Edge Motors 1.8T VW and Audi oil sludge removal and camshaft adjuster replacement

  • common problem in vw and audi 1.8t motors, oil sludge caused by poor maintenance or poor quality oil used.
    PLEASE "LIKE" THIS VIDEO!!!
    NOTE: the fitting size at the oil filter mounting bolt is 8AN
    in this video we show you how to remove an engine oil sludge out of 1.8t engine and how to replace the camshaft adjuster
    oil sludge is very common on 1.8t motors VW and Audi, the oil pressure switch is designed to activate the low oil pressure warning at around 7psi of pressure, and it is only active at 2000rpms(at 2000 rpms the normal oil pressure for 1.8t is around 45psi or the lowest is 35psi) so if you see the oil pressure light on your cluster at around 2000 rpm your oil pressure is WAY too low. you should stop immediately !!! you might not make it to that exit that's 500feet away...
    If you take your car to the dealership, they most likely will replace the oil pick up tube and nothing else, but that will only solve the problem for some time, and not fix it.
    (IF YOU HAD A DEALER REPAIR OIL SLUDGE PROBLEM FOR YOU AND THE PROBLEM CAME BACK AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTH PLEASE POST WHAT HAPPENED)

    Finally someone with actual and factual knowledge that uploaded a how to video. This was so well done. These guys right here all the type of guys that I would want to have working for me if I owned a shop or the guys I would want to be fixing my car if I wasn't a tech....
    My 2001 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8t w/5Spd trans is @ 254kmiles and still pulling strong. Just finished up my fourth timing belt and water pump and second cam chain tensioner replacement. Replaced the original clutch at 185k miles.....
    Audi/Volkswagen really are great automobiles as long as you listen to the vehicle. if there is any type of issue, you got to be on top of it right away! I understand not everybody is financially able to do all the scheduled maintenance type work and when stuff starts to wear down and begin failing they can't replace / repair immediately. If you are one of these types, a Volkswagen / Audi is not for you. Go buy a Toyota.....
    I can guarantee you though that the driving experience and satisfaction / joy that you get from a Toyota is nowhere near a well maintained Audi/VW......
    Unless we talkin about the 3rdGen Supra/ 2ndGen MR2 😊

      Unfortunately, hardly anyone makes an aftermarket oil pan gasket for this model. I checked OEM Volkswagen, aftermarket at Deutsche Auto Parts, ECS auto parts, and German Auto Parts. None of them had a listing for an oil pan gasket. All indicated that a tube of silicone gasket maker should be used. However, there was a listing for the gasket on Rock Auto

    • @EDGEMOTORS
      @EDGEMOTORS  Před 6 lety +5

      You put in wrong year, try to put in 97 or 98... the only years that had oil pan gasket are the earliest 1.8t the rest dind have it from he factory, that’s why they sell silicone for that.
      The old gasket won’t fit newer engines, but if you try to put the old pan on with silicone, you will crack the pan...

    I'm so glad I saw this video. I was going to have a machine engine oil sludge flush done. I know that the shop was not going to put this much time and energy in my car. I would have been sent off with an oil pan full of gunk and something would have clogged then I would be in the same place this car is in. I have a 2002 Saturn Vue that seems to burn oil. You guys did a great job.

    • @EDGEMOTORS
      @EDGEMOTORS  Před 10 lety

      the regula oil flushes never work, they make things worst... even though they do desolve and breake off oil sludge, the debrie still end up in the oil pan, and then clog up the rest of the oil system...

    • @EDGEMOTORS
      @EDGEMOTORS  Před 10 lety

      no! def not. putting chemicals that disolve oil into oil system for a long time is not a good idea... and if you already have a problem with sludge, the oil flush will not disolve all of the sludge, but will loosen it... and then it will fall down into the oil pan gradually clogging the oil screen.

I would love to use this technique to clean the engine.Can I use any fuel pump from a junkyard that was the type that sits in the gas tank?I know you take suction of the solvent mix from the spot that the oil filter would normally screw onto. Great process on getting the sludge out. Another route for those not comfortable with the gas method is to drain 1qt of oil out of the pan and add a quart of transmission fluid to the oil and drive it for about 100 miles, no more than 300 as the trans fluid is full of detergent and should not be left in the engine for too long as old seals will develop leaks.

    • @EDGEMOTORS
      @EDGEMOTORS  Před 10 lety

      see, the problem with this method is that, the atf will clean for sure, but might cause damage to moving parts, and seals. and after its done its job all the debree will be sent down to the oil pan where it will clogg the oil pick up screen.. and you still going to have to remove the pan to clean it. also it may not remove all the deposits from the block and head walls and could loosen it, then even if you open oil pan and change the screen later those deposits could fall off and still go to the screen.
      so the best way to make sure that the sdludge is fixed for good is to remove the pan and valve cover and clean it out manually.
      but on the other hand it wouldt be a bad idea to run atf right before manual clean up.

