21:34 I've always loved that short instrumental piece of music right there at 21:34...wish it was a whole song length
:)
Do Samurai Jack :)
Tartakovsky took one look at Samuel L Jackson as Mace Windu and thought: "That is a man who pummels droids into scrap with his bare hands" and then he made it a reality.
And honestly, Mace in episode 3 gives the impression of a man who does just that, even though we never see his full power in action.
Samuel L Jackson, the level 20 Monk.
"DOES HE LOOK LIKE A GONK DROID ?!"
@@azertyqwerty8398 Say Gonk again, I dare you, I double dare you, say GONK one more time!
@@jasonl8681 Gonk
I will always maintain that the most impressive feat by *any* force user is when Ventress is able to *run backwards up a flight of stairs in a full length skirt while dual wielding lightsabers.* Holy smokes.
Only thing missing was high heeled shoes lol
For me: nothing has ever beaten this version of Grevious yet. He’s so much cooler than any other version of the character. Nothing else has ever come close.
Yeah, he's so pathetic in every other portrayal.
Yeeeesss!
I love the 3D version of clone wars, but man did they do grievous dirty.
He also has an *awesome* voice in this one.
before tcw filoni decided that he wopuld be the villain that never gets a meaningful win
I mean yeah he’s cool, but he’s not really Grievous to me despite that, a bit too badass, a good way to describe 2003 clone wars as a whole tbh.
The only thing in my opinion that would make Clone Wars Grievous better is if they had TCW/RotS Grievous' VA ([something] Wood right? I forget), since I really like Wood's acting + the vocal modulation, and CW Grievous sounds like he's talking into a metal pail....
Ahhhh yes I remember watching this as a kid. Before The Clone Wars was a thing, we had this awesome mini series. And before fans loved Captain Rex, we had ARC Trooper Captain Fordo. The most badass clone ever.
Every Clone Wars medium has their own unique badass ARC Trooper. Fordo was the ARC for this cartoon. Alpha was the ARC for the comic. Rex was the ARC for the 3D show.
If I'm not mistaken most of the group of Captain Fordo was also in one missions with Clone Comandos and some were selected to the Clone Assassin's Corps
@@Fordo007 But they're all Arc Troopers. The best of the best.
Genndy Tartakovsky's style of storytelling usually involves more body language and action, relying less on words
not all the time, necessarily. he's great with action, but he also only had 3 minute increment episodes to start with. gotta fit in what you can in that time
@@adambomber3384 I mean his newest show Primal is literally wordless and still excellent
@@adambomber3384 You clearly haven't watch Primal.
To me, Primal was a masterpiece in terms of storytelling! You can literally tells what's going on in the episode from actions and expressions and yet not a proper word was utter in that show!
@@adambomber3384 There's also not much talk most of the time in Samurai Jack. I remember a bunch of episodes that were almost completely wordless, or there were bits of dialogue here and there, or at the beginning and the end of the episode, or the first bit of dialogue only happened when it was already halfway through the episode. Pretty cool stuff.
Fun fact about the wolf Jedi they showed at 29 minutes 44 seconds: He was the result of a poll that Cartoon Network ran to create a Jedi based on one of three species shown in the cantina scene. Also, his name is Voolvif Monn, so it's a little on the nose just like Sha'a Gi
Lol Sha'a Gi was the homie
Although it’s accurate you missed to mention that it was specifically a fan who submitted it, and then that’s when the poll ran and they won
Less on the nose than Ima-Gun Di. 😂
What were the other 2 options?
I remember that! I knew I wasn’t just imagining it!
Calvin sees Fordo for all of 5 seconds and nails the entire essence of the character in one sentence, "HES SO COOL"
"He jumped to the other side of the planet where there's snow!" LMFAO Im dying 🤣 22:51
K’Kruhk survived the Battle of Hypori and Order 66. He literally survived throughout the entire Star Wars franchise till after the death of Darth Krayt in Star Wars Legacy
21:07 I died from their reactions to it literally just being a hammer
I like how the lightsabers interact with water in this animation style.
I had no idea y’all were watching this!! I love this!! What a wonderful surprise!
But a welcomed one.
It was the Will of the Force.
