Yes in hannover. Sampras won, 36, 76,76, 67, 64, if I am not mistaken. A wonderful match
If Becker Had Won, It Would Have Been Perfect. He Also Played Spectacularly That Eve.

Pistol Pete and Boom Boom were my childhood heroes. I loved watching their games on the old fast carpet. Great memories.
Super tennis this is. Their Hannover atp final is one of the finest matches ever played . 96 was one of Becker’s years I think , he won the Australian open and still was awesome towards the end of his career and one of the most talented indoor players of all time , together with Sampras
Becker was probably the best player on indoor carpet.
Definitely the best Indoor player ever
He won the grand slam cup as well
Tennis players with charisma, personality ... a magnet to watch ... Becker's style of serving, with "ass", still inviolable today ... Pete's pistol with its grace, perfect second serve and perfect code on the net ... Poetry on the go two true legends ... 🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾🎾
so much more interesting than 2020 tennis matches
We've gone from one extreme to the other. Back then, there was a huge backlash against the "big servers" and how they were killing the game. It's one of the major reasons why the courts were slowed down - this is s highlights reel. Much of the rest of the match would have been very boring - ace after ace. It was a particular problem at Wimbledon. I remember one newspaper headline about the 1993 final: "Bored on the fourth of July".
@@th8257 I get your point, BUT back then you had 5 different court types. The clay season, where you had baseline play and long points like today, you had grass season where the spainards regularely skipped grass where a different type of style dominated (Sampras, Goran, Becker, Edberg, etc...), then hardcourt season, then carpet, then hard again in Australia etc....But now, the whole year seems like clay season! And because of that everybody plays the SAME!
All of these comments are spot-on. It's sad what's happened to tennis since the 80's. :(

Wow what a match legendary boris becker shows his class
When Becker was focused he was nearly impossible to beat.. He had everything as a player.. Underachieved considering the talent he had.
The problem with him is the inconsistency and also prone to injuries.
@@sudhakargummaraju3328 I think diving on hardcourts are injuries waiting to happen. The human body was not meant to dive onto cement even with thin rubber surfacing. It catches up with you.
He lost interest in tennis for his early years of huge success. If he focussed then the story was different.Neither Agassi Nor Sampras can better h2h record if he was focused.
How beautiful this was. Attack! Attack and more attack... Nowadays it’s who hits the hardest (and most topspin) from the backcourt.. 🙄
Federer play like them
One of Boris' best matches!!
Golden era for tennis: Edberg, Sampras, Becker, Lendl, Agassi and even good oldies like Jimbo & McEnroe still around!
Mats Willander and Jim Courier also played in 90s,there was Stich,Cash,Ivanisevich like players, far better than big 3 era.
@@arindambanerjee3326 agree!
Beckar was legend in tennis..no one is still like becker in tennis..he was my hero in tennis...I never watched tennis after becker....
Me too, from the Beginning until the End.
I remember to watch Wimbledon every Year. The Davis Cup Matches against the USA 1987 and he took our Flag after his Victory about Mcnroe God what a Moment.
No one lived this Sport so emotionally like Boris and he never gave up.
My Tennis Hero forever

