  • Naming your party is one of the first memorable milestones in a long running campaign, along with killing your first major boss and being thwarted by your first kindergarten-tier puzzle the DM got off of the Denny’s kid’s menu. It’s a big decision that will echo through every session following… so what was your name, and why did you pick it? Answer in the comments below.

Session 0, the DM goes on a long rant about how he hates the spell Silvery Barbs, but he's not going to ban it. However if the party uses it, enemies are going to use it as well. So we huddle and announce that we're not going to be casting silvery barbs, and that we've picked a party name: The Silvery Barbs. We flew dangerously close to the sun on that one.

    The M.A.G.S
    (Morally Ambiguous Group of Samaritans)
the name came from our party leader, a warforged vengeance Paladin named M4G5 which to most, we simplified it to Mags when doing call outs in combat
and then the Monk thought "Hey M.A.G.S as an Acronym is a pretty sick idea"
Thus the infamous party "The M.A.G.S" was born
with members with public nicknames up to but limited to
    "The Unmaker" (my star druid)
"The Radiant of the South" (crystal Dragonborn monk)
"the Mechanical Reaper" (M4G5 the paladin)
"Maestro of the Maelstrom" (our Swords bard)
    "The Undying" (Zealot barbarian)
    and newest member last
"The Wraith" (Our new phantom Rogue)
together we terrify the masses by complete accident and when people meet us, we are abunch of goofs with a pention for carnage

In all TTRPGs I've played its rare for the party to name themselves, as it never really becomes relevant thus we don't bother. However, once we named ourselves "What's up with the stars!?!" by accident because that was the question we kept asking people in relation to a scroll talking about something important happening with the stars, we never got answer about that.

So, the party I'm apart of have yet to decide a name. But the setting is an Urban Fantasy one and all of us are technically paranormal investigators. I say *Technically* due to how my character is one of the two people whose actually working as investigators while the other two PCs are a Off Duty Beat Cop who can't work due to a court case he was in and a Homeless girl who had a few run ins with the paranormal.
And personally, I feel like having our group be called "P.I. - We're not detectives." would be interesting. Since P.I. means both Paranormal Investigator and Private Investigator. So the We're not detectives part makes sense. Of course, "P.I. - We're Ghost Detectives" is also an option but that would make people think we're actual ghosts. And Ghostbusters could get us sued.
So I'll just go and ask what the other Players think during our next session.

  • @GuillermoHerreraHernandez-v6u

I am currently playing in a campaing named after our party's name. We've just finished a modified version of Dragon of Icespire Peak and our group was reduced to 2 members after some players left: A Wizard of the Order of the Scribes (myself) and a Druid of the Stars (the other player). We were in Phandalin after dealing with the dragon and the circus from which my character was came to the town. I conviced my father and the other player to do a special show for the crowd and, when it came time to introduce ourselves, we came up on the spot with "The Magic of the Stars".
Since then we have travelled far and wide dealing with all sorts of treaths and, whenever possible, we introduce (very organically I might say) the name of the group (since it's very marketable), here are some of our best hits:
"There is nothing that The Magic of the Stars cannot deal with" "When all hope is lost, The Magic of the Stars will be there to help" "You can always trust in The Magic of the Stars to always do the right thing".

Last game I was in was an old school essentials game. We didn’t give ourselves a group name, but because I went through four PCs in that game, and an NPC enamored with one of the clerics took up her profession to gain favor, we wound up with four clerics. So our GM eventually dubbed us the A-men Team.

In a campaign I've been running for two and a half years now, every player started with anywhere from two to three characters. The goal was to be a large, open world, long-term game. The various players who could make it each week would swap around their characters to pick their party dynamics. This way, the players who make it don't get screwed over when, for example, the party healer can't make it. Someone else can swap into their backup healer. Since we started with 20 PCs, they called themselves: The Dirty 20.

Our Party was formed for Lost Mines of Phandelver and is currently working through The Shattering Obelisk (basically Phandelver part 2). We quickly realized all the characters had something in common, so our super creative Sorcerer came up with the name: Ignis Insania. Because we like fire and, well, can be pretty insane!
The Sorcerer is a Tiefling from Avernus who doesn't care much whether his target lives, even if we might still get information from them.
The Tabaxi Artificer started off thinking of herself as a Gnome with a skin condition, needs to touch and open absolutely everything and likes to make things go boom.
The formerly enslaved Goblin Warlock runs up to all Goblins shouting "The Great and Powerfull Me is back!", ruining all our sneaky plans.
My Human Fighter is a runaway noble daughter who usually tries to go the diplomatic route with inteligent life, but more than once "accidentally" killed an enemy that got on her nerves, instead of keeping them alive for questioning.
The teenage Halfling Druid and his firefox feyspirit are the most reasonable, but they have their moments of youthful carelessness, too. Especially when it comes to running ahead of the group.
Despite all our flaws, we have grown into a lovely, almost sibling like unit and have a blast every session, which is why we decided to continue even after finishing Lost Mines. Shattering Obelisk is supposed to finish around level 12-13 and I'm wondering which module to suggest after (Can't du adaptations because of AL-rules). Our Tiefling wants/needs to go to Avernus. Do you folks have any ideas?