You could say that it's "A suprise to be sure but a welcome one".
This is a very pleasant surprise, although it makes sense they would do this eventually. I hope they'll do more Genndy Tartakovsky in the future. Well, I mostly would like Primal and Samurai Jack, but Sym-Bionic Titan would be nice too.
Gotta give a like for the Symbionic Titan reference, Gennedys forgotten classic!
Samurai Jack would be really awesome
I wish Sym-Bionic would continue.
@@angramainyu9220 You know, with Samurai Jack brought back for a season and always being quite popular, and Primal being well received and having awards and season 2 coming soon, sometimes I'd like to think that there's a chance for Sym-Bionic Titan. But honestly, even if Tartakovsky would have the freedom to do whatever he wants, there's no guarantee that he's even still interested, his creative mind probably already moved on long ago from Sym-Bionic. Also, I have no idea who even has the rights for that show. Still, maybe, someday, hopefully Genndy proves me wrong and brings back the giant robots...
I honestly think the clones barely talking makes them much more intimidating and cool. The newer clone wars does a good job at making them more relatable and human, but this one makes them out to be some of the best soldiers. I mean, when you think about it, they were genetically engineered and raised their entire lives to be the best soldiers possible, and that’s exactly how they’re portrayed here. They don’t talk during battle because they don’t need to. They can assess the situation, formulate a plan, communicate that plan, and execute it without saying a single word. It shows how capable they really are.
Modern starwars abandoned the idea of them as soldiers first and foremost. Which is really dumb given it's the whole point of the clones as characters in the films
@@robertogurrola7465 They then added the stupid inhibitor chip, which doesn't make sense. The ARC Troopers and more commanding Troopers had more independence than the regular, run of mill troopers in the EU. TCW was made to fit in to the EU, as it was made in 2008. TCW caused a lot of inconsistencies within that continuity.
@@FMK03 Late comment, but the chip wasn’t stupid. The clones were never evil
@@snackeater4990 It is. No, you'd know they were if you've properly watched and payed attention to the PT.
@@FMK03 PT?
the thing i like about K'Kruhk (the Jedi Grievous killed on Hypori with a Lightsaber strike to the head) is that he survived his encounter with Grievous, returned to the Clone War, survived Order 66 and the entire reign of the Empire, joined Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order and lived on 137 years after Return of the Jedi.
18:23
We get to see that ship design once for two minutes in the 3D Clone Wars when Dooku betrays Ventress.
and ventress also wears that same outfit.
I felt like padme seems really different in this, then I realised it's Azula's voice actress.
Grey DeLisle.
I find it funny Mark Hamill also voice fire Lord ozai
So we got a mother's son Duo that's also a father daughter?
26:29 - That's the best laugh I've had in a long time!
"The Dark Side's hard to read sometimes guys." Fantastic response
Best part about Durge: the guy was so difficult to kill that he had to be duped into an escape pod and launched into a star to finally end him and yet he still nearly killed Obi Wan and Anakin in the attempt.
Honestly is one of my favourite characters of old legends and still got his figurines when they were being sold!!! 😂
K'kruhk is one of my favourite jedi and his whole schtick is that he's basically unkillable because of his force hibernation.
I heard he lived well past Luke Skywalker and even into Cade Skywalker's / Darth Krayt's era.
@@FMK03 and if I remember he was also instrumental in the creation of the new jedi order as he did give luke advice.
*talking about Durge* “so he’s not really that powerful, he just has a lot of droids”
Eric: *side eye intensifies*
The best May the 4th present I could ask for 😌
This is the way
No questions ask 👍🏾
genndy tartakovsky is Amazing, you HAVE to watch his show PRIMAL its sooo good
Back back to the past, samurai jack
Primal is amazing, they definitely have to watch it!
Oh I wish they’d react to primal. The most under-rated animated show. Deserves so much more views.
Who knew Samurai Jack animation would fit so well with Star Wars !! So much amazing adittions to the EU like Ventress rivalry with Anakin, Ilum, Durge and that Hypori battle with Grievous...beautiful !
