  • Kurt performing live songs (Opinion, Lithium, Dumb, Been A Son) at KAOS Radio on September 25th, 1990 at The Evergreen State College in Olympia WA.
    I enhanced the audio from lossless sources. I boosted the EQ spectrum, expanded the dynamic range, and on and so forth. The audio sounds great. No clipping. No squashed audio.

      A couple of the secrets to success 😉 I think ego is an unfortunate part of the human condition. Especially with Kurt having so famously achieved what he did. It's amazing to me to think that not one fucking songwriter could top this guy in the 90s

    • @JazzMartian
      @JazzMartian  Před 5 lety +50

      As far as the mainstream I totally agree, and add that not just the '90s, but to this day. For me personally though, I feel that one songwriter since Kurt has at least been on the same level. That is Elliott Smith. But many days my opinion of Elliott Smith is that he is the the flat out 🐐. That's how good I think he was. That includes everybody from Lennon/McCartney, to Dylan, to Hendrix, to Waters/Gilmour, to Kurt and every other songwriter ever.
      Shockingly, despite his Oscar nomination for best original song in a film (Miss Misery), from Good Will Hunting, and live Academy Awards performance of it, he remains in relative obscurity. Not that Miss Misery is generally regarded by core fans or critics as his strongest musical effort, just his most famous. Though it is an incredible piece of work.
      He was an indie artist for all but 2 of his studio albums, so that sorta explains it. But considering his level of talent, the always consistently strong quality of his body of work, and him being a "favorite songwriter's favorite songwriter" the fact he never "went viral", continues to surprise me. However when I consider many factors (which I won't list cause this post is long enough) it does actually make sense. So I guess I reasoned this mystery out well enough for myself with my own post. Thanks @Jazz Martian. 😉

      Um Pixies? He even says after Lithium, "it's a rip off." He's said that when writing Teen Spirit he was trying to write a Pixies song. He was a fan boy whose band made it with songs he felt were just rip offs; but the public was too dumb to notice and instead praised his "genius." A good musician and songwriter still. He was one of us and the imposter syndrome was very real.

      Piotreq Ytrewqwe Calvin Johnson (the host of the radio session and the other person talking) said that, he doesn’t remember the two other songs played and he knows there’s a full version of the recording out there, he just doesn’t have it, the radio station has it in a vault and doesn’t want to be bugged about it so they just say it doesn’t exist but that’s obviously wrong

    • @camacaron06
      @camacaron06 Před 4 lety +20

      Piotreq Ytrewqwe Here are the notes from LiveNirvana.com for more info regarding it
      In June 2002, whilst on their US tour, the owners of this website chatted to Calvin Johnson backstage at a K-Records showcase in New York City. After the show they asked Johnson some questions about this much sought-after radio session, recorded for his Boy Meets Girl radio program.
      When asked which other songs were recorded besides Opinion (a song Johnson unsurprisingly did not recall) and Lithium, Johnson confirmed that D-7 and Polly were aired. Whilst he could not remember precisely which other songs were played, he insisted that eight songs were aired in total because this was the format his show took (four songs/interview/four songs/interview). Johnson was surprised that the complete session had not surfaced among collectors and lamented this on account of a duet he performed with Cobain on D-7 which he remembers as being rather good. Johnson insisted that his tape of the session was blank but thought that someone had to have a copy. (1)
      However, independent LN research reveals that KAOS are indeed in possession of a tape of this broadcast, but for obvious reasons they do not wish to be hounded and therefore deny its existence.
      Cobain intended this session to be a showcase for some new material; indeed, Dumb was also debuted at this session. (2) The song was penned in summer 1990, just before NIRVANA signed with Geffen. Cobain also wrote Pennyroyal Tea in winter of 1990, after the band signed. During the interview segments, Cobain announced live on air that Dave Grohl was to be the band's new drummer and that he had not yet informed Bruce Pavitt (Sub Pop co-founder). (2)

      Never noticed that before. They do, now that you mention it. Light strings are easier on the fingers to play on, and make the sound "brighter". They break easier though.

      Yeah a lot of left handed guitarists just flip around and string a right handed guitar accordingly. One reason is that left handed guitars are are relatively rare. Finding one they like, when they want it, is often tough to do. Kurt especially had this problem when he was poor.

    @: “This one’s off our new album”. Commentator: “Whose new album?”> Kurt: Nirvana’s new album, it’s called Lithium.” I've been reading "Journals" By Kurt, he mentions this encounter in his writings but I didn't realize the recordings were out there. And acoustic. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??! This is how it sounded in his bedroom as he was writing it. He and Krist were killing it trying to get a gig and this radio opportunity was HUGE for them. Crazy kids. “Dumb” feels weird without the bass line but this was Kurt’s vision, love it.

    Okay, this totally shakes up my entire understanding of 'Opinion'!
    Until now I had the impression that it was just something Kurt recorded at home on a cassette tape in his boom box, but now to hear that it was a live radio show is a revelation.
    At 1:58 there is a *_glaring_* shift in the sound that lasts for less than a second. Before, when I thought this was a home recording, I assumed that Kurt recorded it on a cassette tape that for one reason or another was stopped at that exact point and then sat around for years and years without being played and that section of tape deteriorated from being exposed to dirt, crud, oxidation, etc. and produced the effect we hear there.
    Now, hearing that this was a radio show and someone else was recording it, that throws my whole hypothesis into question. Granted, for all I know that might still be what happened, but the fact that it wasn't just Kurt hitting 'Record' on a boom box tape player brings all sorts of other factors into play.
    Long story short: I don't even know who I am now!

    • @patrickderp1044
      @patrickderp1044 Před 2 lety +2

      he had his guitar plugged into an effect pedal, and his microphone was also plugged into that effect pedal. he accidentally pressed it with his foot and the guitar and voice change and then he turns it off

      @@tothandrei "It's 'crack', not 'cry'. Stop spreading misinformation." The irony of you saying that to me kills me for multiple reasons. Go listen to an acapella of the studio version for one. Also stop believing that what you have always heard as the lyric (or preferred it to be) to be regarded as absolute proof. Also fan transcriptions are almost never 100% accurate. Another thing, the lyrics printed inside of the Lithium single are not all of the same lyrics that Kurt sang on the album. Lastly, it's 'cry', not 'crack'. Stop spreading misinformation.
