Neil Jones may be a Pro dancer, but even he was confused by the mysterious art of Cossack dancing. Here's what happened when he tried his hand (and feet!) at the unusual dance.

I am a German Bavarian Russian Ukrainian eastern European countries French African Irish Swiss decent person. I always love to watch the Cossack dancers, they always say that white man can't jump but yet what do you actually think of Cossack dancers who jump high in the air. They actually go sideways like a crab which is actually my favorite part of the Cossack dancing. As an American citizen I don't like America's dancing at all but only Cossack dancing. I tried to dance just like those Cossacks but yet I couldn't get it right for several years as a kid in the 70s and early 80s.

Most centuries old warrior communities have a physically strenuous form of dance. For instance, the Cossacks and the Sikhs. It keeps them more fit before battle. During modern battles, being from a warrior clan is virtually meaningless: everybody in the warriors gets mowed down by enemy machine gun fire. During peacetime however, it shows. If an officer of any ethnicity is assigned such a regiment from a warrior clan, a soldier of a warrior nation may say " You want to win a war game contest! We will win it for you." that officer will invariably win almost all war game contests, if the soldiers under his command are from a historically brave clan .. in above video, atleast half of the dancers are likely of British ethnicity. Also, quick thinking ability is a factor for an army to stand out in terms of battlefield achievement.

Just for the record, Cossacks were not of Ukrainian origin. It's not a specific regional group, but a word that simply means "free man" or "rogue". They were mercenaries from all across the Russian empire, stationed where the fighting was worst, Ukraine and the Caucuses mostly, and they all had their own unique dances. I'd like to see Neil try the Cossack Lezginka dance of the Terek region.