Think about it, the Jedi are already samurai in space, it fits perfectly
When the Mandalorians talk about how scary the Jedi were this is what they meant
It’s worth noting that Durdge doesn’t actually die in this he dies in the comics after anakin sends his ship and him into a sun where he’s incinerated into nothing
These are so timeless. Gendy is a freaking master at this shit. It's like Star Wars Samurai Jack! I wish there was more of this rather than the newer clone wars honestly
they shouldve let him bring other eu content to life. old republic, vong war, etc
Most of the jedi council did disapprove of Anakin's customised fighter - the Azure Angel - but Saesee Tiin actively encouraged it because he hoped to see some of Anakin's improvements be adopted for the production Delta-7.
I also wished they had brought back Durge. He was such a interesting character in Legends and was kind of OP too.
His backstory offers more context than what we got here. Dude HATED both Mandalorians and Jedi but hated the former much more due to what they did to himself and his mentor.
Durge was one of the best bounty hunters in the history of the Star Wars. Also note: his species can live longer than the likes of Yoda's for god's sake!
Not only that, but can heal too. Similar in vein to Wolverine but can bring back lost limbs like a lizard. Basically, he was immortal but still can be killed if you know what you're doing!
He got made canon in a comic again recently
This is my favorite piece of Star Wars media EVER
Fun fact: Padme is voiced by Grey Griffin (formerly Grey Delisle)
She also voices Princess Azula, Catwoman in the Arkham series. Viki Vale in Arkham Origins. Several characters in the Mass Effect series (Nassana Dantius, Kahlee Sanders, and Dalatrass Linron).
Oh and she’s Arcee in Bumblebee. And Barbara Gordon in Batman: Year One
This version of clone wars is what I grew up on, I've probably seen this over 100 times because I just watched it nonstop, it's so good
You could if you want theoretically watch the first volume of this show than skip to "The Clone Wars" afterwards. It would fit nicely going into it and doesn't contradict anything.
@@bryanferratt6598 I consider 90% of this in my headcanon, really any part that doesn't directly contradict TCW. They did such a great job with making it
@@bryanferratt6598 The first volume is set after The Clone Wars movie and seasons 1-3 of the show, as the 2nd volume's intro shows Anakin being Knighted. In the EU, Anakin's Knighting was set 2 years and 6 months into the war, while in The Clone Wars movie Anakin was already Knighted and the movie is set about 2 months into the war.
My favorite part of this series is sadly what was not brought into the canonical Clone Wars and that is how General Grievous was essentially the Jedi Terminator!!!
Why did that have to nerf him so badly?!?!
They definitely did nerf him. But the jedi he fought were weakened from days of running coupled with the fact that he was a new type of foe who wielded four sabers. He had the element of surprise and fear on his side. Dooku trained Grievous, but he's no match for a master if they don't fear him and know what to expect. Which is why we see him run so often.
@@gabrielcarrasco8414 To me this show canon. For the most part it does not contradict TCW 2008 and even fills in some gaps like Anakin's scar
Tbf it’s not like the Jedi weren’t also incredibly overpowered in this series as well
Eric brought it up in the discussion that later on into the script writing that George went “what if Grievous was actually kind of a coward?”
Yeah another thing that canon Clone Wars or ROTS never really went into but this show did was point out that he was also a brilliant tactician, hence why he is a general (Shaak Ti: “Never have we been outmaneuvered by droids. His strategy is without flaw”). In canon he’s just dumb and cowardly.
That Jedi star fighter anakin has is custom made by himself, those large engines in the front are hyperdrives, so he doesn’t need to use the hyperdrive rings you’ve seen obiwan used in Attack of the Clones
Eric's face as they try to guess what the floating pneumatic piledriver is 🤣🤣🤣
Fun fact: The shistavanen (wolf man) was voted by the fans/community back in the day on cartoon network's website. I actually remember there were 3 jedi to choose from and whichever won would get animated. I was a young kid back then, but I remember voting for the wolf guy haha. There was also a talz & ithorian (which get introduced later on anyway).
I’d love to see you guys react to Primal! I think it’s Genndy Tartakovsky’s magnum opus. It shows his mastery over visual storytelling.
