- A lot of people ask me if there's a controller you should play mkwii with. So I decided to make a video to help you understand the strengths and weaknesses of each option.

Or the drawing pad
Technically wii wheel is the best and we all just suck.
Yeah no mention of the diagonal inputs that make wii wheel technically superior.
I always use the wheel
@@campbellblock3061 but that's technical, for me as i have big hands it does not feel nice in the slightest. I use the Wiimote and Nunchuk still not super comfortable but makes it easier to use
@@illford6921 Yeah either nunchuck or cc is the most popular I believe. Almost nobody who plays seriously uses wheel because of the difficulty in controlling the directional inputs. The only use for the unique diagonals are for mushroom gorge glitch time trials.
Oh someone is talking now phew I love wii wheel
i’ve been playing wheel since the games release. doesn’t really effect me except in really precise time trials :)
Ay, a true wheeler
ArcIntel love ur videos man
I've actually been playing MK for 8 years, I use the Wii Wheel. But that doesn't mean I'm good. I started playing when I was three, so I don't count about 5 of those years. I'm getting a CC soon, and I'm not too sure what to expect from it.
@@isabelladgriff gl! I'm rooting for you!
So... Uhm... Am I a weird person beacause I'm good with the Wii wheel?
I use the Wii remote, no wheel. That extra plastic attachment is useless.
wheel is not happy with you 😤
tbh yeah
OH REALLY
Ok
I tried playing online without a wheel when I was used to the wheel, surprisingly got 3rd out of 9
arcintel: play every other controller than wheel

i love the wheel :(

BUT WHEEL IS BEST
I do too
Golden wheels by your name mean your god tier
The wheel is great but whenever I trick I hit my jaw
Edit: wow this blew up a year later idk why tho XD
OML Be careful!
I dont lol i love it to i have use the wii wheel sice 2015
LOL
You’re not supposed to hold it that high up. If you’re sitting in an upright position I would recommend holding it slightly above your lap and not so close to your body.
I'm ashamed to say I have done this, I was going against my sister and was really into it and flicked my wheel up and smacked myself in the jaw
4:26 *his pointer finge....ouch*
it's actually not that painful once you get use to it

pointer finger claw grip is honestly really comfortable and natural; started developing it when playing with an xbox controller on dolphin and it works really well
Imagine having to grab your controller in a weird way to play optimally [This comment was made by the native wii wheel users]
Wheel gang wheel gang
To be honest until recently I didn’t know any different and I learnt to play when I was like 6
Imagine having a wireless controller, GCN gang
Imagine shaking a controller for an action that could be mapped more comfortably to a button. This post made by gamecube gang.

I'm proficient in Wheel, GCN, and Nunchuk, but I feel like despite the lack in precision, the Wheel is the most fun controller
have to agree with you on that, the wheel is fun
@@Arcintel I play casually and wheel is a good controller
as it's the ONLY controller lying about
in 50cc
in pros ur dead
the wheel because of motion controls is actually the most pecise controller if you use it well. you can not control how sharp you turn easily on joystick, same sharpness each time, motion controls you have exact control of the turn angle, giving wheel pros an undeniable advantage.
hello K41 from 3 years ago
I used the wii wheel for every grand prix for every cc including mirror mode. And then when my friends came over, they wanted to use the wheel so I used the gamecube controller for the first time and felt like an idiot for not using the gamecube from the very start
5:17 THOSE LINES THO.
XD There's a reason I don't play wheel
How do you get that skin on Funky Kong? Like, is it a mod, and do other players see it?
@@dongy7297 It's a custom texture made for CTGP, only the player who has it enabled can see it.