In our two different campaigns so far: Dragonfell and MisFibbs. Campaign 1 (Dragonfell), we came up with the name on the fact that we had fought a few dragons at that point. "We are such, that we have seen a dragon fall." MisFibbs (Campaign 2: Electric Boogaloo) was because we were a bunch of misfits and our "mascot" was named Fibbs, who kinda steered/de-railed the party on his whims.

I have run 2 long form campiagns (more than two years years each). So, I have stories for both.
The first campaign, by the point of nameing, consisted of a half-orc bard named Thrash, goliath barbarian named Davore, a goliath monk named Fjore, a dwarf paladin named Thor, and the last original member of the group Torend, white dragonborn ranger. after a very note wortyhy adventure including beholders, demons, undead infest pocket demension, and a beholder necromancer, Thrash dubbed them the Exemplars for their exemplarly work. Bog standard, nothing to note.
The 2nd group however, was more noteworthy. By the point of nameing, the group consisted of a dwarf cleric of Bahamet named Rhogar (formerly black dragonborn), a green dragonborn barbarian named Kaido (secret worshipper of Tiamat), a yuan-ti named Madrid (this was this players sixth character in the campaign, and he went onto play a grand total off 11 in the one and half years he played in a three year campiagn), and the original two members of the party, a human assassin named Augustus, and a pyromaniac half-orc edlrich knight named Dorn. They did odd jobs leading up to this nameing, and a good chunk started being given to them by the royal archmage of the king, Odadeus (secretly a Ooblex, though the party is aware). after every job, Odadeus would being more exhausted by them, as every enocunters leads to him hireing them again, only to unearch more problems, such as when he aided them in dealing with a cult of hippie nazis (differnt story, different day), which led to them killing a fey monster, which led to two gods accending right in front of the city (another story, another day). He continuiosuly refered to them as bad omens, bringers of ill news, and recureing headaches, but mostly the first one. Eventually, Augustus and dorn came to the conclusion, thanks to their fame, to offically named themselves, The Omens (this happened only a little after the gods accended). Not long after this, things went south, but again, we can discuss that later.

I have a few stories. The first one was in a game that started out as an evil campaign at a high level, where all of our characters were killed, but were brought back to life by some powerful entity. However, considering that I had never played an evil character before and was fairly new to D&D, my character was made to be chaotic neutral... kind of. You know how when you create a character, you have an idea in mind, and then you play the character and learn about them and realize that they are NOTHING like you had planned them to be? Yeah, this character was much like that. He was a bit chaotic and crazy, but he was actually chaotic good. Not to pat myself on the back, but I think my character influenced a few of the others into shifting to a good alignment, also. In the end, we named ourselves Dawn's Twilight. We were a bunch of previously scummy people, but like the dawn, there was a bit of light barely peeking through.
The second story was in another fairly high-level campaign, set in a custom Spelljammer setting. I'm sure I'm not the only one that finds that groups take some time to figure out their party name, so in interactions with officials that ask for a party's name can get... awkward. In this one, it was a similar situation. The party didn't seem to like each other very much, and we weren't even sure if we'd stick together. We couldn't figure out a name, so we went with "Subject to Change" when we were first asked. And then we realized how GENIUS it was. We may change the name later, and our party could also be subject to change, since we didn't like each other very much yet and could die pretty easily in this setting.
The third story was for a game that I am currently running. The party's first quest was to go after a cult that had abducted a bunch of children. The party at the time had a thri-kreen and a reborn that required less time to sleep than the others, as well as a goblin child who was overly eager and wanted the party to go after the child, no breaks. I let them, and someone joked about how the party name should be "The Juggernauts," since nothing could stop their death march. I took it as their actual name, I used it in my intros for sessions, the players were confused that that was their party name, but embraced it. Maybe I goofed up as a DM, but the players are having fun, and I can't wait to see how crazy they get later down the line.

A sadly now-defunct campaign had our group known as "Better Than Nothing". It came about when we were trying to think up a name for the group in a tavern, and a smartass Half-Elf Bard NPC went "Well, at least it's better than nothing." when we resigned ourselves to something.
At which point the Warlock goes "Yes! That's it! That's our name!" And since then, we were known as "Better Than Nothing".
Currently, my Paladin's group is known as "The Traveling Gourmands". Because we met while guarding a caravan, decided to start a caravan of our own, and my Paladin is quite the chef that makes delectable food for the group.
Side note: Said Paladin is a Naga, and has only recently relented on not using any and all available non-rotting meat to cook. Including that of sapient humanoids.

