    Tow bar section (6:18), you probably mean a towing capacity, not a charging capacity...
    Also, at 8:55 I suspect the green zone drive mode turns off the petrol engine in urban areas, not the electric motor?

    At least with the eNiro the stated range was much more 'realistic' than a lot of other EV's. So - it might not claim 300+ miles, but I bet it gets closer to the 300 miles than many cars that claim 300+ miles.

    Thanks for this quick review, will be interesting to see a video where you get to drive it...As an e-Niro owner here in France since March 2019....one of the first off the boat I can say we still love this car after 3 years with it.. Apart from a passenger wing mirror that stopped folding back on locking last year (replaced under warranty) the car has been faultless in 58,000 km. I’ve grown to like the snub-nosed shape of the ‘old’ Niro but I do like the front of the new one, though I couldn’t live with that different coloured C-pillar...which I think is an option. Ours was a retirement present to ourselves so doubt will ever buy another new car but having got one of the first it is interesting to see how in spite of newer competitors the e-Niro is still a top seller.

      It seems like they did a redesign of the Niro and forgot to address the main complaint people had with the old one... charging speed. It should have been possible to raise it to at least 120KW...no idea why they didn't though...

  • @Noah_E
    @Noah_E Před 2 lety +5

    I really like it, but why put the charge port in a supposedly sacrificial part of the car (the bumper) where it is more likely to get damaged in a fender bender or bumped while street parked? Higher up on the hood (bonnet), a quarter panel, or fender (wing) just seems like better placement for something that if compromised would leave it unable to charge.

  • @judebrown4103
    @judebrown4103 Před 2 lety +6

    The front central charging point is so you can use any sort of charger, ostensibly... Totally agree with you though I always reverse into a parking space. I guess you'd need an extra long lead if you have to reverse into your drive for safety reasons... Shouldn't reverse out onto a main road.
    A bigger boot and a frunk, good... Increasing external dimensions, bad. If this means the e-Niro4+ gets cheaper by 2024 I'm all for it!

    • @nightowlnzab
      @nightowlnzab Před 2 lety +3

      It's just a refresh, so minimal underlying changes to the platform. If they improved it all over, it'd compete directly with the EV6, which would be foolish. This is intended to be a more affordable option.

    • @bbar182

      Yes but the EV 6 is a lot more expensive and powerful. Totally different animal.

    • @stephenshannon3706
      @stephenshannon3706 Před 2 lety

      It’s true Rapid charging rate can be an advantage, but it is often overstated. For many people charging at home will be the preferred location. Why? Overnight charging rates can be 5 to 10 times cheaper; speed of charging is not an issue overnight on my driveway. Admittedly not everyone has a driveway and some drivers do most of their miles repeatedly on the motorway over very long distances; for those drivers, speed of charging is a paramount consideration. But for the vast maJority of the general public journeys of more than 150 miles in a day will be the exception, since the average annual mileage is only c8000 miles.

    • @bbar182
      @bbar182 Před 2 lety

      @@stephenshannon3706 agreed most of the time rapid charging and mileage arent a concern but people are worried about the once in a while extreme case where it's super cold or you need that extra fifty miles because of a family emergency etc.

    • @stephenshannon3706
      @stephenshannon3706 Před 2 lety

      @@bbar182 Agree a lot of people perceive rapid charging as a major issue; just think that reality and perception are often misaligned. I suspect that most people in the UK have little direct experience of using / driving an EV and have often had their perceptions moulded by negative vested interests in the oil and auto industries and by sloppy journalism that has served to make many wary of switching to EV’s. Virtually all EV’s in the West are from legacy manufacturers, (Tesla apart) who have not been happy to undermine their investments in fossil vehicles. It has suited that lobby to foster doubts about the practicality of making the switch, including emphasising issues about charging speeds. It’s interesting to note that manufacturers have been wary of offering really price competitive EV’s because they know demand for fossil cars will remain as long as there is a significant price differential. Despite this increasing numbers of people are seeing benefits (economic, pollution, torque etc). Even Big Oil has recognised that the change is unstoppable. For me the bigger concern is that Big Oil has been able to buy a dominant market share of public charging - which means electric public charging will not remain cheap. The UK Gov’t has allowed this to happen, whatever their motive. This is a really good reason to charge from home on cheaper tariffs and make the most of self generation like solar etc whenever possible.

  • @geoffhemingway3926
    @geoffhemingway3926 Před 2 lety +2

    According to other reviews, this new version does NOT use the old platform but a new one which is why it's slightly longer and wider. As an owner of the current model, I think the outside design is, as Ginny says, very disjointed and I much prefer mine. Having said that, I like the interior more and having the slightly bigger boot would be very welcome, especially if the underfloor area is more useful (mine is very space - inefficient in this regard). All - in - all I think I'd wait to see what the EV4 is like before making any decisions.

    Reversing into charge space is the best idea, if vehicles park opposite whilst your charging to a front charge port you may find it difficult to reverse out, plus if you have to wait in the car sitting looking at a charger is dull as dishwater. Reversing in means and if your charging and all stalls are full another car arrives theres often a chance to communicate "ill just be going in 5 minutes" or do the right thing and say " Im going", 8 years 125,000 uk miles gives me some insight.
    Not up to dropping the 0-60! Dont press the go pedal so much but now you have lost some potential safety margin on overtake.......Ill stick with my 2014 Tesla.

