  • An unplanned video where I question Hornby's logic in releasing the Christmas Wagon in June and I trial a proposed fix to the Flying Scotsman Steam Generator cutting out issue using CV211.

Water condensing in the chimney and blocking the steam depends on the prevailing room humidity! High humidity will cause blockage, low humidity will not. That is my theory and I am sticking with it. Nice model though and 👍 to Hornby.

Amazing model. its funny you should say humidity, I am seeing the temperature of the fill water having an influence, but early days as I continue to play.

The reason they sell them in July is because it is winter time in Australia and more like Christmas. No really it probably has something to do with summer holidays when children are more likely to get holiday treats. Hornby know their market.

Christmas in Australia of course! Id like to think Hornby know their market, but this one just feel so odd and think of the marketing in December they could do.

If you dab a small amount of WD 40 with a cotton bud I found it works well

Thank you I will try that, sounds like that could be the trick, so obvious when I think about it. Many thanks for sharing.

Hornby must be celebrating what the USA calls, "Christmas in July". The Christmas in July thing has grown every year here in the States and has become a big deal. I don't get it, but it does generate sales. As for the steam generator I do wish you could have given 50 to 59 a try if that is possible just for shits and giggles. I do like the coordinated drive wheels, sound, and steam plume the loco has. Anyway, great video Jersey Bill

Christmas in July hasn't reached us yet (we usually follow the US after a couple years) But its a Hornby thing to release the Christmas waggon right in the middle of summer, maybe they are the trend setters! The Scotsman is a work off art, I tried to keep the scope of the video to the recommendation but I continue to play in the background, the one thing I will sat is the seam appears to reduce as the numbers go down so not a effective. Are you aware of Knoebels Amusement park in PA? I am (or was) their only UK member of their model train club, I am penning a video at the moment on their O gauge models they sell.

@@dustyshelfcollectables I was not aware of Knoebels Amusement park nor the model train club they have, I'll have to look into it. Thanks!

I wonder if with the Scotsman you have here if it’s actually to do with it being a single chimney locomotive and not to do with the CV setting, sure there is an improvement by reducing the value of the specific CV you mentioned but in the video you mentioned how the P2 doesn’t have this issue but one thing to note with that model which I have just received myself today is on that one is it’s a double chimney locomotive but when you use the steam generator you are advised to change the chimney out for one included in the accessories pack, it’s still a double chimney but it only has a singe hole for the steam to escape, you mentioned how with the Scotsman you had to unblock the chimney to get steam coming out of it.
Great video overall here Dusty Shelf Collectables.

I didn't know the P2 came with an alternate chimney, that's interesting, I think its just the shape or size of the exit hole that allows a sort of bridging action or water and the steam is not powerful enough to clear it. Thanks again for watching and the points you sent.

Big thanks back👍 You could try dropping it a bit more and yes, following Hornby advice, to 55 but, as it does nearly look about there, maybe try 58. For me 60 was the magic number and it didn’t bridge again. There is also another CV setting to try, if this doesn’t work and again by dropping that as well and see what results you get. For me this didn’t need to be done but, did try it and filmed the results. Like you, I’m obviously seeing how it goes as for some it’s worked like it has for me but, for instance Stephen Bromley, Hi Stephen, none have, including the full reset unfortunately but, yours looks promising. 🤞

Thanks mate, I will have a look at your video regarding the other CV. Thanks for posting the tip in the first place!

I think Modeloco said to try either side of 60 (ie 59 or 61) to see if that gives you more consistency.

I will have a go, I limited the scope of that video but I did feel there was less steam with the lower setting, I have some time over the weekend for another play.
