Just wanted to say Thanks Matt, Great Video outlining the whole install...Also wanted to add that the coupon code is only good for the Billet hubs
I did a similar swap on my V8 s10. I had the stock rotor machined down to just the hub and make a bracket that bolted to the spindle. Went to the junk yard and grabbed the front brakes on a 98-02 F body (the junk yard car had brand new EBC Rotors pads and calipers that I paid $30 total for) bolted everything up and it worked great!
Looks great! Nice job man. Can’t wait to see what else you do to Trans-Am
Just did this to my 91 Z and wow what a difference! Great video Matt!!
I need to look into this on my 91! Doing subframe connectors today though, so that's a start!
Man I’m always excited to see one of your videos pop up. Thanks for always helping us out.
Surprise premiere! Watch till the very end for a little hint hint..
Hey Matt!
Are you picking up an LT engine for the TA?
T/A Turbo motor?
loving the synthwave on these vids
Its about time!! Been waiting what seems like forever for trans am content. Always worth the wait
We all need some bigger rounder slow downers in our lives. Nice.
I sure do appreciate all your videos lsxmatt. Very informative and entertaining 👌
That is an awesome conversion. Great video.
Excellent conversion kit. I think I'll be doing the same for my car at some point.
Thanks Matt! I've been patiently waiting for this too drop 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You are very strong to be able to lift the rotor with one hand. I was struggling to lift my Porsche Cayenne turbo rotor with two hands when I did the cross drilled rotor upgrade. Great video 👍😀
Nice brakes. On my 85 Irocz I had Willwood 6 pistons on. Big world of difference. Needed them with my drive train I dropped in.
Love watching the incredible motivation brotha.
Great video. Can’t wait for the powder coat video and brake caliper refurbish.
nicely done. Great upgrade for thirdgens
Amazing work mattt👏
I added stainless steel woven front brake hoses on my TA and it made a big difference in pedal feel!
Brings back good memories for me I had a 1988 gta and a 1989 formula 350 ran 10.8@125 on spray
Great video really appreciate it. Editing is 👌🏻
That's a nice upgrade. We all need plenty of whoa!!!
Great video, cool project 👌🏽
Thanks for the video, I’m going to try it on my 73 Impala 🙏🏾
I put the C5 brakes on my 1988 TA. Very similar. My 17" Borbet wheels barely cleared. In fact I took away a blonde one or two from the caliper ribs. Stock brakes are terrible. I used to run some experimental pads back in the day. They worked great and I think they made it into retail eventually.
Nice job
I just did this to my 88 gta 3 months ago and the 16" gta wheels fit
But you need to rotate them rear to front and the front gets a 4.5mm spacer
And then it looks stock again
I love it
I used to use the brake handle on my 91 Camaro just to feel what good back braking should feel like getting in my mind what I was looking for.
I know the Trans Am the hard top came with disk brakes in the back 350 1LE package.
Ya know to get a the direct Corvette motor of that year put in and then upgraded.
Or for the fun of it if you can get a ZR1 engine would be an amazing treat.
Side Tip:3 point strut tower brace from Detroit Speed is a must the understear is the worst no different than a boat with full power steering and a soft suspension 4,500 pounds super soft side walls same same in expectations tring to take turn maybe even a sub/frame connector.
Carbon fiber wheels,o yeah....
What is funny is my 1988 GMC 1500 has the same factory front brakes🤣 As always awesome job!!
great video. cant wait to upgrade my brakes
Well informed video, need this kit for my 3rd gen shitbox
The 1LE calipers were specific to the F-body cars. They were adapted from the vette calipers (which were wide enough for the F-body rotor) and machined for F-body (location of banjo connector).
The 1LE came from the Player's series that started in 1986. Teams would run through the corners when the brakes got hot. In short order GM made up a 12" kit consisting of Caprice rotors, a specially cast Brembo caliper, and an adapter. These lasted for two seasons after which the 1LE caliper became production as it was already DOT certified where as the Brembo was not (and probably cheaper since it was already in the parts bin.
8:15 are those my side cutters? 😂😂
Great vid as always Matt. BBU is the best, love my kit.
