If you look at the third throw of the dice, 1st one at 3:03 (falls normal and the bowl is in the middle of the white pad) - 2nd roll 3:09 (falls normal and the bowl is in the middle of the white pad) 3rd roll at 3:25 (Derren put the bowl on the top right of the pad, it clearly has a magnet under it) and when the dice fall, watch how they stick to the ground. There is a magnet under the right side of the white pad. These are loaded dice, set to roll 45
*The number 45 was pre-chosen* Derren probably pre-chose this number in relation to the hosts date of birth first. So he had the number 45... and he chose a mathematical oddity surrounding the number 45.
So how does he get 45 rice? It was palmed.
At 6:26 he doesn't have the rice in his right hand (this is 100%) the camera cuts away at 6:30. You see his right hand at 6:32 and it becomes clenched. I think he has some type of delivery system up his sleeve and the rice just dropped in to his hand. At 6:36 his right hand is closed. At 6:38 he opens up his hand but only opens his first two fingers. The 45 rice is cupped in his last two fingers.
When he grabs the rice, he doesn't pick any of it up and when he pours the rice out at 6:40 he is pouring out the 45 rice that he has already cupped in his right hand. Pretty dam tricky and hardly noticeable.

Yup. Shook a few in bowl with two fingers.....had the 45 grains already cupped in hand. Also....he practiced numbers from 11 to 66 (all possible Die combinations rolled), that whatever number was chosen, he used a 16 place number grid, or magic square, where n=4, Discrete Mathematics (different formulas for differing amounts of squares) and knew what numbers to write for '45' to equal same number (Magic Sum = 's') in any of those combinations. Like he said, he knows math and mastered it as applied to many tricks, in this case where n=4 of a magic square. Impressive memory, but that's why he is a professional. He had to know big boys birth date to calculate ahead of time all possible combos with birth date on bottom row, and adjusted numbers accordingly. Still impressive memorizing all that, and quickly based on number chosen at the moment. But that's one of his specialty's/gifts.

Very professionally presented, and very entertaining. And finally, the numbers can be memorised using a trick from Derren's book, "Tricks of the Mind": Lice alight on the lace of my shoe, etc. Just can't resist the temptation to have go at explaining it..

In recreational mathematics that is called a magic square. At 6:36 you can see Darren is palming the 45 rice and only uses 2 fingers to pretend to get the rice out of the bowl then drops it back in and afterwards turns his hand sideways to drop the 45 grains out of his palm. The only hard part is to get the dice to roll the 45 in the first place. Each roll only has a 1/6 chance to get to 4 and also for the 5, so 1/6 x 1/6 = 1/36 chance. He got it on the 3rd roll so that was a 3/36 chance or 1/12th chance to get it....but he could have gone a few times to get a better chance, but that was pretty lucky. The greatest part is to take these to very basic things a magic square and a simple palm and turn it into this amazing trick. Love it!

OK, I’m proud of the fact that I caught one thing. He had the 45 grains of rice pre-loaded. Pretty easy to see when you look.

He has actually only done two little tricks that any decent magician could do: 1) Forced a "selection" (in this case a number) on someone & 2) Basic sleight of hand; the rest is window-dressing. He starts by knowing JC's birthday, adds the date together to get 45, build and memorises a number grid based on the number 45 of which one line is JC's birthday, all well in advance of the show, then it is simply a matter of convincing JC that they are randomly using the number 45. Pushing a number etc on someone, in this case 45, is bread and butter to magicians; the rest is memorised well before hand. The rice is a different trick, basic sleight of hand, and actually proves that Derren knew the number 45 was to be used before they started if that wasn't obvious enough already.

yeh i see it now, first two rolls the bowl was further over near the clip, then the third roll he placed it down firmly on the far corner of the pad then you can see the dice jiggle and collide so was magnetized. very clever.

The dice are electronically loaded, meaning a remote switch changes them from standard to fixed.
They're very expensive but a good investment for a wealthy illusionist to generate a random number.
