth killed the final monster was in reference to one of the first evil dead posters with Beth holding the chain saw above her head, just like how Bruce Campbell did in the poster before plunging it into the monster. This movie was a such a love letter to the fans, I loved it
Compared to every other horror franchise, the Evil Dead franchise has never missed a beat and always delivered masterpiece after masterpiece. I'm truly thankful for everything this franchise, and I hope it continues to prosper for years to come.
I'm not sure I agree. The first 3 movies were pure comedy gold imo. The first movie might as well have not happened. Because Ash takes his girlfriend back there! So basically Evil Dead didn't work. It doesn't exist basically. Not in the franchise. So when they're talking about bringing Ash into the franchise... how??? It's like the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot where Freddy was some super serious, and weird looking dude! I don't even count it in my top Freddy movies. So they've gone in this direction. Fair enough. But they've basically reboot the original in the last one. They've removed all comedy from it. There's no room for Ash. 🤷🏻♂️

Yeah, I didn't know what to expect as I had no idea there was a franchise of these movies, and was kinda "hoping" for something or someone to save them last minute, but at the end it's like no one's safe anymore.
I know, it was actually amazing and a perfect continuation for the series. I think Beth was an amazing lead character and I hope we get to see more of her in the future, perfect replacement for ash. And I think that's why some people hate it, because ash isn't in here and a lot of people can't get past nostalgia
Evil Dead and Bruce Campbell were a huge part of my early life. It's wild thinking that these films and characters have been a part of my life for 40 years. The TV series was a hoot, loved seeing Bruce back in action again, and I'd hoped this newest installment was worth something. Very few movies have stuck with me as much as these, the combination of "gross out" horror, comedy and lines that I still can recite to this day are in a league of their own.
This film hit all the beats to the original Evil Dead and what made this such a fun horror flick with over-the-top practical effects is Alyssa's character that is so mesmerizing and unsettling that I never really wanted to take my eyes off of the screen. Every scene is just so damn gnarly and the opening sequence is perhaps one of my favorite.
I saw it at the theater twice and purchased it on digital yesterday, if you’re on the fence about seeing it I HIGHLY suggest the theater! The booming score and cinematography needs to be experienced on the big screen!
2:14. The house in the shape of a triangle has a significance. It has three connected triangles. In Norse mythology the three triangles reflect the connection between earth, Heaven and Hell. In the finale of the film, three family members lives were taken. That’s what I thought
I thought this was going to be a play it safe movie where the mom gets possessed, nothing bad happens to the kids and mom is restored to her former self at the end for a sappy ending. I'm glad that I was wrong. I can't help but wonder why wouldn't they just put a Delta 88 somewhere in the parking lot of the building at the end of the movie?
Always enjoy your videos Paul! I saw the new Evil Dead opening night with my best friend and a full theatre, it was a blast! I love that the new movies do a bit of psychology on family ties; Mia & David in the 2013 film and now Beth, Ellie and her kids in this one.
I just watched this last night and really enjoyed it. The opening title card was pretty cool with the reflection in the lake. I also wonder if the wood chipper could be a little nod to Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil as well with it being a cabin in the woods horror comedy. I think a breakdown of that movie would be fun too.
The nursery rhyme Ellie sings also reminded me of the "Baby, Little Baby" lullaby from Evil Dead 2013. Mia as a deadite sang it to try and play at her brother's emotions and convince him to release her.

There were a couple of other Shining references including the shot of Beth from below. Also I believe the shot of Ellie's hands when she first reaches from the tub is a reference to Alien when we see Ripleys hands close up.

Also, the Three Stooges not only influenced scenes in Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness, but the term "fake Shemp" was coined by Raimi to describe another actor replacing an actor who had left the production. As far as horror franchises go, there's not been a bad one in the bunch, including the wild Ash VS Evil Dead series.

honestly ive only watched the first movie and the one that came out in 2013, and let me just say… evil dead rise probably is one of the better movies in this franchise. Evil dead rise unlike the other movies that ive watched, actually had me hope the characters dont die. I felt connected with the family, their dynamics and everything were so cute. So when they died i genuinely felt so sad and cried 😭 They were kids 😭 And i love that they kept the campy gore and effects in this movie. I loved that after EVERY single scene where someone got hurt, there would be a dramatic ass pause,😭😭 it was chaotic, bloody, funny, and actually scary?? I felt genuine horror. I loved the references throughout the movie too. Idk i loved everything abt this movie. Loved that they didnt shy away from killing off the family in the worst possible way, rlly had me understand how scary that demon is.
Another tricky easter egg: Mr Fonda has a deer head tattoo on his forearm reminiscent of the deer head hanging on the wall of the cabin in Evil Dead II. Long shot... 😉
I hope bruce got nostalgia from watching the end product and decides to reprise ash once more . I can see a sequel, and a cameo more than a line would be awesome
Danny's Three Stooges poster also have a "hear no evil, speak no evil" thing going on, which, coincidently, is exactly how the demon is summoned; through Danny's speakers when the priest reads the incantation out loud
My only complaint of this movie was how did the girl at the end not hear the screaming, shotgun blasts, elevator (in bits and covered in blood) and then comes down to the basement (after the stairs were gone) and is oblivious. That just didn't fit for me, seemed unlikely.

