Great video and commentary. As a kick the bucket list item, my wife and I (at age 50) have started our DJ business. Like you, lugging that heavy equipment takes a serious tool on your body and equipment selection is very important. We are still learning the ins and outs of the DJ community, finding our space as older music enthusiasts, and have fun on this journey! 😂 Keep up the awesome videos and thank you for your wisdom in this DJ business!

Hey Brian - I too, have kind of made that comment to Rachel. She feels she is bringing what she needs to give her clients excellent service. It all works for her. I have been following your CZcams videos for quite some time. YOU inspired me to really take a look at the equipment I was using and the type of events I am providing services for. My system is now MUCH lighter and easier to set up. THANK YOU! I appreciate you.

Good suggestions. One additional thing to consider is how many trips to load in. Especially if the room you are playing in is far away. ( Roof top bar for example ). Even if it’s close by, I have developed, for my smaller system, a 1 Trip load in. All of my stuff fits safely on my DJ cart and I even store my cart and bags under my booth while Djaying. I literally practiced my loading until I made it fast, safe and secure.
Talk about saving time and energy.

The critical question of "what do you need" really is an important one. I've recently had to up-size my vehicle as I'm doing bigger events. Even though I can fit all of my gear in the van and with room to spare, I don't carry everything to every event. I take only what I need and leave it at that. Amp racks are an interesting aside; I'm a passive speakers guy and have an amp rack... But I have more amps than I need; so if one does wet the bed on a gig, I can jump to another. Big advantage of class D amplifiers is I'm not adding another 50lbs of weight by doing it.

One thing about all the lighting, sometimes that can be a health hazard waiting to happen. I always discuss with my clients about Flashing, Strobe Lights, and they oh we have a guest, family members that it would effect them or they may have a medical condition that it will definitely effect them.
People won’t remember the DJ’s lights or food at the venue but what sticks to them like glue is the Music and sound quality.

Your old mate from NJ says one piece of equipment one cannot do without is an offsider, someone to help set up and pull down, someone to play a tune while you go to the toilet or sneak a smoke, sage advice if you can believe it. I have taken an offsider to nearly every gig, worth every cent. I watched Rachel's giglog and thought - holy crap that's a lot of kit for one person. She really needs help.

Logistics and speed of setup/pack down is why I’m moving to a self-contained system in a rack. On top there will be a shelf to rest a laptop, wireless mic transmitter and a Denon Prime Go while my Behringer XR-12 will be mounted at the front.

Hi Brian, the points you have brought forward are important. I have large setup, with double redundancy in equipment. My biggest concern is equipment failures. I was an electronics engineer and seen my share of equipment brought in. I believe equipment is built better and cheaper today as in yesteryears. Lighting is quite inexpensive and affordable for many djs today, therefore many need to showcase their design and equipment. I always think of setups for the future might become even more easier to setup than today. Thank you for your thoughts.

I'll be 49 in May and I've gigged as a musician since I was 15 and as a DJ since 2008. Right now, lighting setup takes the longest for me and I'm in the process of updating that very soon by using Chauvet D-FI on some of fixtures and a six pack of Ape Maxis 2.0, which are hopefully on the way. I'm so excited for this. Super smart for reflecting lighting from appropriate services. Aha! The cable bag...I've recently put all the cables I actually use in a small bag and the big spares bag stays in the vehicle unless I need it. I just removed two lighting stands and a six foot table too. Replaced that with a 4X2 booth...so much better than bending over the table...I'd done that for years and finally fixed it. I just got Macbook Air M1 last week and iPad is my backup if needed, and I carry two mixers too. My ceremony rig is a single Bose S1 Pro with a mixer. Work smart! Great video!

good point Brian!.. I'm 56 in 2 months and me too, so many times, I asking myself how to 'smartize' my 'DJ party stuff'..
1st: I've sold my 2 Cameo light bars + tripods: too much fatigue, too much time to set them..I'm thinking to 4 Stairville flood floor lights pointing to walls than to create same effect as your Ape Labs, maybe I could go (me too) buying Ape Labs stuff..
2nd: I'm a vinyl addicted and I love play on turntables, so I ever think to play with them on DVS setting + S11 mixer.. but most part of times nobody care about turntables or not, so I play on CDJ3000s + S11 set.. easier, lighter and easy able to play requests on TIDAL (as DVS)
3rd: me too I have your Pro Event table, but I'm thinkin' to get something lighter to cover with a black cloth
4th: PA.. the real big point! I've FBT CS1000 and they sound superior to every other set (of that size) I listened to, but they are weighty.. I'm thinkin' to Lucas Nano 602 Stereo set..

