A surprising issue with the XSR 900 ... the Battlax S22s

  • I was a bit disappointed with the feel of the bike thru corners. It felt a bit like a boat and I've chucked it up to the tracer swing arm. If you think about it that made no sense since the bike has the same wheelbase as a KTM Super Duke 1290. I would have never guess it was due to the Bridgestone Battlax s22...
    Sure the Pirelli Diablo Rosso 4 are a bit more expensive and they might last 2-3 times as little, but they COMPLETE this package by turning it into something fun!
    I'm now curious how the Michelin Road 6 stack up against the Pirellis ...

    Hi! Thanks for mentioning this, I just bought the 2024 xsr900 a month ago and in some corners I occasionally felt a little more unsure of riding on the standard tyres compared to other bikes I've ridden, so I'll definitely look into changing them. As for the seat, I've just ordered a Kelpi seat with a different trim from Australia, I've heard great things about them, so if you're still looking for a replacement I can let you know if it improves the riding quality when I get it!

    I has Bridgstones on my 2020
    First gen XSR 900.
    They were horrid..to the point i thought the bike was the issue..
    Anyway when come put new tyres on 4k miles on..
    Std Pirrelli Diablos
    Old stock product but God the bike ran like on running rails..
    Much better..
    Bridgstone..."no excuse"
    The transformation was night & day..
    Even the old Pirrelli Diablo..still rate em today.
    £122.00 for a set lose.
    Now thats good value for ya buck

    Running S22’s on my 21 S1000RR daily, and I have to disagree. I absolutely love the tires. The bike has the same flickability it had on my OEM Metzeler Racetec RRs, and they wear better.

      Interesting ... how are you riding your bike? Are you in a place with open flat land lite generous bends? Basically are you mostly doing straight road pulls?
      I know a bunch of people with S1000RR and they are very happy with the Metzeler tires. We are mostly riding in the hills lots of bends lots of sharp turns. I don't know how the Metzeler RRs stack against the S22's but what I can tell you the Pirrelli is much better than the S22s ...

    I'm a bit surprised how many people like Michelin Road, to me the leaning speed isn't very linear especially when you try to push it to a deeper lean angle. (It gets slower when it gets deeper) I do admit that it performs really well on cold tires though, my Q3+ slips when leaning on road marks on cold tires while Roads don't.

      Good to know I'll keep that in mind when shopping for the next tire. I too am tiring to figure out if the hype is justified for the Michelin... the Pirellis were and are a known quantity to me but I do try to get out of my comfort zone and try out new things... who knows what gem you can stumble upon.

    The right tires make all the difference in the world. I remember in 1993 driving on a racetrack in a Pontiac formula firebird with 6 speed and Goodyear tires. I was going about 125 through the corners. The tires were rated to 150 mph. The cars felt secure on the tires without any slippage and that was on wet pavement. I also changed out my Dunlops on a kawasaki to Metzlers and my riding in the rain was stable even in corners. At the time the Dunlop was the top rated street tire.

      125 in corners or sweepers? Coz unless your firebird is a F1 120 in a corner is crazy

    The front brakes are awesome in terms of performance, you are attaching an opinion to brand! The S22 tyre is also a very good tyre. I don't get it...

    The S22 is one of the better sport tires on the market, it's not sub-par at all. The OEM-spec that Yamaha uses has less tread and is softer, but performs as well as the original, I rode them back-to-back. From your description, it sounds like you squared off your tires. That will happen quickly if you do a lot of straight-line riding on hypersport tires. Twitchiness on corner exit, imprecise entry and instability while leaned over is exactly what that then feels like, totally ruins the handling. Unfortunately, the same thing will happen with your Pirellis, they are also a very soft tire and will wear down similarly to the S22. For those of us unfortunate enough to live where most roads are straight, the Road 6 or CRA4 are much better tire choices that will handle similarly well, but for way longer.

      This is why I stopped using the stock pirelli diablo rosso that came with my Street triple and swapped to the michelin road series. It lost some flickability, but it's still an incredibly nimble bike. It gained much longer tyre life, and phenomenal wet and cold performance. When the S22's wear out on my xsr, I'm changing them to michelins as well

      I didn't have the S22s for that long to square them off and they felt wrong from the moment I picked up the bike with 0km.
      I don't think there a good tier not compared to the Pirellis and from what I read online not compared to the michelins either. But it might be something with the respective batch that came with the bike ... that I can't tell I've only had this pair ....

    I wonder if that has to do with the geometry or set up of your motorcycle because I have heard great reviews for the S22's. I had a set of these on my K6 GSXR1000 and loved them with the exception of how quickly hey wore out.

      Its possible ... the bike is definitely designed for straight pulls rather than cornering so the S22 might tip it over into what I consider not acceptable for spirited riding. On something like a sportsbike it might be easier to push the bike over on S22's I don't know since on all my sportsbikes I've ran Pirelli's ... the only thing I know is that once I've swapped the bike became a lot more compliant and the stability on the rear has improved.

