I've always found this game A LOT better than the Dungeon & Dragons black box. I mean, the artwork, the cards, the possibilities are way better than on D&D box. Also, the rules are pretty similar, so I didn't have any reason to get it. I do think that with the information provided you're pretty capable of creating your own characters.
We were totally into Dragon Strike back then (or at least I was) and has we were already playing Dungeons & Dragons for 15 years, I stripped out all of the parts for Dragon Strike. Yes, I drew the boxes on the bottom of the cards for the Dragon Strike clips and lettered the Dragon Strike effects on the bottom.
21:08 That map in the Dragon Quest ad appears to be the Black Box’s dungeon map: the Salt Mines of Zanzer Tem… with a Dragon Quest logo pasted over it!
Well, Daniel Dungeon. I've never played Dragon Quest. But, I have played HeroQuest and I've done tons of videos about it which is on my channel. I'd love to play Dragon Quest.
Not sure if it's worth tracking down...maybe? I'm probably going to be selling mine now that I've archived it. With everything else we both have, I don't see it getting to the table.
Just wanted to say thx. You made me discover Dungeon Universalis and i joined their mail list a couple of months ago, now i got a mail about their upcoming new kickstarter :) with some updated components and cards for all of the bestiary (or most of it) cant wait.
What TSR did with the game cards here, like with the images on the cards, points to the laziness of what GF9 and WotC did with the magic item card and monster cards they put together. Many of those cards have no images at all; here in a board game, there is an image on every card. Great work on TSR's part. I'm definitely going to be looking for this game or at the very least any of the cards from it.
That gameboard in that advertisement is Zanzer Tem's Dungeon. I do believe it came with the black boxed DND game. I had it but my box fell apart. Now all it's pieces are in with my DragonStrike box
I can't believe there are only three quests!?! So 80% or more of those monster cards, cutouts, spells, traps, etc. won't ever even be used (unless you make your quest, no thank you). I couldn't find any expansion packs either. This seemed so cool & I was about to go to ebay until you said it only had three quests. Man, what a disappointment. If I am wrong or misinterpreted this & someone knows otherwise, please let me know. Thanks!
Never heard of this, I wonder if it made it to the UK... At some point you are going to have to do a Heroquest video. Heroquest might have the best card art of any game ever produced...
Races as class is B/X and BECMI :) Cool video. It looks super bland compared to the likes of WHQ though. I think as an introductory set the red box is still (ironically) the gold standard!
I have the game,. It's very parctical, the last time I played it was in 2020 during the quarentine playing it solo with 6 characters, using the booklet as DM. A very original experience, but each game lasted 3 to 5 hours (fine by me!). One thing some owners of the game may want to know is that the manual says there are 30 special equipment cards but there are 31 cards. Also, the art of the elf (Glorin) is not an elf, it depicts a Half elf with beard, (a very famous half elf byt the way, Tanis Hlaf-Elven of the Dragonlance) the same with the Armor Golem monster card, it depicts Lord Soth, a terrible Death Knight and that''s worse! thankfully the iron golem stand is not Lord Soth or my minis would have jumped over the table and run like hell. AND the board that appears in the advertisement you're showing, is the board of the D&D black box you show in the next page, I think they didn't have the board ready for the promotional. Dragonquest is a BEAUTIFUL game. very nice video.
It would be good to know what DC games were good in the 90s outside of the Warhammer games. I know 1vs many aren't your thing but I am super interested to see a video by you on Heroquest.
To tell you the truth, I don't have a lot to say about HQ. At least nothing that hasn't said a hundred times already. I probably like it less than most people, and that's probably just because I don't have nostalgia for it. I like DragonStrike a lot more, and I've done a video for that. I have a playlist in which I look at these older games.
@@TheDungeonDive sorry Daniel I just saw your comment below to someone asking the same question. I value your opinion that's all. Yes I've seen it your DS video thank you.
That theory at the end cracked me up LOL, good stuff.
I owned it when I was a kid, in the early 90s. It was the Brazilian edition and it came only with the plastic minis of the heroes...
Me too! I had this as a kid here in Brazil and I still have it to this day, very well preserved. This is incredibly nostalgic.
I remember playing Dragon Quest and Hero Quest I believe in 94. First RPG I've played.
3:39 The game art of 40k the Black templars codex got me into 40k

Yep!
I loved to play it, it was so much fun. And I still love the art!
So many great pieces of art.
Oui, excellent jeu old school. 👍😃

I remember it, never played it.
Not heard of this one before going to see if I can track one down of the bay of e! Great video and informative as usual

@@TheDungeonDive yeah it wouldn't be something Id want to spend loads on £10 at the most
What the hell!? I literally unboxed mine today and went online to look for reviews...4 minutes after you uploaded this
Hahah! Synchronicity!

Yeah, for sure! I'm looking forward to what they have in store for DUN. Should be great!
I still have my copy but mainly just use the models now for 5e DnD.

Totally sacrificed the friend
Had this as a kid, played with my brothers. Would love to see a live play of all three scenarios.
Bravo pour cette vidéo. Je travaille sur une version de Dragonquest améliorée et avec la possibilité de jouer sans DM.

the 'board' for the D&D black box was a paper mat, kinda sad

It was really meant as an intro into the wider world of D&D.
No expansion pack, but it is possible to create your own quests or play without DM with some house rules.
The board in the pamflet is the same as in the Black box it looks like. Zanzer's dungeon.
Yep yep. Zanzer Tem's dungeon is interesting layout if a bit linear and not really modular.
Lol is Drizzt, Buernor, Wulfgar and Regis
Superbe vidéo. 👍😃

The cards are nice. The thing is, I have absolutely nothing to say about HQ that hasn’t been said a million times before.
@@TheDungeonDive true, and you have covered Advanced Heroquest and Warhammer Quest extensively. Okay will let you off 😁
Definitely made it to the U.K., I bought one in Norwich many, many years ago. No idea where my copy has gone though, but still have the dice.
Hahaha totally, the whole satanic panic of the 80s and 90s definately made the game more fun 😅
Lived through that!

"Glorin" bears an uncanny resemblance to Tanis half-elven. 🤓
Must be a coincidence! ;)
3:48 for the dice, why is the red one so hard to find

Interesting what they packed into the box...
I may need to hunt this down
Dragon Quest was SPI's fantasy rpg system from 1981-1983.
Wow! Those arts alone are worth the asking price on ebay. just hope your video is not pushing up the price!
I don’t think I have that kind of influence. :)
It’s been at like 30 bucks for 6+ years. It’s history, but they made a ton of them. Most ad&d stuff is crazy cheap.
Live play of those scenarios please?
I don't typically do let's play videos. I don't enjoy them.
@@TheDungeonDive damn
I hate how this made it so the video game series dragon quest had to be called dragon warrior for the first 7 games in the west until 2004
That’s a weird thing to hate.
Am at 1:24 in. The hands waving around, is quite annoying. I am done.
Thanks for giving me a minute and twenty-four seconds of your life. I can’t tell you how much it means to me!
Lol what an odd thing to be annoyed about in a demo video. How else is he supposed to show it off? Telekinesis?
Is telekinesis in d and d lol
Avoid HowToBasic at all costs, in that case.