"Team Vodos". I doubt it's the final name, but it's the only one they have.
The campaign began when the team was recruited to go treasure hunting by a friendly NPC who had some history with the ruler of the island.
The ruler decided that her best course of action was to put the party in a showmatch of Paintball (she built a massive arena over a river to entertain all of the pirates. Including herself.)
The party convinced the NPC to pay their entry wager and the ruler promised them extra rewards if they dumped a bucket of paint on the friendly NPC in front of a crowd.
Before entry, they were asked for a party name so she could announce their entry. Since nobody could decide, the Order Cleric stepped up and named the party after himself.
Miraculously, they won the match and dumped the bucket of paint on their recruiter's head the moment after victory, earning themselves a good sum of gold.

When we were at the goblin cave fighting a bugbear, the fighter finished it off with a critical…in the nuts(our dm gave us great details of how it happened). The game in question has been going for four and a half years. We have gone from 2 to 20. For the longest time, until four months ago we were Osthoto's Thugs. Osthoto is the intelligent and optimistic elf that kicked off our campaign. A year and a half he switched sides when he saw the writing on the wall and joined the Betrayer Gods. It was only after we reached level 20 and finished our third major arc that a name change was seriously suggested. We'd bound the would be king of the Feywild to our will and one of our Archdruid companions referred to us as the Diamonds in the Rough.

    Vicious Mockery
With two bards and a rogue who took Magic Initiate to get the vicious mockery cantrip; plus the five of them humiliating my monsters in various creative ways, a name like that would have already made sense. But then I lost my mom and baby sister, who had down syndrome, very tragically. If any of you know any downies, then you know that something about that 43rd chromosome packs in a lot of extra love, wonder, and (most importantly) sass. Before everything happened, I'd theory-crafted my sister as a bard with our family dog as a kind of familiar, and with vicious mockery as the very first cantrip on her load-out. That girl comically verbally eviscerated anyone who crossed her which, frankly, didn't take much. The second session after getting back from the funeral was when my players chose their party name. They went with the Vicious Mockery.

I mean our name wasn't really all that super smart: The Ashen Guard. We were named as such because there were divine artifacts called the Ashes of the Star- weapons of great power crafted by the fae gods in order to be given to worthy warriors in times when darkness encroached upon the world. We'd already found one, and were of a mind to find the rest and make certain no evil hands managed to find them. ...so we became their locators, and guardians. Simple yet effective naming. The one reason this name is important to me is because it was the first time that I personally came up with a party name that the party I was in all agreed they loved. So yeah. It'll always be a special thing to me.

    The Dragon Slayer(s)(?)
Yes, we actually spell it like that. We are level 13 and one of the NPCs we are closest to is an ancient red dragon. When we talk with him, he is always in his elf form, a very chipper and friendly guy.
Long ago a villain forced him into a blood pact that made him help the villain. The way to stop that was to 'die'. So he came to us in his HUGE ancient red dragon form and pretended to attack us. We shot him one with a regular bow and he 'died'. Since we weren't supposed to know that our friend is a dragon, we don't know if we can call ourselves the Dragon Slayers.
Also there was another incident with a creature we don't know if it was a dragon? It was an alien and it turns out we didn't actually kill it???
In short we have many run ins with dragons but they are mostly very friendly and helpful, but it would be so cool to say "Yeah, we are the Dragon Slayers!"
So we're not sure if we can call ourselves that or not

The Motley Crew. I used the phrase to describe the party in a beginning session recap and the musician and band geeks in the group loved it.
Name TBA. This was the sequel campaign to The Motley Crew campaign. This was given to them by a seemingly rude guild admitted secretary. In reality it was suggested as a place holder name by a NPC party member erased by a False Hydra.
Later in the Name TBA campaign the group was given the chance to actually pick a proper name. After some discussion they settled on Fumble… due to their knack of fumbling their plans due to bad dice RNG.

Nothing oficial as of yet, But I do have an idea...
As a group, we have a running joke that we're nothing but glorified mailmen, because most story beats so far were "bring this letter to this NPC". Our Wizard has a talking pseudodragon we've pretty much all adopted as a mascot, and we all love to eat the cookies that said wizard bakes for us on a regular basis (regrettably this is in game only, as we play online).
As such, I will be suggesting something along the lines of "Dragon Cookie Couriers" for our group name during the next session.

My group of friends like to call ourselves the fellowship of the toad (a game of talismans, being turned into a toad and one friend always being called a hobbit 😅). This is explain our dnd group name.
5 sessions in, we make a bet who can kill the troll we're fighting gets to name the group. One flame sword taking the head later we have a winner. But another player offers 200 gold to get the rights. Deal made.
This player then goes off and comes up with the "Torrid Order Against Dragons".... toad for short 😅😂

DM here. They went with the Domers. Why, two reasons. 1) The Barbarian is bald, so it's kind of a pun. 2) It's a running joke among our friend group, IRL. Doming means giving head.

