Walking Around Shukunegi Village on Sado Island(Niigata, Japan)

Shukunegi is the name of the town at the southernmost tip of Sado City, Niigata Prefecture. It is a port town that developed as a port of kitamae-bune (cargo ships that sailed the Japan Sea during the Edo period) . This town reached its heyday from the late Edo period to the early Meiji period. In 2017, the rows of houses in Shukunegi are designated as a National Important Preservation Area for Traditional Buildings and Architecture.

Cloudy sky, fading paint, rusty metal and mossy waterways. This place look so humble, so gloomy yet so beautiful. The music is also a perfect fit to bring out the atmosphere.
Thank you very much😊
You ruined the ryhme on the last part :(
Nice transitions though :)
Appropriately enough, Sado had historically been used as a dumping ground for political exiles.
well said!
Took the words out of my mouth
This looks like a place Studio Ghibli would use as a reference for the backdrop to a magical but slightly melancholic world
It made me think of Letter to Momo's settings...
it made me think of howls castle
@@SethOmegaful Architecture in Howls castle is based off of European architecture tho, since the story is in Europe. UK more specifically.
It reminded me of the house boats in Sausalito, all the wood I expect.
It’s very beautiful but I think it would become oppressive. But I’m from Canada - lots of sky!
When you see a millennial year village, with houses and original structures more then hundred year old... that CLEAN!. Guts, pathways, grass, the small creek... All clean, perfectly maintained. You can almost smell the watery rocky green vegetation of the place.
What a place. This village buildings must remain untouched by modern architecture. Feels like living history.
It has electricity and probably inside one of those houses there's a kid watching anime and gaming
@@_idiot what he meant was the infrastructure of the village, the house should stay the same, the same goes for everything else. Hes right, it really does seem like its not from the present.
You missed the satellite dishes, electrical and telephone lines on the homes, lolz
@@RWZiggy The houses and foundations are old. Of course who lives there deserve a little luxury of the modern world. My wish was to keep the original structures intact. Dont care if it has A/C or not.
Damn guys, you missed grammar classes?
@@xarups Those are modern glass windows too, the homes didn't have those 200 years ago.

This town is beautiful, cozy and creepy altogether. Love it.
Beautiful. Japanese are so good at creating harmony between man-made buildings and the surrounding nature.
Ever been in Japan? Let’s say that it’s fortunate that many places have been spared the wild speculation of the bubble economy in the 80s.
@@gozzilla78 yes, I lived in Japan 31 years ago, teaching English.
I don't see how this is more harmonious than old medieval European buildings
@@randompanda3415 you’re being argumentative when I was merely making an observation without comparisons.
@@Dutch2go there is this weird trend of people being aggressive of others liking Japan, I have noticed the same thing. But to talk about the topic Japan has an incredibly high rate of forests and nature. Japan is an amazing mix of both the most urbanized and total nature. It has to do with the Japanese culture, language, people, and a polarity. The controlled vs. The uncontrolled. A yin and yang that transcends every aspect of japan.
If you ever make your way to Enoshima, you’ll see this. Half the island is busy, bustling, commerce, everything full of energy. The side that’s facing the ocean, is slow, quiet, dead, it’s low on energy, and at the center of the island, is the dragon shrine. It’s the center of the energy that the island possesses. There is a saying that the reason one side is busier than the other is due to the distribution of these Polar energies.
It’s easy to hate something you don’t understand, speaking japanese has helped me understand, but also appreciate all the other cultures much more. I can see the details in how people express, how different cultures and themes interact and it’s very beautiful.
I feel I lived here in my previous life.
me too, I was a rich noble man! :)
I was raped and executed for medieval witchcraft and I’m here to haunt CZcams comment

I've dreamt of this place, not humans but animals and mystical creatures live here!

I was thinking ...hope they have a good fire department.
I was thinking the same thing. But If you look closely now every house has a Fire Hydrant attached to it (those red boxes with Kanji written)

This place is the spirit of old times. It is so stunning that my spirit is trembling of its beauty. It is like i'm almost see those missing people walking in kimono and trading on those streets, masters crafting and townsfolks buying.
Those places should be conserved as the most precious places of Japan, to be remembered forever.
absolutely agree with you!
The fact that this video is 9 minutes long yet no any human beings were caught on the street, such a beautiful and melancholic village.
There is one at 8:47
To imagine Japanese people from ages ago, their clothes and music and sake and their dialect and stories and everything.
Gosh, Niigata is such a hidden gem of Japan. I am thoroughly amazed and stunned with such beauty.

wabi sabi:
the appreciation of the natural transition from perfectly new into decay.
As a western man who loves mildewed ruins of european castles, old thatched roof cottages, and rusted swords, this video speaks to me on a wonderful level. Japan basically just covers some of their houses in Garden Trellis fixtures and I'm ok with that.
09:04 ,That man just stand there with the umbrella, quietly.
This video somehow gave me:

Anna
A village that beautiful deserves to be preserved forever.
one of the things that make me admire Japan, the water flowing in the ditches and rivers is always clear. 😊👍

You have no Idea about how many times I have watched this particular video.
The music is a big part of that but the visuals are also calming and serene.