When I first started doing weddings at the beginning of Covid I used to take almost everything I owned, I traveled with as much stuff as Rachel had there for doing small 50 person weddings. Just packing the truck full and occasionally even having to take 2 trucks. Totems, moving heads, facades, Wash FX Hex's on gravity stands, dance floor lighting, speaker tripods with 15" top cabs, a dmx controller, wireless dongles, dbx driverack, 2 18" EKX's, hazers, hundreds of feet of extension cords, all sorts of power strips and 3 ways, and for some reason enough xlr cable and dmx cables to span a football field (why I every thought I'd need multiple 50' xlr cables is beyond me) and lots of other unnecessary stuff that just made setup and teardown long and miserable.
And why? The clients weren't paying for all that stuff because I wasn't charging anything for it above my normal rate, it was mostly for my own amusement.
Fast forward 2 years and now most of that stuff is just collecting dust in a storage unit and I regret wasting money on half of it, 90% of my events now I can fit everything in a Jeep Cherokee. I have my folding table and a façade, controller case, column arrays, battery powered wireless dmx uplighting that go into music mode for dancing and my laptop bag with a laptop and a tablet for backup.
I just actually ordered stuff a few days ago to build out my flight case and have it prewired to save even more time on setup and teardown. Instead of arriving 3 hours early I can do an hour and have time to relax before the event even starts. I bought a Nuetrix powercon connector to install in the case and a 10' and 25' powercon extension cord to power the case. Inside the case will be an ADJ powerbar powering laptop, wireless mics, dbx go rack and my speakers. I will only have to run one power cable and I ordered 15' cables that are both IEC and XLR that will plug right into the back of my case and go to the speakers.
And I like that spare charger idea.
As always thanks for the video, the tips are appreciated and I've adopted several of them from you.

I started off with too much equipment, too many lights and effects etc where it took me an hour to setup/set down.. now I've downsized to what would be required for the specific gig/venue.. Before the Venue managers would be moaning they were having to wait for me.. "I'm sorry I wish I had a Pop DJ Rig" ;D
I Prefer bouncing Wash Lighting off the Ceilings and walls which reflect and light up the room with mixed wash colours,, like you say rather than lights flashing about in their faces :)

My main goal has been about building a smaller better system. I just got 2 of the jbl eon one mk2 and a denon prime go. I started with one and realized quickly that the jbl was just a little quieter than the evolve 30s so I added another one and I have a nice battery powered mini rig. I could comfortably do a sub 60 Mayne 80 person event with it.

      Larry,
I was so excited to read your comment because you are a 70-year-old DJ. I just turned 60, been DJing and involved in this or live music my entire life. I was wrestling with the fact that I hit 60 thinking I’m too old to do this anymore, so when I saw you comment about the system you just retired in favour of the smaller one, it made my day. I have spent the last three or four years downgrading the size of my equipment while maintaining the quality. I use the amazing compact electro-voice column array speakers, and just recently purchased the prime go and prime 4 units to shed the laptop. Also use the Bose S1 battery powered unit for ceremony with wireless by Sennheiser to eliminate cables. Also used to carry tons of lighting, now just use the all-in-one bar on a stand kits. I even custom built a rolling console with everything pre-loaded that I roll off my trailer straight in if venue permits it, I just roll it in with everything on shelves underneath and my set up is about five minutes. Spent all this time and money downsizing then hit 60 and thought The gear is no longer my issue, it’s going to be my age. Didn’t know anybody my age or older was still doing this. Just wanted to get on here and say that you gave me inspiration to continue.

Ditch the laptop, which to me is a giant albatross and start using USB thumb drives with either the Pioneer XDJ or Denon Prime series. I did a wedding last Saturday and used 3 USB sticks. One had the Mobile Beat 200 (yes the tired out overplayed songs 99% of djs play at ALL weddings) The other two had cocktail music/1980s and one had Latin songs. I loved it. No laptop to set up, plus I already knew what songs to play, its not like doing a weird wedding--- it will be no different from another unless its race specific which I would bow out because I only speak English better than any language. Peace! Remember the laptop is on its way out like Blockbuster was.

Would colume arrays like evolve 50 work for outdoor events like on athletic fields. I’m sure the answer is No but since my one Rcf 12 inch is always clipping and not from me over driving the signal I think there’s something wrong with it. So I’m looking into new speakers or sound system that’s compact and less is more

    • @briansredd
      @briansredd  Před 2 lety

When you say "Clipping", are you saying the light flashes? Or, is the light steady on? Flashing is normal & just fine. Steady on is a problem. Remember, sending a 0db signal to your speakers is key. Anything more than that will effect sound quality. As far as speakers go for you, I'm sure there is a column array that would work for you, BUT it might not be "compact" to get the coverage you want / need. It kind of depends on your sound objectives & sometimes, figuring that out is trial & error. Compact arrays work great outdoors at listening levels. I will say that a traditional 2 way horn driven top cabinet tends to "Throw" further. Maybe a more powerful version of what you have would be the way to go. EV's EKX come to mind & would cost less than anything Evolve per side. They'll give you 132 db & that's quite a bit. Even a 12" EKX should work just fine.