    When I bought my r1 I got about 1800 miles on whatever tires came stock. I bought the same ones and got about 3500 then I upgraded to michelins and got over 6000 and the tires were still round. I really think they pay tire makers for a worse cheaper version to put on the brand new bikes.

    Old model XSR900, wore out the Bridgestones in less than 4k and fitted Road Attack 2's (cheap on eBay) and they make it much faster turning (nearly fell off on the first turn!) and good stability. I am sure there are yet better tyres but not for £220 pair fitted. I have the suspension on near softest and damping on near highest, which works for me at 70kg but do have to tweak the springing as the mileage increases as it gets a touch softer. 700 Tracer turned into a giant pogo stick after 7k due to ever softer springing and damping so it seems to be a Yamaha failure but the older xsr comes with quite stiff suspension unlike the older mt09.

      4k miles I assume so 6.5k Km that is really not a lot for the S22. That's diablos lifecycle, that feels off or the S22 is much worse than even my current impression of them. Or you must be riding the bike really hard, doing burnouts? For me usually a set of Diablos Rosso's lasts me for ~6-7000km

      @@mikebikealot Nope, I am a mature rider and the lads in the UK are killing them in 2000 miles - no idea what they are doing! The other mod is dropping the front end by 15mm (by raising the forks thru the yokes), have not tried that yet. Some like the faster turning, others don't, but I would do it to get the bike a little closer to the ground as I am only just flat-footing it.

    If skimping on the tires is about me getting out of the dealer for $11,450 for my 22 xsr900 then I think it's okay with OEM's packaging in cheap tires. I think it's more about OEM's meeting a budget. I used up 2 rears and 1 OEM front s22. I will not be running them anymore as I have put 5500 miles on those and I'm not impressed with them but not disappointed. They were fun miles. Got some Road 6's I'm putting on tomorrow. I personally use up the stock tires to get to really know the bike before I start riding a new bike very aggressively. But this vid has me excited to slap on the Road 6s that's for sure. The OEM tires on bikes have nearly half the rubber or tread than the actual tire. My first (the oem) S22 rear had no life left at 1700 miles. The second rear lasted until 5500 miles same with the OEM front.

    The S22's that ship with Yamaha bikes are OEM S22's manufactured to Yamaha's specifications. THEY ARE NOT the same as S22 retail tires from Bridgestone. The OEM/Yamaha S22's are 1-compound cheap rubber tires, the retail S22's are 3-compound tires made with significantly better rubber and to far better specifications.
    If you ask Bridgestone support, they will confirm this themselves! This is pretty normal amongst all brands - OEM/stock tires are ALWAYS inferiour to retail tires from pretty much ANY brand.

      In my opinion black and red really go well its a bit edgy but the contrast is one of my favorite. Maybe a touch of blue would really compliment the look.

    Tires are very personal. So, if someone tells you that you’re wrong, it’s just their projection of ignorance. I’ve used diablo rosso’s, road 6’s and the power rs recently. All great tires. I even kept the stock tires (s20’s) on my mt10 for two years without issue. Ride safe 👍🤪🇨🇦

      I think this stems from the fact that most modern tires are amazing and in general way better than needed for street application. There is no doubt in my mind that I could have continued to ride with the S22's.
      I'm sure that the S22 are equal if not better then the Pirelli in certain applications like braking ... I say that because when I look at them they appear to be a lot more shallow so they must have a greater contact patch under upright deformation ...
      However as you mentioned for my particular riding style and from what I expect from the motorcycle to do in corners the Diablo Rosso's are just a better fit.

    Interesting, I have only put 700km on my S22s but have no bad feedback from them yet. Just wondering, what do you weigh and what tyre pressure are you running? I'm 74kg and liking 34psi front 38psi rear.

      I weight ~75kg and I'm 180cm with ought any gear, I run my tires per factory spec 36psi front 42 psi rear.
      Normally I would tune that after I get use to the bike and usually I end up dropping the psi. However I always start from factory specs and since I changed my tires I kept the same pressure, same chain tension, same suspension settings.
      I preferer to wait till late spring to start fine tuning the bike since riding in weather where the roads are damp and cold is no fun...
      Right now performance wise the only thing that bothers me on the bike is the front brake... suspensions are really well calibrated for me, the tires are amazing, the only thing left is the stopping power of the front brake. The bike blows thru the front brake too much under breaking, it feels like a Diavel ... I'll probably do braded lines and change the pads first to see if there's an improvement in stopping power ...
      If I can fix that then the bike it will ends up being really good street racer. I was actually contemplating changing it for a Streetfighter but now that the bike is fun to ride I'm going to try to keep it ... if I can fix the brake and also keep the cruise control (my major gripe with Ducatis) I see that as a major win :D
