How do you know when you need to jump vs glide onto a box when there’s a gap?

You just go for it. If you break your neck, it means you needed to jump before the feature.

      a) Watch others. If somebody else is sliding on, you're fine. If nobody's around:
      b) Go as slow as possible, so slow that you'll eventually stop on the ramp, and check if the nose catches. Then hop clear of the feature and approach with more speed on the next run. Or even better: walk uphill and immediately go for it!