Nothing interesting with our current group, but it reminds me how we naimed our ship with one of the group I played with. I intended it to be called Arcadia (because my bard-captaign was a shameless rip-off of Harlock; not the 2013 version, I'm not *that* much of an edgelord). My fellow players didn't like it because they associated it with a grocery shop. That was followed by days in group chat and two game sessions of discussion how to call that fricking ship. We ended up calling it Bonaventure, which was the only name everyone liked
Our group then fell apart for personal reasons and I later ended up playing this character with another group. I have no idea what are in-game reasons they split up (I have some means to contact other players, but I'm pretty sure they can't care less about that campaign after three years and everything that happened in these three years) or where that ship gone; my head canon is that they didn't make a good crew after all, and eventually other characters bought off my bard's share of the ship and he went his own way

I commented on the first one, I’ll comment again here. We call ourselves a natural disaster. It has to do with our party competition and how completely and utterly insane we can be on a given day. What’s our party composition you might ask? OK, What else Ranger, which is me, a cleric/Druid, and enchantment wizard/paladin, a time, wizard, perpetually, drunk, monk, and a hammer wielding, gambling addicted, dwarf warlock. Take the best shot as to who the most sane, one of us is on a given day, sometimes it’s the cleric/druid, sometimes it’s me, a lot of times me, sometimes it’s our Wizard/paladin. And especially with all the damage that we are known to on a given day, between my arrows and everybody else spells, we walking natural disaster. Keep in mind we only coined this name about two years ago, before that we didn’t have a name, and we didn’t darn will care. We were just with the adventuring guild, the way he hasn’t set up is a mix of module and homebrew. That was after our original paladin left, Our only waffle, good member, I miss him still, his character anyway the amount of damage he could pull off was astronomical. Great weapon, master plus divine smite plus he was a math major, you can see where this is going, the damage he Dell at low levels was upper upwards of 100 to 200. We are a group that originally starting in college, I don’t know if anyone else ever watches this, and by anyone else I mean anyone else from my group. We have all since graduated and scattered to the Pural four wins, God, love, discord for keeping us all together.

To advice, just know the mechanics of your character inside and out.
I've been playing the same Abjurer Wizard for the last four and a half years and there is still stuff I forget about. It just slows down the game when you have to go back and check how things work for everyone. Worse yet is when you do something really cool and then you look back later and... yeah you couldn't actually do that thing. It can really spoils the moment.

OK, you first nailed my first two requirements for making a character, your race and your class, you have officially given your character job. So now you’ve gotta figure something out, in relation to the group that you will be joining, if you have a group, you need to figure out a backstory. How is it that you became a paladin, for this, I recommend learning every ounce of Lord about mountain dwarves that you can. Well, I know dwarves is that they are craftsman, particularly proud of their own work, work done by their own race, a little wary of magic that hasn’t been viewed/made by them, thank you, Brenner, liver of metal, armaments, as in weaponry plus armor, fine food, and beverage of any variety. They have the constitution of a rock, which is to say a lot, and at least unforgotten realms, if you were doing forgotten realms, there are three main gods, Dictation will butcher this, so I am so terribly sorry I am blind, as in physically, and I’ve been playing for six years. I’m just telling you what works for me. Are a bit like religious Crusaders, their power comes from a guide, so you need to figure out what your oath would be. That oath is a sub class, plan ahead for what that would be and what you would have to do it. I’m so sorry information dump, it’s kind of who I am. So make a story, doesn’t have to be too involved, about how hard-working craftsman mount dwarf became hard-working, potentially battle ax, wielding, they like axes and hammers, I found, or dwarf does,. What event caused you to have a deeper connection with the gods in a way that would make you have essentially your attack power bound and chain to them. I’ve never figured out a good reason. Why for my own personality therefore, I’ve never played, not that I would never want to. You’re probably going to make your dump stack, when you do roll stats, either wisdom or dexterity, you’re going to need strength and Kong because you’re essentially a fighter, but then you’re spell not a fire is charisma charisma? I have no clue. Makes sense for bards, doesn’t seem to make sense for paladins, until you’ve seen one in action that is. I have, and for him it made perfect sense. Oh yeah, you could put your dat in intelligence, but then again the difference between wisdom and intelligence is the difference between booksmart and common sense, so maybe that should be intelligence. For some reason, I always forget about that, I think it’s because I am a ranger first and foremost, and my life from all around dexterity and wisdom, with a little strength and Intel throw in the max where charisma is my dat. Those guys were forgotten. Realms are as follows: Morden, Kadin and doom.
