  • Traditional Malva Pudding - this delicious sweet and sticky pudding is very easy to make. Malva pudding is one of my favorite South African desserts best served with custard.

    What you'll need:
    1 cup sugar
    1 large egg
    2 tbsp butter
    1 tsp vanilla essence
    1 tbsp apricot jam
    1 cup self-raising flour
    pinch salt
    1 tsp bicarbonate soda
    1 tbsp vinegar
    1 cup milk
    Method:
    1. In a large bowl beat the sugar and egg, beat until creamy. Mix in vanilla essence.
    2. Beat in melted butter and jam.
    3. Sift flour and salt into the wet mixture and mix until well combined.
    4. While mixing, slowly add milk.
5.. In a small bowl, add bicarb and vinegar, now add to the batter and mix with a spatula.
    6. Pour batter into a well greased ovenproof dish.
    7. Bake at 190°C for 35 mins until the top is nicely browned.
    For the sauce:
Melt all the butter and sugar together in a small pot over a medium heat, add milk and let boil, now pour over the pudding before serving, preferably while it’s still hot.

Malva Puuuuuuuuuud!!!! So homesick now! Surprising my son with his favourite SA'can pudding tonight! COOL music! There's no self-raising flour here in Vienna, so I'll just add baking powder to plain flower. That should work, right?

      Hi Lindo
When you're baking, butter beats margarine every time, but because butter is so expensive I personally love using Stork Baking margarine, it's never let me down.
If you're looking for a cheaper option, get yourself Woodenspoon Bake margarine , it's about R17.00

Thanks for sharing, easy video to follow as well, love the listing and measurements of ingredients. Just not sure of tablespoon as it looks like dessert spoon? I could be wrong?

NEVER use margarine in anyway or form, it is a by product artificially coloured and flavoured, it should be banned from the shelves