Awesome. I’ve been waiting
Terrific video I’m a month away from ordering my brakes for my 92
I put a 4th gen brake booster and master cylinder in my 89 GTA. That made a huge diffence. My brake pedal is not spongy anymore. I haven't even upgraded my front brakes yet.
Video is cool and informative.
I can’t stop thinking that those calipers look like the ones one my 2003 tahoe. I have extra calipers maybe it’ll work.
Outstanding video!! My 92 Z28 disk brake are a little different than on your trans am and it has disk all the way around . I'm sure there factory so I'm guessing the brake kit will still work on it.
Excellent video...
love the videos matt. Now you have to throw in a tubular k member next lol
Great job.
On the proportioning valve, you can put a stiffer 19lb spring in it or shim the existing spring for more rear brake pressure
Hey Matt new to the channel. Awesome video.
That's one hell of a great video.
Just bought a 88 Trans Am GTA and searching for how and what to upgrade brakes wise.
About the bearing preload- I saw you didn't do anything special, just inserted them in place. Aby special instrcutikns on how determining a good preload maybe?
Thanks mam!
Love the trans am
Slick, enjoyed this vid, as always well done. Question, You eluded to a "spacer" I am currently running a 4th gen TA rear end on my 83 Camaro, this allowed me to step way up to 88 17" Corvette Wheels, love em. However, do the new BB aluminum hubs for the front move the face of the rotor in or out at all? Thanks
i would love to do this to my 87 formula. you should do some sleeper upgrades and take it to lime rock for some road racing and see how it does with a stock style engine
If I could just get the hubs Id be good to go.. I have a 1995 c1500 "GMT400 aka obs" 2wd single cab stepside "show trucks usa conversion" and all I need now is a brake up!
5.3 lm7 swap Sloppy Stage 2 cam, Holley Turbo manifold system Vs racing 7875 Gen 2, P59 pcm simple tune, T56 conversion..
However I cant stop like your Tahoe!
Those companies who make "kits" for these trucks (far few in between) want THOUSANDS for off the shelf parts and all Im missing is the "hub assembly" like what you have! Maybe one day ill find the hubs..
Love the channel, been subbed since ya showed up on the tube! Stay safe, and stay warm up there!
Thank you for a great video, I live in South Africa, & own a Recaro edition transam & always wanted to do a brake upgrade. My car has 15" wheels, will this conversion work on it?
Great video on this conversation! Do you mind sharing the stud length you used. In the video you don’t mention it. Trying to get once with them on already to fit my GTA wheels.
Hey Matt love the videos would love the specs on those hubs.
I turned down a set of factory hubs(cut off the rotor) and pressed in longer studs and used C5 brakes with slip on rotors on my early 2gen Camaro. So 3rd gen stuff will work.
I believe that’s what big brake upgrade does for their steel brake hubs.
There was also the 88-92 1LE Camaro dual piston setup that was much better than the stock single setup. Just a little cheaper way to go if not racing or anything.
Other than the wheel size, what are your thoughts on the 4th gen LS1 brake vs the CTS V brake, is the CTS V worth the extra?
Just got mine putting them on my 86 iroc z
Packing a bearing with your hands is better change my mind😂
Did installing these affect what your wheel offsets should be or did you manage to keep them the same as stock?
Nice upgrade Matt. Love the Trans Am and those brakes are going to be awesome while driving.
Hi Matt. I’m in the middle of a 86 IROC project. I’m really getting a lot from all your videos. Thanks for doing these video’s I know how much work is involved with producing them.
Question for you: I’d like to upgrade my brakes during the LS swap. Any suggestions for doing this when I’d like to keep my original 15” wheels? Same or different parts? Thanks
I think I are incorrect on preload on the bearings. I have done these kinds of bearings 1000 times I always leave a little free play. Get them tight then back it off and finger tighten them to the hole that has no preload.
Hello first of all a good job & video👍 , I ask, you would help me a lot about the dimensions and hole spacing of the conversion bracket ! greetings from Germany. 🙋♂️
I like your 3rd gen videos. Does this push the wheel mounting surface out by the thickness of the new caliper?
