Well in nature orchids usually live in a rainforest type habitat and use their roots to cling to the bark of trees so this method is probably my more like home for them than being in a substrate.
orchids aren’t really exclusively rainforest plants actually! there are like 50 native orchids in New York state. i honestly see them most in soil on the ground. that’s why it’s really important to figure out what kind of orchid you have *in my opinion* because their natural conditions vary a toooon
I'm with the others. Just give it a go. You'll get a hang of things. I was afraid for a long time too. I started with one succulent and now have four. Then eventually me and my husband got an orchid. It was from Kroger and it was nearly dead when we got it. We worked together and over a year later the orchids still with us. Neither of us had taken care of any kinds of plants before, so if you want a plant. Go for it!
I have killed many plants before, and now I managed to make them live now. Learning from your mistakes is the trick to getting better at carrying. We all start as amateurs at some point, so don't get discouraged.
I have kept a few orchids in water before planting them in bark, just to help them rehab their roots and rehydrate them. Usually what happens is this: -I bought them either not realizing they had root rot or the pot I planted them in was too large and their roots mostly rotted -Cut away any rot, wait a few hours for them to heal a bit. -Get a big enough container to fully soak the remaining roots. I usually let them soak for ~5 hours a day with roots submerged for about a week. Then I switch them to just enough water to cover about half an inch of their roots and leave them like that 24/7, changing the water as needed. -I continue this as roots start to grow, and increase the water level to cover the new roots. Once there is a pretty good amount of roots ~5 inches long, I go ahead and repot the orchid.
This makes so much sense why my orchid won’t die. Not that I’m trying to make it unalive. It’s just thriving and I’m not doing anything but water it like once a month but when I do I don’t do it “right” I let that soak. But not too deep. And I forget it be soaking for days or weeks and then boom buds
I'm behind you for sure! When I went to an orchid farm in Thailand they were all grown like air plants with ALL THE HUMIDITY and upsidedown and they were glorious and I've wanted nothing more than to grow then like that ever since.
Theres a lot! Some really easy ones are pothos and monstera’s (the smaller ones like swiss cheese are a bit easier than the bigguns) You can choose to propagate them that way, as sometimes long term its hard to keep them nourished with just water, but pothos can deft be water only (especially if you have an aquarium)
I successfully grew peace lily and basically all kind of vines, even zz plant leaf cuttings. Be sure you remove all dirt and that you change water regularly (if you don't have a bubbling system) and you will be allright!
There’s one called “lucky bamboo” (it’s not actually bamboo it’s a dracena but it looks like bamboo) that can grow in a bowl of water forever. There’s also some carnivorous plants that need to be kept in a saucer of water but I wouldn’t recommend those to a beginner because they’re a little tricker (they’re not hard there’s just a lot of specific things they need)
@@Animallovercomedian Actually lucly bamboo does much better in dirt. Lives about 3 years in water, but 5 years in dirt. And certainly not "forever" in either method. It is often mislabeled in petstores as an aquatic plant for aquariums but it will just die, it is not meant to be fully submerged in water by any means.
I’ve always thought I was too much of a beginner to take care of orchids… but your video tips make me feel more confident in trying to grow them! :) I would like to know if I can use something like water beads/orbeez to grow them in? I just feel like water beads would be easier to keep from going swampy and also I can get colored ones and grow it in a glass container!
i love orchids but i can't grow them except in water, i mean, they survive but in water they give their best, even with minimum care, i don't know if i'm doing something wrong or if it's my house. (I doubt I'm doing something wrong because I've literally tried them all) so for now it's useless to make unnecessary efforts, they look good in the water and I leave them as they are 🤷
Your shorts inspired me to steal the orchid of my moms back porch she was water boarding all summer. Thankfully I’ve gotten it to grow back some healthy roots. It’s currently in a repurposed glass from a lamp I think. I just liked you could see through it and put a mesh at the bottom and tray of Lecca to keep some moisture but not overwhelm it.
Second tip: if the orchid is experiencing root rot you can trim off the dead or dying roots let it dry for an hour or so and use distilled water at first until you see new growth then you can use aquarium water so the plant has something to eat without the worry of to harsh of fertilizer burn😊
Personally I've never had success growing them this way. They usually do develop rot issues eventually. I've had better luck leaving it bare rooted but mounted on wood or rock and then spritzing it daily.
I hope you answer this because this orchid was from my mamas funeral. For almost 3 years she bloomed and grew and was happy. But she was getting too big so I repotted her and now she only has one leaf left. Helllllppppp.
Yep! She addresses this in several shorts (she fertilizes once a month, for a week) and even covers her preferred brands. I’m sure you’ll fine them if you look. ☺️
From my experience, fertilizer isn't really necessary for mature orchid plants you buy from the store. If you wanted to grow an orchid from a bulb as a hydroponic growth, they make special solutions for fertilization to put in the water. You can get them in either powder or liquid form.
I had my orchid in orchid bark and was watering about once a week. The bark still stemmed wet but my orchid leaves were going limp as if I was not watering. I put it in a water vase and it is doing much better! Does anyone know why my orchid wasn’t getting proper care in orchid bark?
I have been given an orchid my mom has had for about 14 years. What is the best way to find out how to care for it? It has so many stems and I have no clue what to do to keep.from killing it.
HELP! I tried this. The orchid sprouted a new stalk of buds. But then the roots all rotted within a couple of weeks. Zero roots! Can this plant be saved
Probably need to be re-potted orchid bark is just like soil you plant other plants in it gets depleted of nutrients over time. She has a good video on re-potting orchids. Might be worth a look. Spagnum moss is good too some people mix a little on both.
Umm don't you want the roots to root?🤔 I mean not always but I've grown spider plants in water to make new or more spider plants so that the roots can well umm ROOT. Edit: I apologize about the tone of this. Just that person's comment that you're replying to made no sense.

Do I grow plants? No. Am I planning on it? No. Do I still follow this page and enjoy every minute of it? Heck Yeah!
You almost made me buy an orchid in Krogers yesterday, but I'm so afraid to kill plants 😩
She has another video saying you are not a plant killer you just haven’t learned the skill yet so you should and begin learning the skill!
It's okay to kill plants. I killed so many 🥲 but you will learn from your mistakes and eventually be able to keep them alive 👌🏻

Aquaponics is awesome... I grew some egg plants and cherry tomatoes... Even dragon fruit is growing well
Yep, I've been trying LECA pebbles but the full hydroponics is actually the best method for me!
