Washington Island - Lake Michigan

- We continue visiting Great Lakes islands and in this episode, we visit the Isle of Icelanders.
We venture out to Washington Island, just off the Door Peninsula in Door County, Wisconsin. Washington Island is settled by many nationalities, but Icelanders made it home and the second oldest Icelandic settlement in the United States.
We started by taking the Washington Island Ferry across Death's Door, camp on the island, visit the Stavkirke (Stave Church), Lookout Mountain, School House Beach, the Farm Museum, Lavender Farm and a few of the islanders.

This was so sweet to watch! It made me tear up a bit. My family were among the first Danes to come to the island. I so wish the Jacobsen museum could have been open, you both would have loved it, I bet. My great great grandpa owned a saw mill in the property that is kitty corner to the historic island dairy. And my nana and papa owned a bakery in the building across from the Alby. It is such a special place! Thank you for sharing your experience!

Seeing how there are currently just under 380,000 Icelanders on Iceland, it’s surprising to run into an Icelandic settlement. I’ve lived nearly 65 years and I’ve only run into two Icelanders. But then I’ve never traveled to Iceland.

Love Washington Island 59 year's going! Knowing most local islander's, too bad you didn't come with boat, shipwreck off school house beach! Rock island probably closed due to covid, but worth the visit and boat house, the out islands too NE Michigan territory fun visiting,

But K.K. FISKES down from middle bar owner Capt. Kenny could of shared much more island history being the last commercial non stop fishing vessel on Island! And a avid recycling expert of used stuff!
Rock was closed due to Covid. We have plans to bring the zodiac, hopefully this year.
We have a Walker Bay tender/ dingy and every single weekend depending on the weather / winds we will run the mighty Mississippi , Lake Michigan, or the inner river's locks and dams! Just depends on wear the winds blow! The out islands of door county & Michigan are on a calendar this year weather permitting! Great videos by the way!

Moved to the states in 97 and living across the lake from you in Manitowoc County.
What part? My family is from the Ólafsfjörður area. Well, a few farms to the south.
And you probably have some Leif bloodline too! LOL. I think everyone from there does.

My father's family is from there and mother's side is from Neskaupstaður.
And yes. I can trace my father's side to Leifur Eiríksson.
