  • Poppins and I explore Michigan's latest state park - Lime Island State Park.
    ➡️ We have always been fascinated by Michigan's history, and really couldn't pass up the opportunity to explore this island.
    The Islands' documented history as an inhabited island dates back 6000 years.
    ➡️ There was a native burial ground hunting ground, and a lacrosse stadium for ambition, it provided material to build Fort St. Joseph, and was the Kemp family farm for 40 years, from 1890 to 19 tenant coasting to St Mary's resort where Mae West recorded to Upstate. 🗺️
    In the 20th century it was a maritime fuel station with 1000s of steamers and light graders from around the world stopped to repeat.
    ➡️ Now modern ships carry all the fuel they need and lime Island was sold as an excess state of Michigan 1984.
    There are also lime kilns left behind from industry that were once prevalent here before we moved on to more modern ways of living nowadays.
    The cabins have been wonderfully restored so visitors can stay overnight if they want while hiking through this beautiful land filled with trails connecting them back up again!
    The Department of Natural Resources has plans to expand Lime Island. But, it remains one of the most difficult parks to reach in the system as it requires a boat to access.
    It is a fascinating place to stay and explore. 🥾
    💬 Have you visited Lime Island before? If so, was it fun? What places have you explored?

    My family lived on Lime Island for a while. My Father worked there fueling the freighters from 1960 till its closing in 1980. It could not accommodate the 1,000 foot freighters and became obsolete. The mulberry bush was in the front yard of the house we lived in for a while.

    Love the exploration you two are involved in. You showed the Common Tern and that reminds me of a man that went fishing from the bank of the St Mary’s . He was bothered greatly by the Terns. They would steal the bait the man had with every cast. He got very angry and picked up stones and threw them at the Terns. One might say he never left a Tern unstoned. 😅

    Went there in the late 80s right after the state acquired it. Beautiful place. We camped on the east side in a mess of poison ivy before the leaves came out. Only explored the abandoned cabins a d school before they were restored. Anxious to go back there now. Thanks for the great video.

    I just stumbled on your video. VERY nice! I wonder if Lime Island would make a good base for a few days of shipwreck scuba diving? I go up to the straits in July/August with my 25' Rinker Cuddy (drafts 3'). Would I be able to dock there? Is there electricity available at all?

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  Před 2 lety +1

      Yep, you can dock there. The pier often has a sailboat, tug boat, yacht docked there. They don't have electricity for watercraft, but the cabins do. The entire island is solar powered, so they don't have a lot of electricity to spare.

    • @Horsewomann
      @Horsewomann Před 2 lety

      @@RestlessViking Very cool, thank you. I'm quite familiar with solar panel output. I have a 12 panel array on my pole barn, and a battery backup system for when grid power goes down (pretty often in my neck of the woods). I use a Cpap at night, so I do need a small power source.

    What’s a harbor of refuge?

    • @RestlessViking
      @RestlessViking  Před 3 lety +5

      A harbor that has facilities for sailors to take refuge from bad weather. It has room for a number of vessels to stay during storms and the harbormaster has to allow for that stay during bad weather. Michigan has developed 83 and I believe those harbors specifically (also) allow for overnight stays.
