  • Accra: Traditional naming ceremony performed in Ghana for African-Americans

    Ghanaian traditional naming ceremony has been performed in Accra, to grant Ashanti tribal names to sixteen African-Americans from Newark City in the United States of America (USA) to reintegrate them into their ancestoral home.
    The diasporans were led by the mayor of Newark City, Ras Baraka who is now married to the daughter of the C.EO of GIHOC, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah. Their return to Ghana is to trace their ancestral roots. It is also to establish trade relations with Ghana. Already, they have established sister city relations with Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.
    The mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka was given royal name Kwaku Danso. The others are; Pablo Rodriguez-Kwame Osei, Andre Hollis-Yaw Agyeman, Jackie Hollis--Akosua Agyeman, Jhanae Wingfield- Afua Ataa Panyin, Lavar Young (Kwadwo Ansah) Kyana Woolridge (Abena Serwaa Bonsu), Modia Butler-Akwasi Frimpong, Kiburi Tucker-Kwabena Bediako, and among others
    Each of them sipped schnapps, and water whiles the name mentioned three times to each person as part of the rites. Sipping of the drink and water signifies an important ritual which enjoins the bearers of the names to be truthful at all times, and must be able to differentiate between good and evil and do right thing at all times. They were also handed traditional birth certificates.
    Deputy Chief Executive of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Benjamin Anane Nsiah welcomed them and urged them to leverage their expertise to develop various local potentials and opportunities for development.

    Chief Executive officer of the GIHOC distilleries, Hon. Maxwell Kofi Jumah said Africa needs strategic partnership to develop the abundant natural and human resources which they are committed to.

    The Mayor or Newark, Ras Baraka Kwaku Dabso and Jackie Hollis expressed gratitude to the chiefs and people of Ghana for the memorable reception. He told the media later in an interview that ” I bring with me all my ancestors who wished they can make the journey back.
    He assured support for the country and Kumasi in particular where they have established sister city relations and to reunite with brothers and sisters here on the continent
