On the one hand, Zola Blood are immensely talented and more than worthy of fame and fortune and zillions of views and all the “influence” and filthy lucre that widespread recognition and acclaim bring. On the other hand, I cannot think of a more horrid fate, a curse more dastardly, a destiny more grim and lonely, than fame. Have a listen to Billie Eilish’s “Everything I Wanted” if you think fame makes people happy: …It feels like yesterday was a year ago But I don’t want to let anybody know cause everybody wants something from me now And I don’t want to let em down… …If I knew it all then Would I do it again Would I do it again?… Sounds like Miss Eilish has learned what fame really means. I feel for her, so much. I digress. Zola Blood are too genuinely gifted to end up grist for the endless, mindless, fame-o-tron 3.0 I’m convinced sits somewhere in the basement of Disney churning out carbon copies of blandly attractive types that don’t need to sing well or play any instruments or write any music, the machine will make them famous anyway. The loss of personhood, of all privacy, of the certainty that those who love you really love YOU and not what you can do for them…screw that. I wish for better for them. That they can make enough to not have to stress about rent and groceries and can focus on making music, and that they find and keep a devoted but smallish fan base. No more, no less.