I don't care what other people think, the wheel is my comfort zone
True
Playing on Rainbow Road with the Wii Wheel for me is horrible!
I used the wheel for about 8 years and then I used the nunchak for a month and got a lot better.
All the particularly difficult tricks that I couldn't do became easy.
Analog drastically changes the style of play and the ease of many tricks such as gap jumps and BC3 glitches.
I recommend the nunchak very much ^^
MKWii is still active?
I'm so proud.
I personally use the N64 controller
Are you joking??? That sounds horrid!
@@TrevorRS05 yes it's a joke 😆
Phew
Ive actually tried it, quite interesting
Funny guy 😂
All sweaty tryhards play "claw" to have more control over their vehicle while airborne
I learned CCP claw from the very beginning actually, I don't know how to play normal CCP 😅
@@Arcintel same
Dude claw is used much more in other games not just Mario kart. Claw is super popular in everything
This may be weird, but I like using a PS2 controller with a PS2 to GCN adapter
It works rather well actually
Bro, you threw me off with your pfp. Had me thinking I found one of my old comments😛
I personally use the gamecube controller. Maybe I just have a big thumb, but I can simultaneously have my thumb on the d-pad and the analog stick. And unfortunately, you still do need batteries to use the wiimote to select the ctgp revolution channel on the wii menu.
You can install bootmii and start at the Homebrew channel. I've not turned on my Wii remote in weeks
Kjeld really? But if you start at the hombrew channel, you still have to control with your wiimote
@@BigSmoke-xh5hi No, You can use a GameCube controller in the Homebrew Channel, you just need to use the DPad
I’m weird.
I’m a competitive mkw player and I use motion controllers with only the Wii remote xD
I also play a lot of time trails, on snes ghost valley two I have a 53.4 :P
Edit - I’ve been playing since 2010 btw
I only use the Wii remote too haha
I’ve been playing with just the wii remote since the game came out and today I decided to finally switch to the nunchuck. Got the hang of it pretty quickly and Got new pb’s on four different tracks today lol.
Holy crap, 1k subs?? Someone give this guy a subscriber! You're editing skills are AMAZING! Keep it up.
I recently tried Mario kart Wii with my gamecube controller and I’ve loved it. Prior to that I used to just use the Wii remote with the Wii classic controller attached to it
Im getting a ccp. So thank you this is gonna defently help me
GL with your CCP adventures!
I really like cc/ccp claw, it is more comfortable than people think
@@Arcintel The GameCube Controller has the advantage of not requiring batteries.
@@drmarioprojectm1510 but the disadvantage of a worse claw grip
5:19 that is me and that is so sad
Nevermind I found a nunchuk in the house now I play with nunchuk. Slipdrifting is a problem for me tho.
Nunchuck in the House: Friday nights at seven on Disney Channel
I used to play with the nunchuck, but since I picked the game back up, I've been using the gcn controller because I don't want to deal with dead batteries. I don't feel I have as great of control with the gcn as I did with the nunchuck.
Takes time dude, still adjusting to ccp and it's been more then a month
I genuinely didn't know you could use nunchuck! That came as a massive surprise but tbh I was a bit curious how all the og players played it...
I main the Wii Remote + Nunchuk because of how faster it feels. I used to main the GameCube Controller until I found out in one race that I actually outrunned everyone and almost passed through the racer in 12th place when using the Nunchuk. I am already used to all the control schemes, so switching is very easy (aside from the Wii Remote only) but the Nunchuk feels simpler and I am very good with it.
The GCN and GCNCC players like me have mastered the claw and it's quite fun when u get used to it
if you play on dolphin, i recommend mapping accelerate to the right trigger and tricks to the right stick, that way you can still accelerate turn and trick/wheelie at the same time
Nice tip!
This was a lot of help, appreciated
Is that a Deadmau5 music on a background ?? Love your vids man ! Very helpful !!
Interesting video. I use nunchuk but have a ccp so I might try it out. Also in 2014 when I played casual I used Wii wheel but I can't even use it anymore XD
I didn't even know clawing was a thing. The problem you highlighted has never been an issue to me. I've just been doing what you do without realising it.
I've been playing this game for 9 years and I didn't know that there are different types of tricks until I saw this video.
...I've got a lot to learn.
I use a grip you didnt mention but it works really well (for GCN). I put my right thumb on the d-pad, my middle finger on the R button and index finger on the A button. I hold my index finger against the a button sort of sideways, so it kinda hurts, but it works well because A is almost always held down.
If your playing GCN controller, just curl your right index finger over the "a" button and use your right thumb to press the arrow pad. You will have to use your right middle finger to hop as well. I find this the most efficient way of using the GCN controller, because you have ever button covered.
Yes all those controls I recommend to give a go, I think anyone starting the game should get a pro controller because in my early days, the pro controller is what made me master Coconut Mall Time Trials. While at one time I did use the Pro Controller, I use a Wii Wheel. But I'm definitely ready to use the Pro Controller in online races as they can be challenging.
