I do all of this and also do some kicks (front, side, roundhouse). All to keep my cardio, coordination, strength and flexibility. I’m now 68. Can’t compete with the 20-30 year olds. He's a really good instructor on this stuff, help straighten out a few that are well beyond this type of video typically (not me among them, boxing is new to me and only did limited heavy bag before years break..). I'd consider myself a complete novice to heavy bag work, but do like to incorporate guard and 'my stance' I never thought to use footwork and never really learned it great to begin with. That was particularly helpful in this video. Well explained and quickly, but thoroughly exampled.
    I finally assembled a surprisingly nice heavy bag that I've had since Springtime in a box as a nice gift. My 5 year old asked me last weekend once and then got distracted, but this weekend he asked me if we could assemble it and that really helped motivate me and feel great. He was patient and wanted to help all he could. I got him a pair of more padded, smaller gloves (but the heavy bag is too...heavy for now because) I'm trying to teach him proper form first-- AT LEAST to keep his dang fist right and not let his wrist go limp and fist bend upward or downard like his attempts so far on my full sized heavy bag.
    So I got him a cool kid sized speed bag(? unsure the name). "I did" a couple martial arts for longer periods, Kempo, then Tae Kwon Do as a late teen. Loved nothing more than that Tae Kwon Do class, but it was due to an awesome mentor / man teaching our small group of rowdy teens. Also because he was as badass as a man who is as short as is his first name Leslie. Most badass man I may ever meet, near 20 years later, taught us very little Tae Kwon Do. His instructor was "our class" officially but Leslie was our's by proxy. He was himself only a brown belt, but proclaimed he didn't care about belts, he cared about the life stuff and teen / young men stuff he'd advise on, on us working out hard for halve the class then grueling drills of form and workout (often while beating us with that rubber banded bamboo "sword" or while we did "iron body" and took turns punching or kicking each other in specific muscles or bones mostly... shins, forearms... and pounding our knuckles into stuff to harden them... Annnd we never learned to tournament spar, but Leslie was also a red belt in Kung Fu (which I was surprised any existed around here) and brough other older construction guys from the close state over where he takes that, and I think we had a jiu jitsu guy come do lessons (I can't claim / be sure Leslie trained there too or his belt if so, but I'm sure he didn't care about belts...). But we did learn and spend a lot of time grappling and doing full contact sparring.
    I loved the shit out of that and that time of my life so long ago, learned a lot about myself and my friends and it was the first time I got into really good shape and very competitive, was the first sport I was really good at, the end of the nights when we'd all do our makeshift 'tournaments' of the full contact sparring and Leslie letting the sessions run late.
    I want to get my son interested or at least safe enough to be confident and not break his wrist if he ever hits anything for now haha. Sorry for rambling... got missing him and nostalgic on this stuff.

    In my opinion this is a highly underrated boxing channel. Bloody good tips here. As a total novice here who really enjoys the training & heavy cardio work out it gives, just throwing power punches on a true heavy bag will hurt your hands as well. I know that from experience. Great combination & move advice here. Many thanks. I'll be using these tonight at training.

      Nikhil Grave no disrespect to shane but the ufc is the best of the best and you can’t just join the ufc you first make a name for yourself in professional fighting (best choice is mma Bc obviously that’s what the ufc is). That gets the eyes on you and the buzz about you then Dana offers you a contract lol. I wish it was that easy to be in the ufc, but anyways my point is just because he is a good fighter doesn’t mean he can go into the ufc. You ever noticed that fighters in the ufc have something amazing about them? Whether it be wrestling, striking speed, power, combination fluidity, submissions, or just be extremely well rounded.That’s because they are very experienced top of the line fighters and that’s what Dana wants he takes people with a big following for money and people with superb martial arts abilities. If you think you can just waltz in the ufc you got another thing coming. Michael Bisping for example he was one of the most dominant mma artists in europe becoming champion of several belts and was undefeated in the uk. Once he came to the ufc his fucking world got rocked with all the belts he won and how many times he was champion it took him 12 years to win the ufc middleweight title and he got one defense then lost it.

    It's so funny that I've had to fight to survive growing up and thought I was a naturally, good fighter! But after watching this, I realized how sloppy and undisciplined I was!! I just didn't wait for my opponent's to throw. If it was going down, let's go!! I've also had my ass kicked. Now its only for fun, fitness and to show my Sons the correct way! They grew up in a completely different world then me, thank God!! Thanks Shane. love all your vids!!!!

      That training in isolation won't be "as" effective when you go to the boxing gym. I've trained solo for 3 months and once I went into boxing gym it was waaay different. I've watched people spar so I went up for my turn and Everytime they rushed me I went straight into a ball, so social interaction plays a key part.

    • @danielhiggins8798
      @danielhiggins8798 Před 5 lety +16

      @@chaysecourtney3701 Not toxic, just stating facts. I've had lots of kids tell me they want to train, but feel they aren't ready for the gym. They fool around at home for months, then show up months behind the kids who just showed up and learned. I'm not sure if you're running a competitive gym or strictly fitness oriented, but any competitive coach will advise people not to train unsupervised. It takes longer to fix bad habits than to train a totally green person.
