Whenever I see this movie title in print, it always takes me back to that year (1958) when it was released. If I'm not mistaken, it was in the Spring of that year. Three of my five sisters & I went to see it...I think on an Easter Sunday afternoon.
The music is with that Elmer Bernstein style he became famous for in many of his scoring. And, those main actors were putting their ability in a lot of good pictures...especially, Charlton Heston.
I like this score.

My only disappointment was that the Black Watch Regt. playing "Highland Laddie" was not included.
I loved that scene as a kid.
One of my favorite films and Score by Elmer Bernstein. I still have the record album which I bought when the movie first came out in 1958 and also a CD of the score recently bought. I was born in New Orleans on January 8th the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans. It's one of my favorite movies and soundtracks. Me and my older brother Gregory used to watch it every year on the anniversary of the battle. Saw it first as a small child not long after it came out. BTW, I love Heston's Andrew Jackson.
I'm also from New Orleans I can remember watching this movie late nite on t.v.,when my parents and brothers,sister went to bed. This was 1973 or 74 that's when new oleans was showing really good Hollywood movies between 10:30 and 12 midnight. I really miss those years.
"the ten commandments"was cecil b.de mille's last personally directed film,but"the buccaneer"was his last personally produced film,with him as executive producer and actors henry wilcoxon and anthony quinn as producer and director and it was a great,typically de mille epic of the war of 1812 with yul brynner as a romantic,swashbuckling jean lafitte and charlton heston giving a rousing portrayal of future president andrew jackson.also,elmer bernstein's score added to the picture's magnificence!

What can I say about Elmer Bernstein other than he was a genius

The music starting at 1:30 was reused, by Bernstein, in his score for "Animal House". It was near the end of the movie were Belushi does a pirate swing over the parade.

The 5th track, Vulcan Music Box, reminds me of another song and it's driving me mad trying to remember the song.
Kurt Graunke's superlative, often uncredited, orchestra is noted for their performance of several important film scores. The recordings also featured excellent engineering.
The orchestra today is named the Munich Symphony.It is quite a wonder an underpaid and much looked over orchestra was and is this brilliant! Graunke too was a fine composer.
The sound is terrific for 1958. Amazing. I recall the Graunke Symphony also did the El Cid soundtrack album.

This movie was Cecil B. de Mille's last film. It has a couple of distinctions. It was directed by Anthony Quinn who was then de Mille's son in law. And it is the only film in which Yul Brynner had hair.
Pat Nolan Actually, he had hair as King Solomon in Solomon and Sheba, for a quarter of Taras Bulba when the Poles forbid the chupryet scalplock of the cossacks, and in 12 Angry Men (stage version).

The thematic spirit and orchestration of “The Ten Commandments “ is often lurking in this score; to good advantage.

I had seen The Bucaneers in 90s on AMC but I found it dull unfortunately because DeMille was not directing it since his near fatal heart attack during the filming of The Ten Commandments made his health weak. I didn't remember the score but it's very rousing
"Elmer’s Virginia Reel" beginning at (6:30) is lovely.
Rousing typical Elmer Bernstein bombastic score on DeMille's slow remake of his 1937 actioner..
Unfortunately DeMille was too weak from his heart attack during the filming of The Ten Commandments that he didn't have enough strength to direct this film. That's why he asked his son-in-law Anthony Quinn to direct it. I found the film boring because Quinn didn't have experience directing. It's unfortunate because if DeMille had been in good health, this would've been a great picture.
