《商君书》从君主独裁的角度，推行法治，注重农战，主张极刑厚赏，以富国强兵为急务，而以去智愚民为手段，自有其历史意义。但此书名为任法，实则明术，着眼点唯在于如何使臣而不致大权旁落，如何弱民而驱之从事耕战，而视知识为寇仇，以智慧为虮虱，似为提倡君主权威，其实教导君主与一切人为敌。因而此书在中世纪中国，既是阳儒阴法的专制者的枕中鸿秘，也是历代学者口诛笔伐的对象。