It's why I never can say any player is GOAT just because of winning a lot. At the very top, there are many great players, each bringing something unique.
maybe the best match I have ever seen, wonderful net play, wonderful serves and returns
Great vid. The entrance, the match, the trophy... just wow.
Becker's topspin forehand was awesome to watch!
Funny, but the matches from this era are usually poor quality video. This, however, was fantastic to watch. Really appreciate this very much, thank you!
Often depends which country the TV video originated from. In those days, USA broadcasters (and I think Japan too) used a system called NTSC which had much lower picture quality. Europe (where this is obviously from) used a system called PAL which had noticeably higher picture quality. Think that explains a lot of it. American TV pictures in particular could be pretty awful back then.
F*ck me! What a match! Absollutely exhilarating!
Attack attack Attack- No margin for error, zero-sum, No prisoners
massive - no equal
OMG....I have always been a Becker fan. Never seen him play so well.
Mazumder: He played so well ALOT,
You weren’t watching. There are so many great matches
You probably didn't watch him in his peak years
@@notsohandytim5090 This level, which only he and Pete reached -Only on indoor hard. Was an underachiever really, Should have won a lot more, Outdoors
@@rehmenada5552 No, he'right.Boris was "alongwith Pete" the greatest ever in indoor ccarpet/hard.Is masters and grand slams outdoors, were competitive, he never reached this level.
This level, and their other matche indoor hard, nobody else could compete with them. That was not the case outdoors where Becker was concerned
Oh I miss this kind of tennis no boring baseline pushing
One of the greatest Matches I ever seen. Great Tennis, Great Players
what a match. two the best two servers of all time,
Sampras and Becker fought so many times and every one of them are masterpieces.
Two of the best. Fierce competitors. Great serve and volley players.
I always like becker vs sampras instead of agassi vs Sampras
an great groundstrokes…
Back in Serve and Volley Times. I Love this Style of Tennis so much. So sad serve and Volley died on the ATP espacialy in Wimbledon.
Could not agree more :(
Why can't you play S&V today in the pro tour?
@@ManuelBedacarratzslow courts, racket head sizes are bigger hence returning is way easier, nowadays people are way more athletic, etc
@@Flootyy True. However, SV isn't taught as much as they used to, so it's like a dying art. Sampras played Federer in 2007 in an exhibition - which was super close - and he did SV effectively, and by 2007 nobody was doing it.
My point is, it could be a great addition to the game these days, at least mixing it up more.
@@ManuelBedacarratz oh it definitely works. i just think it cant be your whole game because nowadays it's way easier to counter it; not as reliable. federer used it occasionally in his final years due to it being easier to counter. i agree it should be used more, especially on anything lower than ATP.
Huge serves. And big groundstrokes.
These are the beasts of tennis days gone by. All court play mixed with serve and volley. Their tool bags were full and they knew how to use every tool.
I have watched this video sevral times but still dont get bored
what a fantastic match. i saw the complete match on your tennis-classics-channel.
Das waren noch die goldenen Zeiten im Tennis
Ist das lange her. Boris gegen Pete. Das ATP Finale 1996 in Hannover zwischen diesen beiden war eines der besten Spiele, die je statt gefunden haben. Sowas kommt nicht wieder.
5:39 what a Fight with action class ending for Boom Boom.
Just brilliant. Thanks so much for this.
Becker is a complete player ! He has everything in his armory to play magical tennis. But Sampras was very tough guy to beat !
Watching this exciting match in 2024. Feeling Blessed!
amazing match 2 legends of the tennis sport
That's when Becker was still a happy camper. He turned into a real basket case shortly after this and he was never the same again.
Greatest era in Tennis. The level of competition was just different.
Due grandissimi campioni del Tennis.
Grazie.
Those were the days, Boris and Pistol two most entertaining players of their time
More from the 90s, please :)
Becker-Sampras had an awesome rivalry in the 90s. It doesn’t get the attention it should. They had fantastic matches, especially indoors on the fast carpet. They had a couple of awesome matches later that year at the ATP Finals in ‘96 as well
Sampras always stated that Becker was the toughest opponent he faced.

13 TIMES H2H INDOORS - BB LEADS 7-6
It's beginning to get more recognition now, especially their Hannover 96 match
*Back then, when Serve & Volley was the norm...*
Edit: Agree absolutely it was all court tennis back then. I just wanted to emphasise that most of the points were won using the serve and volley tactic.
When men played the game.
They played all court tennis, beautiful baseline and groundstrokes as well.
unlike pre 2001 grass, most indoor carpet was actually faster than grass and despite the low bounce was consistent enough to promote long rallies. the Stuttgart surface was actually quite rough and medium.speed which was slower for carpet
Awesome match and editing
Becker was awesome, he was really strong on grass, and indoors, if you count only the matches he played indoors and on grass, he has a negative head to head only against Sampras with a margin of 2. (7-9) All the other matchups of his were a tie or a better h2h. That shows how efficient was BB in these circumstances
And then Agassi learned to watch Boris's tongue during service games...*sigh.
Becker was past his peak after 1991 and was 3-4 years elder to Sampras. A peak Becker vs peak Sampras would have been almost equal. People ignore the fact that Becker's peak was the most competitive era in Tennis, the 80s, with Lendl, Edberg, Wilander, Cash, still good McEnroe, and lot more. 90s had just Sampras and Agassi, between 96 to 2000, Sampras didn't see any competition at all
@@rehmenada5552 did you copy&past that bs on all Becker videos? Jeez...
Becker's brilliant backhand :)
no one could not beat becker when he was at his best injury was his problem
And sleeping pills...
Super legendary match of tennis world of all time !
Boom Boom Boris vs. Pistol Pete. Tennis just can't get any better than this.
Godlike status Becker got from the German public.
Bring back those courts and the BO5 rule in a Masters final.
Yes, I agree. in some of them. there should be 2-3 finals of these tournaments. you can draw lots before the season.
but especially the final at the atp finals (london) has to be best of five.
Wow nice match up. Actually it was of the highest order.
The sheer aesthetic beauty and majesty of the 1HBH.
Boris!!! this is heaven
Sampras and Becker play Amazing Game Tennis
What a wonderful match

