- The head of the African Union is urging Russia to renew the deal which allowed Ukraine to safely export grain to Africa.
AU chair and Comoros President Azali Assoumani spoke during the final day of the Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg.
He also called for a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Al Jazeera’s Ali Hashem reports from St Petersburg, Russia.

It's Simple here. The west had influence everywhere. So Putin knows that's if them (the Russians) and Chinese help Africa to become independent, they'll weaken the west. No one will have to do anything under any conditions. So Africans also don't have a choice because most of the countries for example Zimbabwe have been under western sunctions for over 20 years now, it has been hindering fast development. So it makes sense to ally with your enemy's enemy. If there's a catch, Africa would rather Russia and China be their brothers than the west.
And to answer your question on food, they can't feed Africa for long that's why their putting in place programs to ensure increased production of food. Zimbabwe is already food secure and it's food production is growing once again at an exponential rate that soon it will be the bread basket of Africa once again. Moreover it is not the only country that can replace all that grain within Africa. This alliance will boost trade which will shift the power dynamics in the world so food has to be secured for everyone for it to work. I'm Zimbabwean that's why I am giving examples about it