Just now seeing this. I used to use the nunchuck for MKW until I learned it's possible to use the GameCube controller. That became my main controller for as long as I had the game and I always used the "claw" technique for every game I played (I didn't know it was a real technique until I got older) so it was easy for me to steer and trick on Mario Kart Wii. I can understand why it so hard for people to master it as some people tried to copy me.
"The Claw"
MGS/MH players: I've seen this one before, it's a classic!
i actually started clawing with the classic controller by nature, it just seems like the best option for me
5:03 this is why I use the GCN. I even modded my Wii so that I can launch the game with just the GCN lol
You remember the Wired Fight Pad? That one third-party CCP that was in the style of a GCN controller, that was made for Smash 4?
I've been playing MKWii with it, and holy crap, I need a new controller.
My first time playing Mario Kart Wii was with the Wii Wheel, but I haven't played with it ever since I got the GameCube controller since it seemed much easier to play MKWii with. But for Wii Wheel pros, I congratulate you! 🎖️
I have a Classic Controller that is in the shape of a GameCube controller.
I like the compromise
I recently got a GCN because my GCN-shaped CCP hurt my fingers with the tiny bumpers used to item and hop. If your wondering, the L on the CCP is where there's the Z on GCN but on the left and R is where Z is and ZR does the function of Z but is where R is on GCN.
I have two of them, a Mario and a Peach one. My Mario one stopped working so i shell swapped my Mario and peach one, and when i was doing so I broke the Mario right z button, so why not use the peach z button? I used it and it works!
Thank god the d-pad actually works
I have a GameCube controller that is in the shape of a Classic Controller.
I am a GCN player and, yes, clawing is super awkward at first, but with practice it starts to feel natural.
I've never played with nunchuk or CC but I feel GCN is the best just because it doesn't require a wiimote
Instead of clawing the GCN you can use the right thumb for the dpad and your index to press a. Took me a long time to get used to it but it works for me.
Ive never heard of the ccp or clawing at all. Thanks for this video!
5:04 I use a wavebird controller XD. Doesn't apply to me really.
I have played with the weew for like 5-8 year but i changed to nunchuck for a 2 months and its much easyer
Great production quality!
I play Mixed Claw in GCN, while my bro plays Nunchuck and my dad bare Wiimote.
Even with that (and him playing automatic) he still beats us from time to time! It's amazing tbh he's as good as he is for playing Automatic Wiimote
Maybe one day we will be able to change our controls in CTGP. That would be a cool feature
I played wheel for a long time but I switched to nunchuck so I know both.
keep up the great videos my man
I have largely only played mkwii with the wheel. And let me tell you, in the beginning, it was not pretty. I was constantly crashing into walls and it was really hard, and that kinda discouraged me, but I kept at it. And it took me literal years to be able to get precise movements with it and not be veering out of control constantly. But wow is it worth it, because once you get the hang of it, it feels so good. To be able to accomplish those precise inputs and and to flex on people when you beat them with wheel, totally worth it.
Though I love the classic controller pro the controls for tricks throw me off and is hard to get used to so I stick with the nunchuck
I use wheel because nunchuck hurts my hand and hell no I'm not going to trick with the freaking d pad. Also I use kart so it doesn't matter that wheelies are really awkward.
I use nunchuck on tracks that are oriented around lines, and some of the best time trailers like Luke, Fox and Totem use it. On tracks oriented about chaining wheelies I use the GCN controller, since that controller is more comfortable for me to use compared to the pro controller. :P
When I started playing Mario Kart Wii I only used the wii wheel and I used it for about 5 years so I got pretty good at it. However, when I took a 3 year break from the game and came back, trying to use the wii wheel was a nightmare, so I switched to using the nunchuck and wii remote.
This could be 20 seconds
Virtual Boy
I used to always play Wii wheel when I was younger but then I switched to nunchuck and now can't operate the Wii wheel to save my life
I have playing with the wheel for 5 years, today I switched to the nunchuck and it's much better Imao
Also soon I'm getting a ccp. Good video dude!
I used to use wheel when I first played the game because it was the only way I knew of, I got decent at it then I was racing my dad, and he was using nunchuk. He tried to get me to use it because 'motion controls bad' pretty much, it took AGES to convince me to try it but once I did I never looked back.
(also I genuinely didn't know about the directional trick thing, I have been doing up tricks only my entire life, thanks for that)
So your saying the controller i must choose is the Wheel? I guess it makes sense 🤔
ive always found gc mixgripping plenty of fun and relatively easy to do
Same!
Growing up I used just the Wii remote, and omg, it is SO uncomfortable. I recently started playing mk wii again, (this channel has been super helpful) and I’m using the nunchuk now, and what a difference it makes :D
I’ve used the regular motion controller for 8 years and it definitely helps to take the wheel off and use the controller bare
Don't forget that nearly all wr's in Mushroom Gorge is with the Wii Wheel!
*Glitch time, I'll explain more in a mg vid
Great videos.
Keep it up! Maybe we can find the time for a colab? :b

