    =============================
    This is a video of me coming into the break, to then land a Navy C-2A Greyhound on the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier, somewhere over the Persian Gulf a few years back. Pay special attention to my eyes once I roll out on short final and am behind the boat.
    This video was actually recorded while I was on deployment and at a time in my flying career when I really started to feel comfortable behind the boat. So much so, that we were definitely pushing the envelope on this particular pass (for as much as you can in a C-2, ha!) by coming in fast and breaking extremely early.
    Typically for a carrier break in an E-2 or C-2, you turn about one mile past the ship. For this pass though, it might have been 1/5 that distance. This is why I’m repeatedly looking out the window, as I’m trying to gauge just how far abeam we are from the boat and making sure that we are setting ourselves up to intercept a typical approach turn portfolio, which finally occurs just before I get on glide slope and start flying the ball.
    Also, the co-pilot in this video is an incredibly skilled pilot who was senior to me at the time. He backed me up throughout the entire approach and I absolutely could not have successfully attempted this pass without him. And it’s been a few years since this video was recorded, but I miss flying on and off of aircraft carriers every day.

    I think what a lot of non-Naval/Marine aviators don't appreciate is this: You're not just trying to land on a short, moving runway. You're trying to land on a short, moving runway that's moving diagonally to the right, while fighting a diagonal crosswind, constantly moving while you're trying to land on a tiny strip of that runway. And you still caught the 3-wire, I bet.

      I was a quartermaster/navigator for an aircraft carrier, we follow the wind when doing this. We also keep the speed of the ship around the speed of the wind to make it easier. USS Harry S Truman CVN 75.
      I've been on planes that land on carriers and it's terrifying, the way the pilot keeps making 100 adjustments per second and dropping height/speed every second. Not mention the seats are backwards in the back so when the plane grabs the cable your head doesn't snap forward but instead pushes against your headrest with so much g force. Will never forget it

You can always tell a good pilot, well one sign anyway, in that they use trim a lot instead of fighting the plane. The "ball" is a set of lights that give the pilot visual cues on how well they are lined up for landing, both glideslope (too high, too low, just right), and horizontal.

    I was first to talk with one of our female f/a18 pilots as she was getting out her plane after a terrible night of carrier quals offthe Virginia coast ,I will never forget the smile across her face when she found out the skipper had to bingo and she made it aboard right behind him. She never mentioned it but I think she never forgot that feeling of pride she had that night,

    This is a really cool video my dad flew e-2s in the navy back in the 80s and has always told me really cool stories of flying. Really cool to get to see a glimpse of what it was really like for him. I’ve always thought based on what he told me of the differences of flying things like the a-4 and the e-2 that you really had to be on top of things with the e-2 when landing because you have to work it so much more than the jets.

    Very impressive flying skills. I have always admired pilots who can land a plane on a postage stamp in the middle of an ocean! More importantly I admire and have the highest respect for those who serve in our armed forces. I thank you for your sacrifice and service to this Country. Many thanks for sharing this video!
