  • How to repair the flex PCB on a Roland JD800 synthesiser. These flexible PCB’s are no longer made and they can easily become broken where it connects to another flex cable. Here I show how it can be repaired and the connector flex pcb replaced with a ribbon cable, with a more robust connection. The tracks on the keyboard flex PCB can not be soldered to. I know because I tried. So the repair as shown in one of my earlier video can’t be done on this. Instead I use conductive silver glue/ink to make the electrical connections. It worked well.
    Here is the silver conductive glue:

    Thanks - the idea of using a pin to measure the connection of the plastic PCB is really helpful as I think I have one wire to replace and I wasn't sure if it is the top or the bottom connections that are at fault.

    I've started creating a replacement, first prototype works a treat and first run went really well.

    Thank you so much for this video as I have a prized JD 800 of great sentimental value which started playing up in a weird way when playing the keyboard. Initially it was throwing out full velocity on some keys as well as cutting off bass notes when I started playing chords in the upper octaves. I have never done any tech work before but decided to bite the bullet and dismantle the JD and clean the contacts on the assembly board underneath, which I did with Isopropyl alcohol. This did not fix the dead keys even after removing loads of gunk. In fact the problem got worse because now I completely lost the bottom two octaves! However, by pressing down on the plastic clip joining the two ribbon cables the operatives came back. So, with Deoxit at the ready to clean the contacts on exactly this join/point you are showing in the video. Needless to say the contact ripped apart and after consultation with a friend of mine we decided that it was worth trying to find a method to fix it.
    I have absolutely no experience in electronics so my question is-do you still undertake this kind of work and if “yes” what would be the charge?
    I ask in case my own efforts may never see the light of day. Thank you again for a fantastic video that really gives some hope to what was initially a hopeless situation. All the best!

    Nice repair - I just did almost exactly the same thing on a Roland KR-500; similar flexible thin-film connector at each end of the same keyboard assembly but only 16 connections each on these ones thank goodness. Perhaps the most challenging repair I've done for a long while. All the best from Christchurch New Zealand.

    I did the same and it worked fine… just need to be very precise and patient. :)

    FWIW I was able to fix my connector by carefully peeling back about 1/4" of the blue plastic covering to reveal fresh leads, carefully scraping with a sharp blade to clean the leads off completely (I used a high powered soldering magnifying glass for this work), then reinstalling it by taking it up further towards the mating location and putting some new holes in for the mounting bracket to attach to. This results in a thinner area under the mounting bracket since the (graphite?) original leads are significantly thicker. I solved this putting some paper between the mounting bracket and the plastic cable. Its not the prettiest fix but its solid. I noticed that Guy Wilkinson has a replacement available, which the perfectionist in me wants to get but oh boy... I am loathe to get back into that keybed after so much work (it had red glue as well aaand I managed to warp my keys so it was _quite_ the task getting this keybed working).

    As precise as neurosurgery ...
    Im' a owner of a JD 800.
    Three, four times, I tried to fix some defectives keys, always the same , it works for some month and failed again...
    I don't knows if it is a problem coming from the contact between the grey silicone switches and the green long PCB little black dots, they are all very clean, the grey silicone contacts are clean and in good shape, the surfaces contacts on the green PCB are clean, very neat.
    Why does it works for a time and fail again ?
    Does I have to look for a problem of connectivity that you expose in your clever repair ?
    I'm lost and i love my JD 800 !
    An other problem is the sensitivity of some switches, they are : inc/yes dec/no and page up/ down, left/ right, I have to push them very firmly before it respond to my command ...
    Of course, since this summer, I have the red glue but simple problem so solve with a cleaning bath of sodium hydroxid.
    I need a good cleaning for some linear potentiometer, it's a long but easy job to do with diesel and ear cotton tips!
    Thank you.

      Common problems from what I read. Maybe measure the resistance of the keys that press on the green pcb to make a connection. They may be worn and have a high resistance, a bit like the common keys on TV remote controls wear out. See another video on my channel on fixing remote control buttons for a fix. Silver ink on the key part may be worth a try.

    THANK YOU. I pretty much would have done the same thing as you to start with ie trying to solder to that flimsy PCB and burning a hole thru it hehe. You have saved me a lot of guesswork. Such a disgraceful design by Roland

    Congrats. Very insighfull video! As you have the experience may I ask if it would work if you tried to "recreate the missing tracks on the small flex with silver glue and then clamp back parhaps adding some more glue on the keyboard flex contacts? This way could save some effort.

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Před 5 lety

      I thought that initially too, but it turned out too difficult due to the many fine tracks and so i then turned to the wiring in method as shown.

    Have anyone come across a circuit diagram of the pcb. Would come in handy to measure if you have connection problems from one end to the other. I found a service manual which also describes the test mode you can use, for testing each key. Press cursor keys < and > sim. and hit the EXIT button to enter test mode, then press Exit + the lower bank 3 button to enter keyboard test mode.

  • @spyridonstouraitis8530

    Hello great repair but why you used silver glue instead of soldering?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Před 5 lety +3

      I tried soldering but it doesn’t work. The tracks on the flexi pcb are very thin tin or the like and the tracks just atomise off when trying to solder on them.

    I have a question, how to repair if it is a carbon type of flex cable

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Před 3 lety

      You have to trace if back to where it joins to a solderable point, much like in this video as the keyboard pcb tracks on the roland are not solderable.

      @@comeinhandynow so it can be repaired?

    • @comeinhandynow
      @comeinhandynow  Před 3 lety

      @@gonzaleschristiandanielr.8532 yes probably. Easy if you can find a solderable joint somewhere on the end of the track somewhere else to join to. If not silver ink is an option to join to the track.
