As someone who is doing her bachelor's degree in biotechnology and is aspiring to be a researcher, this is very easily one of the life changing videos for me. Thank you so much for sharing in such depth!
I don't normally comment, but this has been the most informative / valuable workflow video I have ever seen. I always hoped something like this existed, thank you for sharing.
Yes! The other thing useless how to research videos also do is say, “I won’t show you how I research because everyone has a different way to research.” Thank you for sharing.
I think I will share three other methods.
The two document method. Research in one doc. Final in other.
The Google sheet and with quotes and your comments method. Put relevant quotes in one volume with page. In second Colindale’s say why it’s important. Print out, Read, markup then write the essay. (Might do sheet several times before writing. )
And the three document method aka phd-ish 1st literature review. Paper, author main argument and how it is relevant. 2nd doc mind map of best arguments optional. Highlight and group themes. 3rd write an outline from mind map. Do not delete it. Print out and put on wall or desk. 4th Check order of outline for flow. then copy paste arguments from doc 1 the literature review. Add joining sentences.
Thank you.
I have been using mendeley since the beginning of my undergrad so I have a lot of sources in there. I was so annoyed when they removed the app from iPad so have been toying with the idea of moving to Zotero ever since. However the thought of moving all my sources over now I’m at the end of my post grad filled me with dread. After watching this video and seeing just how much easier it would make my life, I have decided it’s worth the effort. Thanks so much for sharing. Can’t wait to implement this new system into my current workflow 🙌🏼
Well, figured out how to import all my sources from mendeley into Zotero so now I’m a happy woman 😂
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to explain your process.
Perfect workflow video. thanks for sharing
So you're just out here saving lives, eh? Thank you for this!! 10/10 Copying it step by step now
Every minute has a tip! Thank you so much for this video!
Great demonstration!
The third time I watched this video; the First time was mindblowing and overwhelming, the second time watched and built at the same time and the third time, optimizing and understanding better of reasons why you have done things in your way. Thank you so much for putting it all together!
My new series shows how I write hopefully open the doors as it were to how it is that I actually work. 😁
Very helpful tutorial! Thank you
The best obsidian tutorial by far. Congrats.
Excellent video
I wish I watched this video 30y ago lol , thanks so much for this well explained content, I never stopped researching though, so will put this at work.
this is a really nice demo. unfortunately i don't need to reference anything but this makes me want to lol
you should... even if it is only for you... to then ensure you can say, find other works by the same name, etc.
I'm really gonna have to start reading my course PDFs in Zotero, especially with the notes and tagging ability.
Interesting. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this life saving video.. I was super stressed and frustrated thinking where to start and what to do.. cuz nothing worked...
Thank you.. Hoping to see more like this...
I am starting a series sharing how I write with Obsidian. The first video is quite all over the place but feel free to ask any question!
@@DannyHatcherTech to be able to an actual workflow like this would be cool. Like how you read a paper
I am stuck in where I see an interesting point and it is also cited by three people in this paper. So how would you incorporate that point in to your paper?
Like do you then go and find theese other 3 sources and read and find that related area and then add the citation or how do people actually do it irl..
@@cami3402 It depends 😅most of the time I try to find original sources but for interpretations the found source works fine.
@@DannyHatcherTech and also I kind of hate it that zotero doesnt have that option to update the annotations in to a already made annotation note. Is there a way you can make it update rather than dragging and dropping things inside
@@cami3402 you can persist sections in an imported note but it does require a manual import for new annotations. That is just an ofdline tool thing.
Love seeing cool workflows and systems like this. When I was working on my Masters in 2019 and 2020 I used Google sheets with query and lookup functions to organize my notes and quotes by themes. When I filtered out to a theme all the research was presented by source in a readable format. Worked well for me but definitely not as polished as this.
I wrote my masters in Notion + Word which was a mess. I wish I had Obsidian back then 🙃
Superb! I fully agree with the comment of @remmaria. Thank you very much!
I also find the manual handling of citations after exporting too cumbersome.
Thank you so much for this wonderful walkthrough. I am having so much trouble with the template. At ~6:41 in the video you say I can download this, but I can't find a link for it in the description. Can you please help
The related article should have a link to my page on customizing Zotero Templates. I have just added a link to that article as well.
This is perfect. You have just saved me so much time! You have turned two amazing apps into a powerful writing process. I LOVE what you have done. I think you have just made it possible for me to complete a thesis!@@DannyHatcherTech
I hope you are doing well. Can you explain what making relationships and connections between information means as i found these terms to be a bit vague and what do you think of blooms taxonomy and what would you recommend instead of blooms taxonomy.
Blooms taxonomy is outdated and in my opinion should be retired from eduactional practice.
Connections in Obsidian are links.
@@DannyHatcherTech what do you recommend instead of blooms taxonomy for both learning and studying in general?
@@DannyHatcherTech I don't use obsidian or any note taking apps.Do you have any recommendations for establishing meaningful connections and relationships between information?
This video is awesome, congrats!
Apologies - I have just seen my site is down. Working on a fix.
Sorry if i tired you,but do you think that rhizomatic Thinking(or rhizomatic learning) is effective for studying?
Non-linear thinking can be effective yes. Your meaning of rhizomatic learning might be different from so I don't want to avoid sharing opinions on potential misunderstood meanings 😁
Do you have better alternatives for blooms taxonomy for studying?
Blooms taxonomy comes from cognitive psychology, my approach is from ecologocal psychology so an alternative for me would be taking an ecological approach.
Introduction to ecological psycjology book by Julia and Jeff is a good place to start.
The link to the supporting article isn't working (for me at least).. Can I find your Zotero Template elsewhere so I can copy/paste it? Thanks!
The article link was likely changed on my website.
Search on my website for zotero template essays
@@DannyHatcherTech It still says "There has been a critical error on this website." Is there another place to get the template?
Can you tell me how can i apply non linear thinking to studying.
That is a conversation best suited on a forum not CZcams comments.
how do you add spaces to the citation key formula?
also, would you mind including the template you used in the description?
cheers
The citation key ia in Zotero. I use better bibtex to help customize it.
@@Nedlius my recent video goes over zotero twmplates and has different versions in the the related article.
Can I ask why you write essays? Are you in college or just do it to learn something that you feel like learning about?
I do it to help my research but also to share ideas.
Why do you think blooms is outdated?
Loads of reasons. I will write an article about it at some point but for now maybe look at - 'Why it is time to retire bloom's taxonomy' by Joana Stella Kompa
I see those IQ-related sources... W
You should have an alternative paste in Obsidian, so it includes the [[link]] automatically when needed. You are copying that reference one time too many as is. Also, the last step, adding back the real reference seems unnecessarily clumsy. I think you can do better with these tools. Good luck
