- One of the world's top theatre organists, Simon Gledhill, was kind enough to share with us footage of his recent visit to David Shepherd's home in Holbeach, Lincolnshire which houses a 4/22 Pipe Organ.
Much of the instrument and the console comprise the 1936 instrument which comprised the Compton organ of the Paramount, Tottenham Court Road, now with added Wurlitzer and Kimball ranks. The instrument also features a Compton Melotone which Simon demonstrates throughout the video.
Simon plays us a lovely selection of music which includes:
I Feel a Song Coming On (Jimmy McHugh)
With a Song in My Heart (Richard Rodgers)
This Night was Made for Love (Jerome Kern)
(I Like New York in June) How About You? (Burton Lane)

Video recorded and edited by John Leeming for the Cinema Organ Society. Thanks to Simon Gledhill for his permission and David Shepherd for use of his organ. - Hudba
It makes me miss 'The Organist Entertains' on Tuesday evenings on BBC Radio 2.
I remember back in the 70s David Shepherd doing a concert at the Marsden Green Hospital on the 3/10 Compton.
7:16 time to 7:33 is amazing. I can't believe this sound here! Impeccable!
Quite superb, Simon ! A performance full of nuance - harmonic, rhythmic and in registration......If Robert Farnon had played the theatre organ ! Thanks for showing off one of my very favourite instruments in such impeccable style.
Love this guy! Dancing in the Dark from Essential Wutlitzer Vol 1 is one of my faves 😉👌🏼
I never tire of watching this exceptional pairing of artist and instrument! Many thanks to all involved bringing this to an attentive audience! Today I paired my Chromebook to my Hifi with Bluetooth and the sound was amazing....
Absolutely fantastic, playing & instrument! This must be the world's best home organ installation, or at least in the top three!
Wonderful just wonderful !
As a child learning the organ I used to hate the Theatre organ as all I knew was the Blackpool sound. Then I discovered Simon Gledhill, it transformed my view of these magnificent instruments. I love Simons style, his chordal instincts are just a joy to listen to. Thank you.
with a song in my ❤️ 🙏
I know it`s a hybrid but this organ is still one of the best Compton`s I have ever heard.
thrilling.
Thank you Simon, superb musicianship on a fantastic instrument. What more could you want? - other than more of the same!
Excellent Playing
In my very humble opinion, does it get any better? Nah. Been listening to Simon since he was 16 (at the 3J’s in Gomersal destroyed in a fire in the 80’s.). Can’t wait for your return to Saltaire. Thanks again. H
Wonderful Simon. Look forward to seeing this in concert once lockdown is over as I have never visited this venue which is so near my home City of Hull.
Such a great performance by Simon gledhill. A fine musician and performer showcasing these fine instruments. A beautiful sound.
Superb musicianship.
Fantastic!
Wonderful playing. Also the best filming of an organist I've seen.
Thank you, Simon. Very well played and recorded. Sounds very fine sitting at my desk in Dallas TX. We met years ago when you played in Wichita, Kansas. I gave you a ride following the after-concert reception. Hope to hear you play there again when things return to normal.
Thank You for doing this Simon, just Great! Aaand, Thank You David for "keeping the lights on" for Simon and sharing your wonderful instrument with us. Keep at it, stay safe; all the very best! Wish I could hear you play these on the Oakland Paramount Wurlitzer, in that room, in person!
Bloomin' marvellous! :) :) :)
What a wonderful treat, well done!
Incomparable, superb.
Bravo!!!!
MIGHTY FINE!
"I Feel a Song Coming On" is a great tune. Nice opener! Thank you!
Thank you Simon, John, and David! Cheers from New Orleans
I first fell in love with Simon’s playing after hearing a recording of I Feel A Song/Song In My Heart a few years ago. I think he recorded it at the Christie organ in the Walthamstow Granada? This should be his signature tune if it isn’t already, superbly played!
Myself and Michael just listened and enjoyed this. Thank you and we hope to see you playing live soon
Awesome< first time I’ve heard you. Great.
It's very jarring to see a beautiful 4 manual Compton in what looks like a small home studio. It sounds wonderful! I would like to see the audio set up!
Super excellent with very good interesting video
Geweldig Simon!!
👍...very nice
wonderful!!
Very listenable.
A mate of my knows Simon. He works as a manager in an insurance company. Not sure how he gets the time to play so much. It must be a busy life..
MARAVILHOSO!!!
Bravo Simon, I have so enjoyed the duets you did with this beautiful instrument and Richard Hills on the piano. A question about the makeup of the the divisions and chambers. It appears there is only one expression pedal so wondering if it is all one chamber?
Look forward to more , if possible on this beauty.
Yes, one chamber.
Isn't this the organ the infamous "Spectre on the Spree", etc videos were recorded on?
Indeed it is.
how can I purchase cds of this music? I love theater organ pipe organ music and I love to play the organ myself when I can find one to play.
Wonderful as usual. Is this the same organ that has the gourds?
Yes, there are three gourds, each playing a different note.
@@Simon-pm6mtThank you.
is that a pic of reg dixon on the console?
No, it’s Joseph Seal at the Ritz, Belfast.

A lot of People don't like the little ditties-Just get into it like the movie does like-hard and fast. Loud and action, There is a place for da to da , Thats me
I've said it before and I'll say it again: "Theater Organists are GODS (or, at least, Extra-Terrestrials)".
