  • The Toyosu Market in Tokyo, Japan is a 4 million square foot area for squid, mackerel, and, most importantly, tuna. The market is home to the world-renowned tuna auctions, where expert bidders bet millions of dollars on top-tier tuna. But the population of tuna is on the decline, specifically bluefin tuna, which is known as the king of sushi. Business Insider follows expert bidder Takayuki Shinoda inside the fast-paced world of tuna bidding and its role in marine life sustainability.

The problem is that these large fish don't reproduce and grow up that quickly, so they don't reach maturity until 5 years. That means you would actually need multiples of that age in order for the population to really recover, which would mean decades of decreased or no catching

Prawn based sushi is where it’s at 👌 and that can just be bred and matured in a tank.
Prawns need to be cooked though but a place I went to sells warm, slightly fried with batter, sushi. The ends of the roll have full prawns sticking out fully battered, the sauce too, god. It tastes like takoyaki in roll form with rice. So good... I want some now.

I've heard in some countries, when they hunt land animals, every 5-7 seasons they have 1 full year no hunting year when all the animals can reproduce and leave their offspring to boost population, but for sure there are seasons when you can hunt each of the species.
I think this needs to be implemented in regards to marine life too.

The problem of declining catches due to overfishing is not limited to Japan. There is no change in the fact that it is a problem that fishermen in countries all over the world must think about. Even if one country regulates the amount of fish caught, it doesn't make sense if fishermen in another country are overfishing. Tuna is not the only tuna that is endangered due to overfishing, and if sushi becomes more popular around the world in the future, it will undoubtedly become a major problem.

You must know $3 million is a "gift price" to celebrate the new year. There is a custom to bid with pretty much high price the first auction of the year and the winner earn the fame. In usual auction, the price would be some ten thousand dollars. The gift price also depends on the economic state of the year. $3 million at 2019 was the highest among recent years.

    It's so weird
Here in Ireland our Bluefin population is higher than ever. The Tuinnín here is the Northeastern Atlantic Bluefin tuna stock that migrates from the Mediterranean to Northern waters to feed. They migrate to Ireland from Summer to late Autumn. In
Ireland it is legal to fish for Tuinnín as a sport fish on a C&R basis. A tagging programme was also setup to moniter the stock. It is illegal to fish for them commercially Irish waters.
They're increased population has also been noted in the UK and Norway. But Ireland has had the best explosion by far. 600lb is the average Tuinnín and a big one is 800 + . They are mostly caught on the West, North West and South West Coasts. The counties are Gaillimh, Maigh Eo, Corcaigh and Dún na nGall. Irelands population of massive Bluefin Tuna is because we outlawed the commercial catching and sale of this amazing species. Most fisherman who caught Tuinnín commercialy now run Fishing guide boats from all those counties listed to catch and release some big game Bluefin. The rest of the world should learn from this example