I know its probably asking a bit much of bruce Campbell now as he did say he retired the ash character and he's not getting any younger but I'd love to see one more movie or even an ash vs evil dead season 4 just to wrap up ash's story . Although I really did enjoy Evil dead rise as a long time fan of the franchise I just have a bit hard time watching anything evil dead related without the great man himself..
All the characters in the movie get scared which is a nice little hint the the characters in the rest of the franchise who also got scared. Very good attention to detail on the directors part.
There were a few call outs to other horror films the Shining not just the blood in the elevator but the looking down to the camera. The A frame cabin has been used now in a few recent movies.
Film kicks off after 30-35 minutes, my skin was crawling when the demons were summoned, it's brutal, sick, relentless, ruthless, unforgiving, i enjoyed the film 8 out of 10 😊
I love the fact that they used so much common sense in producing amazing effects in the original - I mean the demon shooting through the woods shots were done on a wheelbarrow with a flat piece of wood with the camera on top. Just innovative camera photography. Simple and brilliant.
Just a quick bit about the supposed "Friday the 13th" nod- a director for one of the Friday's mentions how HE thought Jason was brought back to be the Necronomicon, even had the book appear in the movie.
SPOILERS: Just the fact that they brought kids into it and actually killed some of them off was insane! 😱 That doesn't happen often, as it's one of the few taboos in horror and definitely raised the stakes which elevated this film!

Just a little bit of differentiation - If Jesus is on the cross, it's a crucifix. If there is no Jesus it is just a cross. There is a rather large difference, just as you mentioned it looking like a crucifix, when in fact it was just a cross. You mentioned this at the sort of 4 minute mark. Just wanted to let you know the difference :)
The wuthering heights quite is from the third chapter of that book. And this movie is the third book in this series The doors of the elevator are also destroyed in a way that makes it look like a vagina when the blood erupts from it.

Haven't seen it, doubt I will after the Alvarez remake... that one was a bit unpleasant, personally. Evil Dead was always campy and schlocky, but they have stepped over an imaginary line in my mind and I doubt I'll go back to these new ones anytime soon. But thanks for breaking it down, Paul my guy!

The Hatchet movies were all good less popular but should definitely get more recognized and love, they were all way more brutal, fun and funny.

The lamppost shot really felt like a callback to The Exorcist.
The sound was the best thing about this movie. From beginning to end it was consistently 10/10

I know its probably asking a bit much of bruce Campbell now as he did say he retired the ash character and he's not getting any younger but I'd love to see one more movie or even an ash vs evil dead season 4 just to wrap up ash's story . Although I really did enjoy Evil dead rise as a long time fan of the franchise I just have a bit hard time watching anything evil dead related without the great man himself..
The pattern on the apartment door reminded me of the carpet from The Shining
All the characters in the movie get scared which is a nice little hint the the characters in the rest of the franchise who also got scared. Very good attention to detail on the directors part.
This movie making me cursing in the theatre a lot. But Not Gonna lie, The Intro when the tittle comes up is LIT 🔥
There were a few call outs to other horror films the Shining not just the blood in the elevator but the looking down to the camera. The A frame cabin has been used now in a few recent movies.
The ending with the sponge bob clip was perfect 😂
I found being trapped in the apartment the entire time was definitely disturbing, but I was disappointed we didn't get back out to the lake at all.

Film kicks off after 30-35 minutes, my skin was crawling when the demons were summoned, it's brutal, sick, relentless, ruthless, unforgiving, i enjoyed the film 8 out of 10 😊

I love the fact that they used so much common sense in producing amazing effects in the original - I mean the demon shooting through the woods shots were done on a wheelbarrow with a flat piece of wood with the camera on top. Just innovative camera photography. Simple and brilliant.
I love these horror breakdowns. The conjuring sinister any of the nightmare on elm street or Friday the 13th movies would be AWESOME!!!!
Just a quick bit about the supposed "Friday the 13th" nod- a director for one of the Friday's mentions how HE thought Jason was brought back to be the Necronomicon, even had the book appear in the movie.

Just the fact that they brought kids into it and actually killed some of them off was insane! 😱 That doesn't happen often, as it's one of the few taboos in horror and definitely raised the stakes which elevated this film!

Just a little bit of differentiation - If Jesus is on the cross, it's a crucifix. If there is no Jesus it is just a cross. There is a rather large difference, just as you mentioned it looking like a crucifix, when in fact it was just a cross. You mentioned this at the sort of 4 minute mark. Just wanted to let you know the difference :)
This was surprisingly good! Surprisingly because most remakes and revivals are horrible these days lol.
The wuthering heights quite is from the third chapter of that book. And this movie is the third book in this series
The doors of the elevator are also destroyed in a way that makes it look like a vagina when the blood erupts from it.

I noticed the emphasized lines in the "Wuthering Heights" book matches how the mother is possessed in the elevator.

Haven't seen it, doubt I will after the Alvarez remake... that one was a bit unpleasant, personally. Evil Dead was always campy and schlocky, but they have stepped over an imaginary line in my mind and I doubt I'll go back to these new ones anytime soon. But thanks for breaking it down, Paul my guy!

love the heavy spoilers show but LOL I couldn't stop laughing when you said they used chains in the first movie so that's a reference when they used chains in the new one