21:47 Ah yes when Live action limitations dont exist and the budget is right , they can indeed be so powerful..."cough" Starkiller "cough"
Not gonna lie this series has the coolest version of General Grievous
I like the Grevious that we ended up with. I like that he's kinda pathetic and sad and doesn't have to be a bad*** warrior. Plus I like his personality more, this Grevious was just generically evil.
@@bryanferratt6598 I know I'm a month late, but this general Grevious (in my opinion) is more intimidating and not a mustache twirling villain saying I'LL GET YOU NEXT TIME!!!
@@nedalex862 But to me that makes him less fun. I like that he's not that intimidating and he's kinda pathetic. Makes him more indearing.
@@bryanferratt6598 true but he could have been both with an endearing character and a cool fighting style but instead they made him 4 in 1 Beyblade, but hey if you like love action more that's cool too
@@nedalex862 I love action and character as well, I'm not shallow about it.
I honestly wish the 2008 version was more like this.
HELL YES!!!!!!!!! The most awesome rendition of the Clone Wars. The introduction of ARC-77 aka Fordo the most badass trooper I've ever seen & my first introduction to Durge, Ventress, & Grievous. I can never get enough of this series. Volume 2 is just as awesome & for a long time blended so well with ROTS.
I’m so glad y’all are watching this, it’s so fun, even though it has a couple flaws now this series still fills in a lot of important holes in the clone wars. Love grievous in this too even though he’s OP. Shoutout to blind wave truly the CZcams goats
Congratulations on your marriage today Eric. May the 4th be with you.
Love how anakin just tanked a force push.
This show gave the Jedi MASSIVE feats of speed, power, and force abilities
Also Anakin vs Ventress here is by far the best Star Wars fight and it’s not even close
I will always remember that Cartoon Network promo narrated by Peter Cullen; and how this show introduced us to Grievous, Corey Burton as Dooku, etc.
just realized that in this show, he actually kills his enemies.
I know this upload is a little old, but im genuinely SHOCKED that Rick missed that Akira homage at 15:34 !!! The bike slide is iconic! Genndy is such a fuckin legend for throwing that in there.
Neat thing about these series is they've HEAVILY inspired 3D Clone Wars in terms of design.
Like, 90% of it.
Mace Windu doing rapid fire punches on the b2's is still the most hilarious thing
I like Ventress' fight with Anakin, but I like her snarky banter with Obi Wan in TCW even more
The best animated Star Wars content on Disney+ was released by Genndy Tartakovsky in 2003.
Ever since they started watching clone wars, I’ve wanted them to react to this. The face I made when I saw this… my day hath been made. :)
Grievous first ever appearance was menacing
Durdge and Fordo are the 2 coolest characters in this
Fun fact:
Jedi Master K'Kruhk the second Jedi to be cut down by Grievous, originally helps Like Skywalker with the crafting of the Jedi Order post RotJ in the now-defunct Expanded Universe canon.
6:47 that guy is such the coolest leader in the team lmao
We had these on DVD and used to watch them in our Star Wars 1-6 marathons when I was a kid 😂
I had volume 1 and 2 on dvd and watched them all the time
Me too. ^_^ This was back when DVD were put a lot of efforts with nice interactive menus and special features.
This is hands down my favorite piece of Star Wars media ever
So glad you guys are looking at this.
This series is some of the best Star Wars ever produced.
This is one of the best Star Wars midia ever.
I remember watching the opening scene at a friend’s house on a big tv and it was the first epic thing I ever saw
This was a great surprise. This series though not completely canon still helps explain a number of things. Great mini series either way!
Also a Samurai Jack reaction would be amazing.
2 Years later and Rick you are STILL special and loved
Saw a head cannon on Reddit that I tend to go with, that this whole series is from a regular civilians pov. Which is why everything seems so much powerful. Similar to how war stories in old times would be embellished each time they were told
I loved this cartoon when I was younger. I was sad when I heard it wasn't considered Canon anymore. They made Mace Windu awesome and I always loved the sequence with the Arc Troopers, they were so cool, I wish they had a Lego set!
FUN FACT (tho you probably know this already): Assaj Ventress was designed by the art department to appear in Episode II but she didn't make her debut until Clone Wars 2003 and has been a big part of Star Wars ever since!
