      Krismeliss86 right! and companies are so sneaky about it. I’ll find something that doesn’t have fragrance listed, and it’ll have a lot of good ingredients like salicylic acid, hyaluronic acid, etc. and then I’ll spot “lavender oil” “peppermint oil” or “orange peel oil (for fragrance)” and it drives me crazy. OR, something will say “un-scented” or “no SYNTHETIC fragrances” but there’s still fragrance in there somewhere

  • @M377ow
    @M377ow Pƙed 4 lety +549

    Squalene vs. squalane
    Squalene (with an “e”) is a lipid produced naturally by your own skin cells. Unfortunately, the amount of squalene your body produces declines with age.
    Peak production of this natural moisturizer occurs in the teen years, with production slowing down in your 20s or 30s. As a result, your skin becomes drier and rougher.
    Squalene isn’t only natural in humans. The moisturizer is naturally present in olives, rice bran, and sugarcane. It’s also found and harvested from shark livers.
    Squalene must be hydrogenated to be included in skin care products.
    Animal and plant squalene is too unstable to be used in skin care products. When exposed to oxygen, it can become rancid and spoil quickly.
    Before it can be used in skin care products, squalene must be hydrogenated into squalane (with an “a”), which is a stable form of the molecule.
    Hydrogenation is the process of converting squalene from an unsaturated oil to a saturated oil (squalane). Hydrogenation makes the oil more skin-friendly and helps increase its shelf life.

      Does hydrogenating squalene into squalane produce transfats?? đŸ€”

    • @michellet4220
      @michellet4220 Pƙed 4 lety +11

       transfat is referring to the orientation of the hydrogens (or other functional group) on the C=C double bond, which is only possible in unsaturated hydrocarbons. Since squalane are single C-C bonds, it simply can't have a trans orientation, so it can't be transfats. side note: the longer the hydrocarbon chain, the better it will absorb onto your skin cuz after all we are organic being meaning made of hydrocarbons.

I live in Florida so it gets very hot and humid here. My skin use to be combination but it has changed to dry, very dry and flaky especially around my chin and nose area. I have tried so many skin care items and nothing really worked. Some items worked for a short time then stopped. I have ordered many of your recommendations, so far I have received the simple gel wash. I've only had it for 2 days but I must say, WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!! My skin does not feel all tight after using, it even feels hydrated. I can not wait to receive the other items I've purchased. Thank you so much for the time and effort you have put in your videos. Am gonna say only one thing about 'marine algae' Cosmetics & Skincare products: I'm worried about the actual sustainability of the sources as these are *huge multibillion dollar a year businesses!* I'm an Alaskan Native who has seen firsthand how the oceans are being affected by pollution, increasing temperatures by melting glaciers & polar caps, am tired of watching marine life wash up dead in numbers unseen ever before & our food sources going down, as well as several species of birds, seals, walruses, others not able to procreate due to lack of sea ice. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video, appreciate learning from you. Thanks for sharing & have a great day today!

    Just bought today two more products of them. I loved the exfoliator with glycolic acid, it's much better than any exfoliator. One thing that I really love about brands, besides everything the you mentioned so well, is when they produce mini or travel size bottles, this is so so so amazing, because if the product doesn't fit to your skin you didn't spend a lot, and biossance has travel size and samples. And this I like very much, I hate when I want a product that there's no mini size to test, because I like to test products. Thanks for all the knowledge. If you can, please do a video like this one about shiseido, I'd like to hear your thoughts about it. @bionotes7153 Pƙed 4 lety +3

      MeeNee Thao lots of cosmetic pcp brands use endocrin disrupters, potential carcinogens, formaldehyde donors, skin irritants etc. The first thing my OCHEM professor said when he came into our class to introduce himself for the semester was to stop reading the ingredients lists on our shampoo and such or we’ll never be able to use anything on our bodies again. I still read ingredients and I use biossance and a few other “clean beauty” brands. Clean is subjective. Some brands that don’t advertise as clean I consider to have clean ingredients and vice versa some “clean” “natural” brands I would not consider non toxic. Not all synthetics are bad, squalene being an example made in lab. However, most synthetics are more shelf stable. This is a good thing but it also means it can stick around in your body longer since your body hasn’t been evolutionarily conditioned over the millions of years the ingredients and mammals existed to be able to break it down. Even belladonna a known natural poison can be tolerated and removed from the body over time with low doses (and is used sometimes for eye dilation). Natural can poison bacteria without having long term effects on the human body since it can be processed.