    I managed to clean the oil pan out with gasoline , Scraped the pick up screen with a custom bent piece of very heavy guage stereo wire , then did an engine flush just by running the car. Lots of crap came out , and car was good for a few months but then the problem came back. Took the plunge last weekend cleaned the top end up and replaced the tensioner with a spare I had , droped the subframe and pulled the oil pan. The walls were covered in burnt on oil that was flaking off and droping into the pan , just cloging everything up again. Puting it back together tommorow and crossing fingers. I have wrenched on lots of cars over the years , but watching this great video as I did the job made things go much easier. Have found many other video's and forums that address this problem , most of them are way out to lunch. Edge Motors has posted a very concise way to fix the problem , and in my opinion the only proper procedure. Thanks guys.

      Cams , caps , and crank looked in suprisingly good condition. Car has almost 300,000 Kms on it. Pieces of tensioner pads in the pan , but pads were good , which tells me that a previous owner had allready replaced the cam chain tensioner , or perhaps the whole head.

      do not clean the screen. REPLACE IT!!! if you clean the screen and then cut the funnel off you will see that the only spot thats clean is in the center where you can see it, and the area around it is still clogged. the screen is only 35+- $ so its not worth taking a chance on that.

    the trans fluid we used about 1qt and the rest is engine oil. and after purple power we used water to clean it out, be very careful with purple power it eats aluminum parts if you leave it there for too long.but all that might not be necessary if you do not have sludge in oil channels.the car in the video was very sludged up. if your sludge is not that bad than you could get away with just purple power the motor and changing the oil pick up. make sure you clean the oil supply line for the turbo

    Hi what an awesome video you have made. Quality of work is 2nd to none, you inspire me to be as good as you once im a fully qualified technician. Hoping you could help with a problem i have on my 2002 a3 1.8t quattro, it has covered 130,000 miles. I bought this car with a knackered turbo (turbine shaft was in 3pieces, owner had overfilled the engine oil, not sure if that caused the turbo to go) When running on idle it is blowing oil smoke from the exhaust (has a blue haze and has that unmistakeable smell) seems to be none whatsoever underload on/off bost. A dry compression test is giving me 9bar on all 4 cylinders, not ideal but within spec, not done a wet test yet. Oil pressure is spot on. I have replaced the valve stem seals as a couple had came off the valve guides ( with the head in situ, what a job that was ! ) I have also fitted a brand new turbo to it. I have removed the original pcv system due to it being a maze of burst hoses etc and made my own (just a simple t-piece connecting the block breather to the cam cover breather then to the turbo inlet pipe). Hose and t-piece have an ID of 19mm so no flow problems there. Im running it on Mobil 5w-40 fully synthetic. Im thinking the oil control rings may be gummed up, or possibly the rings altogether are needing replaced due to the lowish compression. Any help and/or suggestions with this would be great, thanks in advance. I wish you the best for 2015, keep them great videos coming also.

      Michael Yeo so,let me get it straight... you only see smoke under load, not on idle or light load... does it smoke under load for couple of seconds right after deceleration ???

      No it only smokes on idle. I cant see any smoke on any other operating conditions. Im thinking the rings are gone since the compression is pretty low, as oil getting by the oil control rings would help the compression rings do their job, right ? I done a wet compression test and theres no change in compression from the dry test. All 4 piston crowns were damp on removal of the spark plugs so oil is definately getting in their somehow.

    Thanks for the informative video. There is an oil pan gasket which needs no additional silicon sealing, So no silicone would get lost in the the engine : P/N = ELRING 163.520

      Oil pan gasket only came on early 1.8t, the part number you provided is from those engines. Anything after 2001, the block is different shape and this gasket will not work...

      Ps if you don’t put the gasket in on the early 1.8t you most likely crack the oil pan...

    Nice job guy's I too hate when when they put that red or blue silicone and a lot of it too I seen it done at a vw dealer on a BEW engine I was able to replace the main and connecting rods with out removing the crank the crank was ok but some of them were not that good the car still runs today and like 2 years ago I never seen that technique before cleaning with a electric pump and diesel fuel etc I know that the vw and audi dealer has a kit for that but I think the car is running during that cleaning procedure.

      Chance Gonzalez I owned a Murano once... you need a new transmission. CVT transaxles are non-serviceable by anyone but a specialized shop.

    Fantastic well done video! Helped me a LOT ! I have the head off for valve damage, (broken timing belt) My question is: Would you put the head back on BEFORE you put the cams in just to make sure the new valves dont get bent or do you go ahead and put the cams in and be extra careful when installing the head?

    Sorry I forgot to say you I'm from Mexico. I can not take my car up there. Also I like the mechanics of these cars. :) I hope that you could help me about my problem.

    Oh and by the way , I owned a turbo charged Renault for many years. The mechanics at a local turbocharger and Diesel shop told me 30 years ago to add 1 quart of ATF with every oil change to fight sludge and keep the Oil ports and bearings in the turbo clean. When my engine finally died from an unrelated problem , at 350,000 Km , I took it apart and was amazed at how clean everything was. I use 1 Quart / Liter of ATF with every oil change , on every vehicle I drive.
