The Case of Kylr Yust

- Kylr Yust lived in Kansas City, and dated Kara Kopetsky. When she disappeared, all eyes were on Kylr. He would tell stories, lots of them, to lots of people about what happened. Nothing would be done, until he did it again, when he met Jessica Runions.

I have a daughter that is getting married for the 4th time. Nobody likes the guy. He's already cheated on her with his ex wife. We haven't spoke to her in 6 months. But, she has sent us an invitation to her wedding! She kick out a mentally disabled son and is living with us... we are done.....

This happened in my hometown of Belton, and it was infuriating because we all knew Yust did it but the police did absolutely nothing. So, I am from the Kansas City area and lived in Belton as a child. When Kara went missing in 07, I was getting ready to leave for Army Basic training. I was in the Army until 2013, when I moved back to the area. In late 2014 I bought a house in Cleveland, Missouri (rural Cass County). Kara and Jessica’s remains were found not far from where we lived. The search was massive and I remember it like it was yesterday. I had never heard the story laid out like this, great work.
I live in Kansas City, MO and this case was all over the news until the following month of June 2007. A young woman named Kelsey Smith was abducted from a local Target and soon found murdered. She was the daughter of a police officer and her case took over the local news and Kara was almost forgotten - even after Kelsey's case was solved within a few weeks.

And there were 6 of them. I get that you might not perhaps believe one of them. I get that someone might confess to someone they think want to here it (See the Rachel Nickell murder), but 6 seems like half a jury to me!
But without physical evidence as well it might not get a conviction. At least they shot have followed him.
But it could be that he confessed to show off to his girlfriend the defence will use anything to let him get away with murder.
How did they not search the field for her body. They said it was the same field that he had shown her.

Thank you for telling this story. I live in the Kansas City metro area on the Kansas side, and there was another abduction/murder that happened around the same time as Kara's in another town nearby. Because of (in my opinion) mainly socioeconomic differences, the two cases were handled very, very differently; on the Kansas side, the victim and the murderer were found within 2 weeks. Anyway, my point is, a lot of people don't talk about Kara Kopetsky without comparing it to this other case as well, and they aren't objectively very similar so I don't think doing so serves either woman's memory. So just, thanks for telling this story on its own.
This tho 90 % of the time they are mentioned together. scream this from the roofs I grew up 10 min from where that particular case happened, the 2 cases literally have like 3 things in common the fact they were both pretty both the same age an they went missin around the same time that's it. @@christopherbertoli7322 facts. Belton Police are seriously a joke. Along with Raymore. They literally have tried everything in their power to lock me up knowing I have commented about them mishandling this case. They disrespect everything law enforcement stands for.
I understand the sentiment but in reality it isn't so simple. The fact that there was no physical evidence, and at the time, not even a body- that speaks volumes for the decisions that the Belton law enforcement made. You want to be sure before trying to arrest and convict a person on such an important case. Could they have taken the witnesses' accusations more seriously? Absolutely. Should they have, legally speaking? I'm not so sure. You have people who falsely claim to be responsible for a number of atrocities, and I'm sure, have many more who claim someone they know has claimed that responsibility. No body, no proof- just heresay. I think ppl should give a bit more slack to the police involved is my point. They're playing chess, not checkers, and hindsight is 20/20.
@@richt7525 do you possibly think that the fact the FBI flew somebody in, in 2011 to wear a wire on Yust and got a statement used to file the charges was proof? There are tons of case tried and convicted without a body. Especially cold cases.
@@adamsilkwood4850 In each of those I'm sure there was something tangible, however small. Most of the time, (sadly not always) convictions are secured by removing reasonable doubt from the jury. This guy had that in spades- all he had were, at the time, words. Even when admitting to a crime you have to display some strong af inside knowledge or back up something they already have on the case. I think their hands were tied tbh. Sad but true.
So it’d be the individual officers fault? not the investigators or prosecutors whose job it is to put evidence to use? You prolly tweeted ACAB last summer, this is why you don’t get to decide who gets fired.