Vielleicht der eleganteste und geschmeidigste Tennisspieler in der Geschichte dieser Sportart....
Thanks very nice
My hero!
Absolute legends
What a match!
Super!!!!!!!🎉
Becker is my best. His single backhand is the most beautiful than any other players.
Das waren noch Zeiten!
Great player
Sublime tennis
👏👏👏👏
That Sampras passing shot was the greatest backhand I have ever seen watching tennis since I have watched since 1980.
Becker war einzigartig, voll fokussiert, taktisch brillant, der Held meiner Jugend.
Both Becker and Sampras had really good serves. But Becker's serve bounced so much higher, making it that much more difficult to return.
Quel super match de becker ça n'a pas pris une ride😮
Super match
Damn close serve to finish the match.
War ein Top Match. ✌✌
Great performance by Becker but Sampras got the next victory in a epic five set battle at ATP finals (Hanover).
Becker actually got the next victory in Hanover in group stages and then Sampras beat him days later in the final
@@markhayden4965 i know but i meant the final of course 😜
The Hanover match was unbelievable. I wanted Becker to win. Sampras edged him. Two great power serve and volley players.
@@michaelgarza8271 I thought Becker played better but Sampras was more clutch. The third set tiebreak was very cagey with three mini breaks, which led to Becker double faulting at a critical moment, leaving Sampras to serve out the set with an ace out wide and a backhand passing shot off a Becker chip charge.
@@suatkayatennis in that tiebreak there was a sampras forehand that was out, but blinfmd referee didnt call it, and sampras got the point. in a match that close, that could have been the difference
So sad that he had this shit injury in Wimbledon in that year. He was in such an amazing shape. Best Becker ever in 1996.
He was still past his prime. 1989 was his best year
good job
Sometimes I wish that there would have been a bigger overlap of the era of the greats of the 90th and the GOATs. Then we could have really see how they match up against each other.
Back when it was best of five
Boris at his best majestic to watch❤
das war damals in den 90er Jahren, da gab es noch das leckere Aquarius in den blauen Dosen und das Isostar in den schmalen Dosen zu trinken! sooo gut war das Zeug! hab ich immer getrunken und Tennis geschaut!

Awesome
It was the only time Becker defeated Sampras in a Final
Becker's backhand won him the match.
Just count how many players with single handed backhands left in today's tennis, and you will surely say serve and volley has become extinct. It's a pity.
Both Sampras and Becker could smash the ball. This video really don’t show it but this ball flying. Two heavy weights
Becker on carpet was almost unbeatable. Most entertaining player ever.
5:39, I'm guessing that the 5th set will also be 6-3
you guessed wrong. you are the biggest loser ever
wow sampras & becker
THE BEST BORIS BECKER....
to win a final against a sampras on hard court is quite something. extraordinary! a pity that the stadium wasn't packed. boris and sampras never had such a mass following like a Federer (who is and will be the most loved, revered, admired, and remembered tennis player of all time). Thanks Tennistv for the share!!
Becker was at his best on the indoor court, this victory ended the 21-match winning streak of the world’s No. 1 player, the longest streak that year.
Boom Boom!
6:37 stopped exactly when the ball was about to hit another ball
Good to see Sampras lose every once in a while.
Yes. Human after all.
No it's not.
Becker at his best would be a handful for any player in history