    Not sure if this is on my list or not to replace my Kia Soul EV. It is going to depend on pricing.
    I am disappointed that the charge speed has not improved and am concerned that it will render the new Niro as outdated very quickly when compared to other cars in the same price bracket, but I suppose they need to create a clear differentiator between the Niro and the EV4. But if the top spec of this is over 40k then you are gonna start thinking Renault Megane E-Tech instead, or maybe EV4 if the gap in price is minimal.
    I could live with the speed in reality because the number of times I need a hefty rapid charge is actually pretty small, but I would want to see that reflected in the price. Otherwise, given the choice, you're clearly going to pick a model that costs the same but charges at twice the speed.

    • @JoseNobre
      @JoseNobre Před 2 lety +1

      I agree that the number of times you need fast charging is small for the average person, but as someone with a family with small children who already hate being in the car, telling then we'll have to stop for 43 min every 200 odd miles will make road trips and family holidays a pain the butt. So, yeah, this charging rate was a massive disappointment for me too...

    • @monk3yboy69
      @monk3yboy69 Před 2 lety +2

      Considering you can easily get 260 miles on one charge, how long are you road trips.
      And if you have travelled 260miles non stop, I’d think your kiddies would want to hop out the car and stretch for the 45 minutes to recharge the car.
      So I think the point does not really stand up to scrutiny.
      But I hear you.

    • @JoseNobre
      @JoseNobre Před 2 lety

      @@monk3yboy69 so 260mi is a best case scenario, highway at 120kph (75mph) with aircon and a trunk full of stuff, it'll probably do closer to 200/180? Maybe even 160 if the terrain is particularly hilly? Now, every year we do a summer drive that 450 km (280 mi) long. We leave at 5am to let my kids sleep most if not all the way. And today, in an ICE car, we do it non stop. If I think that the car might do 160 miles, because the trip is particularly hilly, that's two full battery charges, or several partial ones. At that rate? I'll leave at 5 am and arrive at 5 pm. Shoot me dead. But, again, I understand that this is a particular scenario but i think it's not uncommon

    The builder for the new Niro is now live on the Kia UK website. The contrasting C-pillar is only available on the top trim (and has a 150-pound upcharge). The gray trim around the wheels and along the side is only available on the EV (not other versions).
    While it is not as sexy at the EV6, I'd consider it as a more affordable way to get into an EV, with great practicality and lots of desirable features. I do like the distinctiveness of the contrasting C-pillar (blue body with black blade would be my pick).

So if you drive 50 miles, the first 30-35 will be electric then you switch to the ICE counterpart and when you get to your destination you will not be able to go in reverse to park? I'm sure there is some reserve or fall back but seems like a weird choice.

      It’s not the first car to have no mechanical ‘reverse gear’. All the existing Toyota hybrids are like that, with only the traction motor being reversible, and there is no reverse gear. The motor can run in either direction via the control unit.

    I actually really like the C pillar treatment.
    I would never have bought the old eNiro, simply because of the lack of towing capacity. This new one definitely goes on my list, though I might end up getting the Ioniq 5, 4 or even 3. I had considered one of the MGs, but with the price of electricity going ever higher, and the installation of solar panels at our home, I think that I'll be able to justify something a bit more interesting. My big question is whether I need the faster charging times of the Ioniqs or will the Niro EV be enough?

    • @devonbikefilms
      @devonbikefilms Před 2 lety

      Apart from “only you can answer that, it depends how you use it “ answer, I’ve found my eNiro to be fine, even on longer trips. Faster charging will always be nice, but it’s quick enough for us, although we do try to stop where we can go for a wander while it’s charging. 20 to 80% takes around 35 to 45 minutes, ish.

      @@devonbikefilms Thanks for your input. If it weren't for the need to visit my mother i the UK (we're in N. Spain), I really don't think that charge times would be important. Even then, if we weren't working, it still wouldn't be important. But we are, and it is.
      I think we'll probably end up waiting a bit for a smaller Ioniq to arrive.

      I am off to see it (again) at my local Kia reveal. Seen it once at Fully Charged but this time, taking my wife to see if she finds it comfortable. I have been battling for a while with the 'is the charge speed an issue' question and whether I should go for the Ioniq 5. I have a Soul EV first edition at the moment and whilst the charge speed is not the best, we don't rapid charge often and I am not sure it will be a big issue. Plus, if the charge curve has been flattened and the battery conditioning kicks in if you navigate to a charger on the in built nav, maybe it will be pleasantly acceptable. The Ioniq 5 is a big and quite thirsty car and I am just not sure I need to push the boat that far financially. If the wife likes this, I think we'll be getting one.

      i can no longer recommend the Nio given that super slow charging along with the price, if they reduced it by €7000 it would be way easier to purchase/recommend. MG took the lead with battery pre-heating and faster charging (in this segment). The Marvel R cost the same on leasing as the OLD Nio, not to mention the ZS is a whopping €100 less per month. So what is the point besides the styling of the Nio? It's too expensive for what it is.

      @@northcountryman Ioniq 5 and EV6 can hardly be described as a similar price point. They both start out with the poverty spec at roughly where the Niro tops out with the fully loaded spec. To get the same bells on either car as a loaded up Niro has means a 50k price tag. That's 8k more than a loaded Niro. That's not similar price point in my book.
      I considered an Ioniq 5 to replace my Soul. Nice car, but very big. It has the advantage of proper rapid charging, one of the best in the game, but when I considered that on average over the last 2 years I have rapid charged less than twice a month on average, it's not a big deal and I couldn't justify the extra 6-8k. I have ordered one of these and can't wait for it to arrive.