Haven't heard of this village but now it's on my most wanted list!

This town I feel symbolizes both life and death so beautifully
The houses looks drab but as the path opens up to a lovely patch of garden space the exteriors of the rusted brown houses contrasts and simultaneously accentuates the breath of fresh air that these tiny green spaces provides
Ugly and extremely lovely,
cramped and free,
stagnant and mysteriously magical
walking around here while it's raining and foggy would be pure bliss...
The lack of people in this makes it feel eerie yet incredibly alluring. Beautiful.

This place looks like renaissance festival, like the buildings are all just a face with nothing inside. It looks to perfect to be real.

Thank you for sharing your talent for showcasing the serene beauty and peacefulness of the many places in Japan that tourists may never see. I have visited once 2 years ago and was planning to return next year, until the pandemic. I hope to one day soon return. Please continue to produce these amazing videos! Thank you!
You are very welcome😉
The Japanese do have a awe inspiring old majestic way of building their buildings with a ray of light and nature feel on the onset of some beautiful gardens that the modern world just drowns out in its dreary future. Anime captures this well, and you managed to do it well too, I like how steady the camera was used while taking the shots...
The soundtrack of this video is absolutely precious. The soul flies into the spaces of the breath of the nature ...
This place provoke in me a sad feeling. So old houses....
What a contrast with Mitarai last week! Here we have a wild, rocky coast with a village composed of substantial, forbidding-looking buildings. Mitarai charmed, Shukunegi impresses. What also impresses is how Anna can dart from one port to another across most of the country. Private helicopter perhaps?!
Thank you for always watching my video😊
I appreciate your kind words. I took an airplane from Osaka to Niigata Airport. I was surprised that the price of the plane was cheaper than that of the Shinkansen.
not one piece of trash, wish everywhere was clean like this.

This place makes me feel comfortable
I eould love to live here, the atmosphere remind me of my old home which got demolishe for city development. I dont know why but even the smell which i vividly remember went strong when i eatchrd this
Another Beauty Anna, your music selection for this upload was spot on. Really conveyed the mode of the video. Thank you as always for sharing Japan with us! Stay safe.

I still in an awe with the landscape. It amazes me of the feeling of a maze they radiates. It feels like you're in a maze and should escape out of it immediately. But you can't. The distractions is too beautiful and out of hands. The townscape is the distractions.
Also it feels like i'm living in the old days of japan with the brown-ish tone of the city and not much of technology.
Thank you for always watching my video😊
I walked those same alleyways in 2007 the afternoon following the Choetsu earthquake earlier in the day, and a strong aftershock shook just as I was chatting to an elderly woman who lived in the village. All those wooden buildings clapped loudly, and I sprang into action, ready to bolt into the nearby forest. Granny wasn't fazed by the earthquake, but my reaction generated a great belly laugh out of her. Great memories of that trip, though the earthquake (and aftershocks) this New Englander could have done without.

I'm from an area of the USA called the Puget Sound. It's climate and geography is very similar to this. It feels like an alternate universe version of my home and brings me a sweet melancholy. Beautiful video thank you.

There is something about such an old, calm and lonely little village that makes it so much beautiful.
The rain falling on the wood giving off a wet smell and the moss and rocks joining together.
The stillness and calmness of the place yet the intricate way the buildings were made so close and intimate.
The nature taking over the paths. It's incredible
Lost in time for 10 minutes. Nice music.

Beautiful video, and great music choice. It feels soothing, but also eery. Maybe it's the lack of people. I wonder how many of these houses are actually still inhabited.

The former prosperous strength and the present dreary abandoned scene.
These landscapes somehow makes me weep.
SO CLEAN
It was a wonderful video. In particular, the house on the three-way junction, which was first reflected at 00:10, is introduced as a characteristic historical wooden structure in an architectural magazine. If you look closely, it looks like a ship, and the bow of the ship is expressed. The bidirectional wall that touches the three-way junction is a quadratic curve. Japan has historically been an ethnic group that crosses the ocean. The Jomon tribe, which is the basis of the racial composition of Japan, traveled endlessly across the archipelago of Japan, and its inhabited area extended to Taiwan Island. After that, the Yayoi tribe (Miao tribe) arrived after escaping the Chinese turmoil about 2500 years ago. They are also half fishermen and half peasants who built the Yangtze civilization. Therefore, "woodworking technology in Japanese historical archeology" is said to be superior to "wooden building technology" in "wooden shipbuilding technology". The "ship-shaped wooden house" (marked by the sign "「塩」") on the three-way junction introduced this time shows the history of woodworking technology. And this wooden house becomes a "prominent topic among Japanese architectural designers" as a traditional Japanese house. To explain this wooden house in a little more detail, a pure classic wooden building is made by the frame construction method. Wooden ships are built with a globally common shell structure. However, the wooden house built on this three-way junction is one of the few valuable buildings where the frame construction method and the shell construction method are mixed.
I learn a lot from you. Thank you very much😊
But the video is only 9:41
@@Rohan-wq9yv Thank you for pointing out. It's a 10 second mistake. I have corrected it.