This was my favorite when I was young. I used to buy the toys of Durge, Grevious and Clones at Toy R Us.
Congratulations Eric.
I love how at the beginning of the Nightsisters arc in season 3 of Clone Wars, Ventress had her design and her ship from the miniseries.
Separatist shows up with a giant brown machine: "An ant has no quarrel with a boot."
Mace Windu: "Are you planning to step on us?"
*Shortly thereafter when the giant mechine falls to the ground in a flaming ruin*
Mace Windu: "Ant...boot."
Now we can place this on the tier list.
Ah Star Wars: Clone Wars; where everything operates under the Rule of Cool and Grievous was actually scary.
Holy shit I can’t believe they watched this holy fuck IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
What I love the most about this series is the sheer scale of the battles. Something I believe the later tv show only captures a few times
Still the best animated Star Wars series, tragic that we never got a full series.
This is the best star wars series ever. It started off so many comics, introduced for the first time and immediately made characters like Assaj Ventress and General Grevious iconic, not to mention Durge, who were portrayed in legends comic for years based solely on this amazing series!
This was a nice surprise! I just finished your (The) Clone Wars catchup series a week or two ago, and in the early days you talked about reacting to this. So glad you finally have! May the Fourth be with you all
Sorta sad that Arron was the only one of them that watched the 2003 TMNT.
That show was great
YESSSSSSSS one of my favorite pieces of star wars
Bro these were my favorite movies as a kid! I’m so glad you guys are watching this! I had so many figures of the people from these like Obiwan with clone armor, armored Windu, Captain Frodo, the aquatroopers, and that one clone with like a turret on his chest.
So glad you guys finally reacted to this series, it doesn’t get enough love. The way I look at it is all of the events this it covers did happen, but they’re told as stories after the fact so some details are different or exaggerated like what usually happens in stories
I had this one on DVD when I was a kid and would watch it all the time
I remember watching these week to week and only figured out after the last couple of episodes of the series aired just before revenge of the sith released, and I found that pretty cool, I was 10 lol
I love Tartakovsky version of the between Episode 2-3. All characters shinned and Grievous was so hyped for Episode 3, but then all the media after butchered him.
I know there are a LOT of exaggerations, but i think this take of fantasy/sci-fy setting, trying to have fun and go beyond realism, trying new things without fear is when the IP shines more
Man I missed this version of Grievous
A surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one
Gennedy is one of the true Kings of story telling! I really hope you do Samurai Jack (Watcha!) some day
2D animation and the Cell-Shading or 2.5 D are wonderful to created some of the more violent and more fluent battles. Besides in this show we can really relate this Anakin to the Sith RotS version. Man even the dark Anakin of The Clone Wars is not near the level of craziness and morbid destruction. As the Anakin we got here.
Edit 1 The Clone Wars (2008) was created to fill a Time Gape.
HOLY MOLY. I NEVER THOUGHT WE WOULD SEE A REACTION TO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how Eric is the ONLY one who actually watched this series and the other 3 never seen it lol.
Surprised y'all missed the Akira slide at 15:35, it's one of my favorite scenes in the series
AYO? Not expecting this but I am HERE for it
these micro episodes are so great; I’m so glad that more people are watching them now that they’re on Disney+
Was always wishing for you guys to react to this series but never thought the day would come!
Now I kinda wanna see you guys react or rewatch other of Gendy Tartakovsky's work. Like Samurai Jack or even Primal when your schedule frees up.
Mace Windu was GODLY in this series
Ok what was better, when mace windu takes out those droids over that deactivated bridge or when he faces down an army of droids and blows up that wave maker?
I love how in this show the Jedi get more cretive when they use the force
Happy May 4th! Brings back memories. Love the Windu part here also Grievous was much more terrifying.
24:20 Wait a damn second... is that Azula?
Be careful Yoda! Azula's masquerading as a senator again!
This Grievous is a badass in battle, but the later animated version is the monster who'll order the cracking of escape pods, hide assault ships in debris, send suicide assault bomber drones into Coruscant, deploy defoliator shells., etc.
Combine the 2 and you have the definitive Grievous. This one is just a mighty warrior, the 3d one has the mind and sadism times ruthlessness.
