  • It's a hot debate everywhere- are these standard box awnings on imported hybrid caravans any good? Do I need to spend thousands on upgrading? If so, which one do I get? The questions go on. In this video, we share our experience with standard awnings over approximately 18 months and 1 and a half laps of Australia. We have had our awnings up in all sorts of variable conditions, from winds to torrential rain, to just about whatever you can throw at it. We've found it really comes down to how well you set these things up and spend ing that little bit extra time on setup day, that gives you peace of mind for the whole camp duration. We step through our tips/hacks to ensure you have the best chance of getting good value from the standard awning.

    I don't have a Jawa brand camper trailer, but pretty much all hybrids are the same, fundamentally, and this awning set-up video is the best I've seen. We've just sold one hybrid and have another on order and were tossing up whether to stick with the supplied awning or go for some aftermarket wing thing. You've convinced us to stick with the supplied awning and if we encounter a problem down the track we can always change it later. Well done guys, keep these type of videos coming.

      Cheers guys! Just last night we got completely unforecast and unrelenting winds out of Exmouth, consistent gusts up to I’d say 60km/h, starting at 2am! I knew if I pulled the ground pegs that it would more than likely wrap over the top of the van, so just grit my teeth and hoped for the best….. the bloody thing didn’t move even though it copped 6 hours of it

    We tossed up this awning or the 270 for our Jawa.
    I like the standard awning as it’s a one person job and reasonably quick to pack up if the weather suddenly turns. But we ended up going for the 270 purely for the amount of protection from the front (fridge) all the way to the back which is handy for the Ziggy and also cover for the fold out bed. Heaps of cover from tip to toe for us but it’s purely horses for courses.
    Another great video from you two, I always watch em😊

    Great video (as usual). Is there any way you could adapt the winding handle which extends the awning so that it can be extended using your electric drill? I use my drill on my winches on my camper trailer - just saves a bit of time.

      I have thought of it mate, but I’ve stuffed a few mechanisms in my time using drills when they are designed for hand use (coffee grinder, stabiliser legs etc)

    How appropriate. Maiden trip with our new hybrid this Anzac weekend. Sorry not a Jawa. 4 days at Cobdogla. Awning much the same thanks for the tips. Cannot understand how Mavo didn't get a gratuitous 10 secands holding a random pole for you! 😊

    I have a Thule awning (similar style). Worst awning ever. Roll out awnings are by far the best, especially when a storm hits.

    They break very easy especially the plastic pin that holds the leg to the pin .

    Great video, our awning (SWAG hybrid), is pretty much identical. I use the same pegs, have found they are really good, only time I have had issues is when the ground is fairly saturated, and they pull out. Otherwise they are great. Have you figured out a way you can clean the vinyl on the top of the awning?
    I used our anti flap kit once, needed a bottle of whisky to recover! I’ve found the curved rafter alone is sufficient to prevent pooling. I only realised the importance of the rafter during a trip to the Old Grafton Road, we had a sudden heavy downpour, the awning nearly collapsed.

    Great tips. Does the middle curved bar come with the Jawa? Do you know if you can buy those anywhere? We're looking at curved bars now and like that style much better

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hey! Yeah they do come standard with the Jawa as they are for the annex setup. They’re Supapeg branded, so definitely think you could source them. They are really good and don’t need any brackets or latches to secure them into place

    Hi, I’m curious what brand of box awning you have. It looks very similar to my Fiamma 45S The fiamma awnings, like any other box type awnings are rubbish in my opinion and the anti flap kit on ours is useless. It doesn’t attach with a metal bracket and pin as does your one , but merely sits on a plastic grooved piece and cheap plastic bracket on the van end, it’s useless. I’m so disappointed on a $150k hybrid and we have this rubbish fiamma f45s awning fitted. So please tell me what brand awning you have, I’d like to maybe adapt your anti flap kit to suit my fiamma awning. Thanks.

    • @empty_nestadventures
      @empty_nestadventures  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi, it’s a generic copy of a fiamma, just a standard offering from factory that is standard on the Jawa. As I said in the vid, 18 months and 1.5 laps and we’ve only had one issue where a leg collapsed under heavy rain (when we’re away from the van), and I didn’t have it setup properly

    • @ducfatsvideos.6293
      @ducfatsvideos.6293 Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for the reply. Do you know who makes the anti flap kit? It’s different to the one that Fiamma use. And looks better.
