    Amidst the tensions of the Cold War, the Soviets sought to bolster their air defenses against NATO's low-level strike aircraft and menacing cruise missiles. Thus, they set out to develop a formidable aircraft: the MiG-31. As it came to be called in the West, the Foxhound-A excelled in high-altitude interception at incredible speeds, proving a worthy successor to the renowned MiG-25 interceptor.
    The MiG-31 Foxhound-A would play a vital role in Soviet air defenses. Its unmatched speed, altitude, and climb capabilities, combined with the groundbreaking Zaslon radar, ensured its success in countering high-flying threats.
    Continuous upgrades and adaptations have further enhanced the MiG-31's operational effectiveness well into the 2020s, guaranteeing its prominence for years to come in the modern-day battlefield…

    Its hard to believe just how massive this plane is but it the same length as a B-17 ! Obviously the wing is significantly smaller due to its engines and role but it is taller than the B17. The B-17 did put a crew of ten in the area where the Mig-31 had a crew of 2 and ginormous turbofans. Just huge!

    Over a decade ago I queried an F-15 pilot as to what fighter most worried him. I figured that would've been an easy and quick answer - the Flanker. I was wrong. That pilot answered "The MIg-31, Foxhound". F-15 pilots respect the Flanker, but we've had Flankers in the Foreign Military Exploitation program for a loooong time, and had the opportunity to mock fight them for years. He was very concerned about the Mig-31's supersonic legs, ability to detect/engage him from great distances and especially engage/dis-engage at will. The F-15EX paired with AIM-260 or possibly even AIM-120D should negate these advantages, but still. Beast of an aircraft...

      @@herrdoctorsloth9801oh no you are very wrong , I happen to know they were took down , and indeed only damaged the Patriot. Btw, your note of MACH 4, that wouldn't make it Hypersonic , that's the speed of most Air to Air so would be easily intercepted if so. MACH 5+ is Hypersonic. Also all MERVs are hypersonic, always have been for decades. The kinzhal is fast , not indestructible or invisible , actually it's more visible due to the speed, but gives less time for target lock due to the speed again. Also it's not very manoeuvrable for the same reason unlike stealthier slower missiles. Being pro Russian doesn't make fantasies any more true , same as it doesn't make any less ships sank by a country with no Navy. Fact is, there is a stalemate pretty much in Ukraine, Russia using the usual bigger the fist overwhelm with troops methodology they always use n losing many men, Ukraine using the less men and stealthy method. Russia started the war outside Kiev and ended up pushed to where they now are , Ukraine's making little progress as is same for Russia.. Also Ukraine usually quotes shit 12 of 17 drones down as an Example , Russia claims usually to have shot down all drones or missiles and blame fires or explosions on electrical faults, careless smoking etc or including the Stormshadows that took out the sub/ship/base etc

      Size can be misleading, all aircraft of modern era are quite fragile, especially their jet engines. So you don't have to destroy a plane as big as the MiG-31 to mission kill it. But at the same time any damage to a MiG-31 flight system (control surfaces cables/hydraulics) could make it unstable and prone to catastrophic failure (ie break apart) under a moderate G load.

    I wonder if THIS is the Jet the movie FoxFire with Clint Eastwood was made? It takes 'years' to design and build a new high-tech Jet. The movie was made in 1977 and this Jet came out 4 years later in 1981. Did the U.S. get wind of it? (of course, they did) and then did someone leak it to Hollywood? I say YES.

      The AN/APG-63 and AN/APG-70 are a family of all-weather multimode radar systems designed by Hughes Aircraft (later Raytheon) for the F-15 Eagle air superiority fighter. APG-63 was mounted on a gimbal, with the beam being directed mechanically. The Zaslon was fixed in place, with the beam being directed electronically (which is what the 'E' in PESA/AESA refers to).
      That isn't a comment on which is better, but that's what's meant by the 'first of its type to be fitted to a jet' claim. Emerson and Raytheon did both submit proposals for PESA radars for the F-15 in the late 60s, but neither design was chosen for whatever reason.

      I think you misunderstand the concept of interception. The Mig 31 would not run from behind the SR-71 but the interception would be coming from the front so it does not necessarily have to be faster than the target, if it must fly higher. In this way, with a limited number of interceptors you could prevent penetration into your territory.

    • @robhaywood6783
      @robhaywood6783 Před 8 měsíci

      @@juanalejandrosegura5857 no I totally understand interception. the Mig would still have to be very lucky to intercept something that can fly more than 300 mph faster and yea sure it would make the odds better if there were multiple migs but to scramble them once detecting the SR again the migs would have to be lucky. the SR 71 regularly flew the same paths so they were predictable why I have no idea that was pretty stupid. its said that mig 31s have intercepted the 71 and were able to get lock well I take everything said by Russians with a grain of salt. but my point is they are trying to make this jet look as if so let me ask if it was so capable of intercepting the SR how come it never shot one down. there were plenty of times they were in the air at the same time.

For that reason, they will never be as good as the F-15 Eagle which was designed from the start as an air superiority fighter capable of flying above Mach 2.5, and out maneuvering virtually any other fighter it encounters. Having said that, the Migs are just fast, straight line interceptors not capable of much of anything else.
