How to work in K-pop industry as a foreigner: Ex-HYBE hiring manager

  • K-pop is not all about singers ― there are countless unsung heroes working behind the scenes to produce and promote albums who dedicate their sweat and tears. And with K-pop sweeping the world off its feet, more people are craving to carry out such a mission at K-pop record labels that incubate and manage stars.
There is good news for them: music powerhouses here have ramped up hiring as they balloon in size. In the case of HYBE, home to phenomenal boy group BTS, the company currently has more than 60 job openings. In fact, the total number of its employees is 456 this year ― a leap from 73 in 2017.
With many companies expanding their businesses overseas, an increasing number of opportunities are now open to foreigners, says Lee Sang-hwan, co-founder and CEO of Conexus Lab, which was founded in 2019 to provide educational resources for those seeking jobs in the lucrative K-pop industry. Prior to establishing Conexus Lab with his partner Kim Sung-kuk, Lee worked in human resources in many companies ― including HYBE, CJ ENM and JTBC ― for more than a decade.

I think the power these companies have over you once you sign the contract is underestimated. With working with the most famous groups, it would seem like a very fun job but why would be so many people complaining about it? A big portion of this video is him addressing those complaints. Never mind him saying that the job is like normal production, the real thing here is that work its not 9-5 it’s basically 24/7 and the salary is low. Plus this is Korea, labor laws are different. All in all, it sounds like a pretty bad deal.

Funny how he talks about salaries in the industry being low, and “if you wait a few years, you’ll get a raise.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ The problem is still there: companies should appreciate their new hires and young talents more. Instead, they’re asking for patience and loyalty. 🙄 Come on, if these young professionals cannot have a decent wage now that the industry is booming, and the top executives are getting rich, when will they? Ridiculous!

They prefer people who are Korean over others, that's true but it's not like they don't hire other foreigners but even so the scope of jobs are very limited for foreign applicants. Even the foreigners who are hired are chosen after rigourous process and after all that hardwork you'll realise you're paid less than the average salary other people get in Korea (this is not because you're a foreigner but most employees working in entertainment labels are paid less compared to other industries)

@@asmiivarshney3380 In S Korea, most jobs don't pay well, the work life balance is all over the place, you're owned by the company and at their mercy, you're also supposed to please your superiors because of the hierarchy. Women also get treated differently as they're often considered as liability as pregnancies and so. Workplace harassment is a thing but many people don't get to complain because that'll affect their work life. We being a foreigner also causes issues as they think we don't understand the culture and as most men in Korea has been through military the ones who have done their services definitely get along more, you being from the same university or school as your colleagues or higher ups definitely help and yes you should be good looking as well