At the very least, at two separate people coming forward was enough to look into it further. Plus he is a convicted animal abuser? Hello! Serial killer 101. Those guys should be forced to give up their pensions to the mothers of the young ladies who were murdered.
And a recording of an admission.
The old "I didn't do it either time, they just happened to disappear directly after leaving with me and I guess I must have dumped them at my brother's house and while I was pooping he murdered them and I just figured they left on foot, possibly after setting their own cars on fire." defense.
Hope Kara's parents sue the police department! Shocking police work (or lack of)
Here from KC. Thanks for covering this. It haunts a lot of us…
Mike I LOVE the way you do your videos. I also really like reading the comments of your viewers, they are funny sarcastic, empathetic, and brilliant. Keep up the good work everyone!!
Absolute monster. Just awful he was basically allowed to kill again 😭
The police should be sued for that.
The only benefit of the doubt I would give them if his friends and ex were as untrustworthy as his brother as witnesses.
You can point a finger right at the cops on that one. I can't believe they did that. WTF? How they sleep at night knowing that another young woman had to die before they got off their fat asses is so disgusting.
@@robertm3951 - Well they did give the cops a jump off point. Kara was in the woods. So bring in cadaver dogs, and start working thru the surrounding woods.
They also have her restraining order, and his killing of cats.
The cops should have went balls to the wall in getting this guy behind bars!
Jessica didn't have to die.
Kylr was rightfully released, he is innocent, not sure why everyone hates him so much
Remember, it's not what you think or hear happened. It's what you can prove happened without a doubt in court.

"what happened to YOUR face?"
i was really hoping for something like, "sick burn bro" from the reporter.
That would have been fuckin hysterical.
Should have said I'm asking about yours and not the burn.

I can’t believe the cops let the lead witness die in jail on top of everything else. He helped turn in a murderer and they didn’t cut him a deal in his arson charges to keep him alive. Disgusting. This whole police force is terrible
His parents didn't know what to call him, so they grabbed a handful of letters from a bag of Scrabble tiles.
What a slap in the face to Jessica’s family! There’s no way her murder was second degree. He deliberately put her body near Kara’s
What does where he put the body have to do with it? First degree means a murder was pre-planned. For example, if a killer brought a knife and tape and waited in the dark to ambush their victim. Second degree is for spontaneous crimes. From the information we got from the video, this seems like one of those. He saw an opportunity to feed his sick desires and he took it. I agree that he should have gotten a worse sentence (at least life in prison without the possibility of parole), and personally, I don't understand why second-degree murders have a lesser sentence to begin with, just because someone murders another person on an impulse rather than planning it that doesn't make the victim any less dead, but that's beside the point. From the video, there doesn't seem to be any evidence that he went to the party with the intent to kill Jessica, therefor the murder was second-degree.
I thought it was more a slap in the face that he only got charged with manslaughter for Kara... I mean wtf
If someone served only15 years for killing my daughter, I would be waiting in the parking lot the day he was released. He'd wish he was back in prison.
@@chesterwilberforce9832 word.
@@CLBellamey I agree. I’ve been following this case since Kara went missing. The reason he was charged with manslaughter was most likely because of credibility issues with some of those he confessed to. And although everyone knew he did it since day one, there was no forensic proof. Therefore, the manslaughter charge would be easier to attain than a 2nd or 3rd degree murder, rather get something than nothing. But they also knew they had him dead to rights on Jessica’s death. I’m sure Karas family was filled in on that and had some say. Prosecutors usually do get input from a victim’s family.
I will NEVER understand why the recordings that Katelynn got while wired was not enough for an arrest... Kylr admitted to it repeatedly...
Cuz there's reasonable doubt he could just be trying to sound cool or mess with her
She risked her life
@@MA__ Except the tapes facilitate probable cause to bring him in for questioning. Under good interrogation, even the worst narcissists break down somehow.

The police generally don't seem to like doing their jobs.
I think anyone who harms fur babies and children which includes teens, should go straight to a woodchipper over looking a alligator pond. They would go up on a conveyer belt feet first on slow mode. Once they are found guilty of course.
The way Mike's jumps on these cases so fast, it's like "another jury returned a guilty verdict this morning, let's give it a goo"
It's sad that Cara's life was taken so early but had the cops locked him up Jessica wouldn't have met that monster.

The jury deliberated for two days. A day of which was spent laughing that he pissed himself and the other day spent shaking their heads and muttering that he hadn't been arrested, charged and tried 14 years earlier.

The investigating officers really did a great job on this... Real police work waiting until the case "gets better" by waiting until he kills another poor girl. Sickening....
Just goes to show, if willing to do such a horrendous act, they'll do it again if ever given the chance. Eye for an eye!
I live in Belton. The worst part of this case is that EVERYBODY knew he killed Kara. Not one person had any doubt. He confessed, had no alibi, and violated the PPO. He was able to kill 2 women before the Belton Police decided to maybe do something about it. The most heartbreaking part of this story, in my opinion, is that Kara's mom paid her cellphone bill the whole time she was missing in case she would ever call. She never called.
Mho I feel like every one in around the area who knew about the case knew there was something about Kylr that screamed killer
Agreed. It was all over cass county. All over the place on 58 highway. Seemingly every bumper.
If there’s one good thing to come of this is seeing the entire community come together.
