I love these types of episodes!!
Ya, more of these please!
*or buy sagamore port finished or sherry finished 😊
Would have been cool to try using a Sagmore Rye!
Great video guys, really enjoyed this different concept. Super fun to watch!
That was fun! Be interested in more like this…
This was so great!
I used to do this with sherry and scotch. Corryvrekan with a teaspoon of oloroso is phenomenal.
Ultra smooooooth. This was a really cool concept video too. Would love to see other "poor man's" combinations in future episodes
I believe that everyone should try blending and experiment in creating their own favorite 🥃
Scotch + port episode. I did a Laphroaig + port and it was awesome
Wish this was dropped in December!!!
Now I wish I kept my old bottle of Midwinters to see if I could fool my bourbon friends, lol
Dillon sticking up for the working folk is a real surprise what a king
My goodness, Dillon was feeling himself so hard in this episode LOL 😭💀
When they were using good MGP and the price was under $100, even below $90 it was a tasty limited releases bottle to enjoy and share. Now they’re not getting the good MGP and they are blend their own distillate which I was never crazy about and they’re charging almost twice the price at retail, forget about it. Like the other fellow said, get the sagamore Sherry finish or a Barrell Dovetail. Of mix Your own like Dillon. Finished whiskies are basically cocktails.
Shout out to the Pulitzer Prize/Academy Award winning OppenDillon for his contributions to the Working Man's Whiskey Society!
🏆 🥃
Great vid, I thought I was a weirdo, mixing wine and whiskey. After watching this video, I Am Just Curious
I think that you should reenact that scene from 1955 Movie Mr. Roberts where they make Scotch.
I used the 2019 release of Bulliet 12 year MGP rye. And some Tawny Port. It turned out better than the recent batches of MWND... Eventually I'll try the same thing with the 2024 release of Bulliet 12 year, but haven't gotten around to it.
Wasn't the rumor that the early batches (acts) of MWND used MGP exclusively or is my memory wrong on that? Regardless, I started to lose interest in MWND right around Act 5 as the quality was decreasing in my opinion.
@@faust451 yep batches 1-4 were exclusively MGP.
Wow...that ratio. I have done the traditional recipe. Pour out 20ml of rendevous and replace with 20 ml or port. I have done a ruby, a tawny and a combo of both. I also did a white port since I could not get last year's encore. All delicious but I will have to play with adding more port to see.
How did you feel about the 10? I am one of the few who loved it because it was different. Sadly I did not get one. the previous years were not much different than my poor man versions. By the time I tasted it and found it so different it was gone
Passed on this bottle. Too expensive. For $199 I want it aged.
This one was very entertaining! Keep it up guys
Like this, I feel this way about many Finished Bourbons.
I believe a part of the success of the finishing of rye whiskey, is not only the fact the fortified wine finishing rounds out the spiciness. But also that a young rye can be rather delicious.
Re: the Halo Effect, picked up the debut album in Tokyo with bonus track. Great album.
If Port is fortified wine then can we call this portified rye?😂
Dr Dr - how long do you think the mix will stay fresh before the port breaks down (as it does on its own rather fast)? Have you experimented?
Great vid and sick music!! Loved the new music there, don’t think it goes unappreciated, Dutch! 😎
How long before the port goes bad, does it last as long
Based on his outfit, I thought Dr. Dillon was dressed as a Cliniqe cosmetic salesperson from the mall. Porty High West shall be mixed this weekend.
Found this interesting and very helpful. I have one bottle left that I paid $99 for several years ago. Now I can't find it at all and prices start $150, it's not worth it at that price and frankly $99 was pushing it. So does the port need to be aged or not?
I don’t know your history of DIY finishing but just adding X wine to Y spirit merely points you in the general direction + or - 90 degrees of a desired profile. You really need some sort of oak cask; even 1 liter; then some air time after the casking to get an idea where you’re gonna land.
Prime example is I PX sherry finished some Yamazaki. I initially mixed PX to the Yamazaki and it was not the greatest. I then tried added it to a PX seasoned cask. after several weeks, it was still off. after several weeks of the Yamazaki in the cask, I transferred the Yamazaki back into a bottle and letting it sit with air space in the bottle for a few days. After that, it came out amazing. I did the same thing with Hakushu, duplicated a $6000 2014 sherry finished Hakushu.
Highly recommend you get a 1L cask, season it with port for few months, dump it, add the rye and check it every few days or so.
Tawny or Ruby Port?
Just based on taste, I always through that MWND was rendezvous aged in port, so the fact that those were the two winners does not surprise me. Despite the messaging, the fact that the MWND did so well in the blinds, I'll probably just stick to buying MWND.
OK Dr. Dr. Dillon could you make Macallan M. This was very interesting episode.
So cool, and enjoyable to watch as usual!!!.... I have to track down my old Gilbert Science Lab and get busy.
I think I’m going to try this. I might throw the Green River Rye in there as well.
Hell yeah, stickin' it to the man! Definitely trying this.
Great episode idea. Midwinter's is gross, IMO. I was super excited to get a bottle after all the hype and felt like I was robbed of $150. It tastes like $30 rye mixed with $20 port. Based on this episode, we can tell it clearly is. If these "blends" had time to marry in a cask I'm sure more would have beat out the actual $150 bottle.
I've been to multiple distilleries where they flat out say "We use barrels that are not as good and finish them in wine casks to make them good enough to drink". The best part - whiskey drinkers have been fooled into thinking they should pay a hefty premium for finishing. Finishing is often a double dip for profit - they are getting something out of their failed barrels... for a premium.
What's worse is brands like Barton who cherry pick out their good stock and sell the rest to independent distilleries. If you buy something that was sourced from Barton and then finished in wine barrels (I'm looking at you Total Wine Black Ridge Port Barrel Special Reserve) you are getting some absolute garbage tier whiskey. Imagine, it was not good enough for Barton to sell under their own label and then it wasn't good enough for the independent bottler to sling without adding wine. Should just buy some Black label Barton and and stir in a packet of Kool aide at that point.
Good experiment. Have enough of the Acts 7, 8 and 9 to pass on Act 11 at 150 SRP. Bought an Act 11 for a friend.
As a lowly electrical engineer, I bow to the expansive knowledge of the double phD... 😅🍻
Oooosss dr Dylan PHD PHD🤩
I wonder if the port will oxidize in thr blend... let's now blend with Prisoner wine to make Prisoner's share?!
ugh, port will take longer to oxidize vs wine. and Prisoner should be dumped..but drink what you love!
Well at least this verifies my assertion that MWND shouldn't be worth even $100. High West has never really impressed me though. I don't get the hype. I'll stick to the unfinished New Riff and Wilderness Trail.
Moooore Dr. Dillon PHD PHD