In my opinion, I feel that the Wii remote like the literal remote that looks like a PS five kinda is really good and definitely GameCube is the one the best designs and feels so good in your hands
I've been using the Wii Wheel for 3 years now. It's really not that bad if you spend a lot of time with it. I can do wheelies and tricks consistantly. My only problem with it is that the inside drift bikes can't turn in the air, which is a problem on a lot of tracks. Therefore, I use karts on the harder tracks and bikes on the easier tracks. I do have a Classic Controller Pro, but I don't use it because of how I have to use my left hand to both drift and do wheelies/tricks.
I use gamecube controller and it's easy
That's me ed win 9k player
I use HORI’s wired fight pad. It looks like a gcn, but has analog triggers, nunchuck sticks, and Nintendo character designs.
I’ve been playing a wheel since the game released. It feels good to play with, although slipdrifts and chain wheelies are hard to pull off with it.
Why is the D-Pad for tricking? That's so dumb, I hate that!!
That's why in 7/8/8 Deluxe you use the same button you use to drift to trick
Bro! You got nunchuck sticks in your ccp?
Also: CCP>All
That's right! The CCP's thumbsticks are actually the same as the nunchuck, and for my GCN I played melee before mkwii competitively, and it was ok to do things like swap the sticks and raise the triggers, so I did so XD
Nice! I used white nunchuck sticks on one of my ccps only because I wanted it to match my custom paint job. But taller sticks are nice for smash as well.
Estaba buscando este video, gracias por ayudarme a tomar la decision correcta xd
I’ve been using the wheel when I was younger, and now I’m using the classic controller set-up on my Dolphin emulator, kinda like the classic better, but I grew up with the wheels, so I wanna use both :’)
I have literally been using the wii wheel for 6 yrs and i can use it better than twd98
Wii mote WITHOUT the Wii wheel us best...
Nah jk ccp is best
No. Your first statement is correct
No. Cc/ccp is best
As a casual player I’ve always gone for the Wii remote and Nunchuck, it’s just always worked for me. It’s wireless, I don’t have to use the D pad for tricks, and I’m use to it. I don’t think it’s good competitively though which is fine because I’m not a competitive player
Yeah, I tried game cube controller for a bit, but the d pad is just so stupidly small and hard to use so I've been playing on Wii wheel ever since. Once you get used to the motion controls they actually give you a lot of freedom. But yes you can't turn the wheel as fast as you can move a little joy stick but for MKW I don't think it makes that big of a difference at beginning and intermediate level.
I tried the nunchuck one time because I was tired of the wheel and now I pretty much mastered it
Surprisingly I mastered the wheel after a few years. I tried nunchucks but I didn’t like it, my coordination was funny so I preferred the wheel.
I never had issues with inputs until the controller and what not became aged.
I just love the Smash Bros. footage you chose
I’m planning on getting a classic pro controller myself! It looks like it’s gonna be a little tough to race with. I’m use to having the left joystick on the top and the Dpad on the bottom like Xbox and PlayStation controllers have.
I just straight up main the wiimote for everything I'm not talking nunchuck + wii just straight up only wiimote. Or in general just any xbox controller (even a duke controller if the analog stick somehow isn't worn to oblivion and wonky and bad) interesting video!
I remember I mastered rainbow road when I was 5 with a sideways Wii remote by itself. I didn't know any other controllers were available so I got used to it.
I really don't know how to 'block' (it's more like reducing damage) a POW. When you shake the wheel during the animation of the pow you can kind of keep your momentum. You can do tricks with the d-pad but it doesn't work for the pow.
My preferred choice will always be Ol' Reliable, my old Gamecube controller from 2003. Been with me from Double Dash through to 8 Deluxe.
I play with nunchuck because I can’t play claw for the life of me. Also my GCN and CCP are old and tend to drift sometimes. I also played with the Wii wheel from 2008-2018 so with tricks and wheelies being mapped to motion controls I can focus more on alignments
I used to use my wheel.
But then I have a huge attachment towards my gcn control. Like it was the first console I ever got, so when I found I could use my favourite control. I use that, plus with homebrew and nindont I can play or restore old games I lost.
i come back to this video every month
Started playing ctgp again after almost 6 years.
I have been using the wii wheel since I started playing and I’m thinking of switching to a controller as when I am time trialing it is very difficult to do a quick series of movements without messing it up
I once challenged myself to use the Wii laser zapper that you would use for call of duty for MKWii and it actually works, though not very comfortably
I have spent my entire life using the wheel accessory. I have raced about 2,000 races on my account that I have had for less than half my life. And on my other account about another 1,000. And I’ve had brothers so I spent a good thousand games as player two. If I even tried switching controllers I would fail miserably.
I don't honestly know how to do all the fancy drift types with the wii wheel, but...I have been using the wii wheel ever since I got mkwii (which was my first mk title). So, I'll probably stick to wheel, but learning the different drifts is gonna be hard xD
Thank god. I bought the second wii edition and thought that I wasn’t able to use external controllers on it. Luckily you can put them in the WiiMote