Why didn't you go with braided stainless steel brake hoses? I have them on my '89 Camaro and they really increased brake pedal feel and stopping power.
since you cut off the steering stops, aren't you rubbing the the tires inside of the fenders? What makes the steering stop now?
Hey lsxmatt great video. Do you Ever think about swapping your trans am engine for a Corvette l98 350 ? ..
If you order the conversion brackets does it only come with one or does it come with the pair ???
Curious can you run the same setup for the rear or would it have to be different
What parts store did you get those rotors from those look much better than those cross drilled ones.
Lov it
Hey how r u. I have a 1989 20th anniversary transam and I want to put the 4 piston brembo calipers off a ctsv Hawks motor sports makes a 17 x9 snow flake rim like the stock 16 x 9 snowflake. Will they work with the 17 inch rim.
What kind of front struts r those there yellow so they look like Bilstein to me but Bilstein doesn't list any on their website or they may be Koni yellows? 89 and up 3rd gen f bodies rear discs were an option. they're bigger I think 11 plus inches and had aluminum PBR calipers. that might be easier than an LS1 upgrade and I don't think you'd be missing any performance
When r u going 2 fix the damage on the passenger fender?
Can you run the 15x7s with the upgrades ??? I know you upgraded the wheels but I wasn't sure if I wanted bigger wheels.
This is awesome. Any idea if I can do this to my 77 Camaro? I would like to to 98-02 Camaro front and rear brakes. I know it’s pretty easy to do the rear.
You can make your own hubs by taking your original rotor/hub and machining off the rotor part, then use a slide on rotor like the 1LE rotors for the 88 up f bodies.
Nice job how about 4th gen master and brake booster? Then try out the 19lb and 22lb spring on proportioning valve for us DIY guys just to see how good it works? Oh and my irocs brakes suck I disagree there not even good for daily driving after all it's a PERFORMANCE car and should have better brakes than average. Keep up the good work
6:36 where did you get your 16 inch replacement tires from?
Do you plan on keeping it that color? I'd love to see you go full 80's as far as a colorway.
A freakin plus video.
Hey Matt do you think the stock 15x7s will clear?
Did you ever get to LS rear brake conversion?
hey Matt does the Trans AM have disc or drum brakes in the rear????
What kind of disc brakes did u use on the rear ????
First time hearing someone say "Hoo-awk" made me laugh a bit 😅 I'm from Texas lol
What type of rotors you use for adaptation??
19:04 The cars passing are decades younger and quantum leaps more efficient yet not one of them has any character even remotely matching the Trans Am.
Mint
I was adding up the parts. This is about $950-$1k after taxes?
How's your work on KITT? I mean, on your Trans Am?
Push front wheels out 2 inches?
Are you gonna Restored the rams oen
How long is the wheel studs
Looking to do this with a GTA Trans Am. Do you know if the GTA wheels clear? I’ve heard some say you need a spacer.
Yes, you need a spacer. I used the factory rear spacer up front for mine.
We’re those the 2.0 long studs or the 2.5 Long?
was wondering the same thing.
Love this kit.. Were building a 87 ta ls drag car. But one things when u set the bearing preload. And it is wrong. Wont debate that. A wheel bearing need "set" which means over tightening the bearing purposly to make sure they being the both races is completely bottomed out. Then set preload. Because those r going to be too loose after driving and the bearings wont last as long. Other than that super kick ass video. Wonderful job but i would reset the preload after driving. And i send ya 20 bucks if u honestly put the cotter pin in the same hole / part of the castle nut. Because 20 bucks says the next flat is now where u want the pin. 20 bucks? Prove me wrong 😆
Matt you should've told me. I have the tool to pack the bearings.
Do you have any idea if the 16in gta crosslace wheels will fit. All the old forums online are not helping.
They will require a thin spacer. Not sure how thick.
I wonder if the 15 inch wheels will clear those rotors? Great video.
Unfortunately they won't! This brake swap is the main reason I swapped my 15's out for 16's.
@@lsXmatt thank you for the info.
You should do a electric fan full install on your gmc
