@@zackbuildit88 dude, tiny me was petrified of fnaf. I think what calmed in down for me were the pure memes but some things still get me
Also this game was terrifying
@@zackbuildit88 The first FNaF was terrifying. Later games got kind of ridiculous and the scares became second to the lore, but that first game was something else. As a kid I remember going to Chuck E. Cheese and watching the animatronics perform, and I also remember seeing them stand lifelessly still when they weren’t. It was an uneasy feeling, like if you looked at them or got too close, they’d suddenly reach out and grab you. FNaF 1 brought that childhood fear back
I could never play a horror game and I hate horror movies, but I love FNaF. Obviously, it’s cuz it’s not that scary. The fan content tho? Squimpus grabbed me by the nightmares lmao

Fears to Fathom is a terrifying game series, but the fear is lightened somewhat by Spiff's blatant attempts to get himself killed
why are you so correct?
That real fear... Is because you can TOTALLY see yourself getting into that situation... And the possibilities that arise inside your imagination start getting to you
See though... my brain has never had negative possibilities to those situations. Because the frst instinct in my brain since 10 years old when shtf is to attack.

Fears to fathom's scariness doesn't come from the jump scares, directly but i believe it comes from the constantly tightening tension that builds and builds until the last second, achieving this through nostalgic fears which you've learn't to be "childish" suddenly resurface with twice the horror since you dismissed the thought of something so seemingly impossible to happen to you in particular.
I got bored so i decided to edit after trying not to hide in the comments from sheer terror. :(
steven king talking about horror is ironic
This is how jumpscares SHOULD be used but nowadays people just focus on the jumpscares as if it is scary enough by itself, think FNaF 1 and how creepy it is vs FNaF SB where security bots jumpscare you left and right.
Thank you for the confirmation that it's all gonna build up towards a jumpscare. I feel a little less tense looking at the chapters now, since I know that the real spooks will only come around the end (edit - boy was I wrong, it came at multiple points). Although this is genuinely super unnerving. Five minutes in, and the memories of being home alone as a kid are creeping up. Key word is "creep", because holy crap is this unsettling.
That seems to be the direction most critically acclaimed horror takes. I mean even fnaf 1 relied more on the atmosphere, sound design, and lack of action over the iconic jumpscares.
@@imthecoolestguyalive Thats how i felt after watching others play through, i thought that only one or two jumpscares would happen. As you said, i was WRONG.

The whole time watching I thought to myself "THESE ARE REAL STORIES?" and it made it even scarier to imagine what it was actually like for that person
Still hate the fact you can't climb out your window in the first game when your mom texts that Paula is at the door
He's a 14 year old kid jumping from the second story of a house while an intruder is sitting in the house waiting unknowing of why he's there after getting a worrying text from mom saying "Do not open the door, stay hidden."
People don't think clearly when they're under stress, especially at that age and while you're home alone, and arguably this was the more realistic and the smarter decision since you don't know if the intruder is there to hurt you or just steal from you, so hiding is your best move.
@@WizardCraft-ox4pe Clearly, you've never been a teenage boy if jumping from your window wouldn't have been on your list of possible options.

probably due to the build up
38:57
this game gets you really good because it has lots of implied movement, where doors will open after doing something for a bit. Very simple, but it REALLY sells the effect that somebody is near you. It also uses a bit of hidden movement where just barely out of the corner of your eye you can see something move. I love it. Maybe it will get old, but I love the effect.
Modern horror game devs need to start taking notes from Fears to Fathom. Putting the player in a realistic situation while utilizing the proper methods of building tension = a solid horror experience.
I'm thinking this is probably what made FNAF so popular originally, it seems like every copy of it just went with "children's entertainment! Scary!!" When in reality it was the "you're working the night shift" aspect
^^^^ this 100% haha
note: try not to add forced earrape to your jumpscares, especially when the jumpscares are unnecessary cliches that you easily point out
i.e. "audio goes near silent while the person in focus is focusing on something and then *hand touches shoulder* & *hand jumpscare!1!1!1!1!11!* and then turns out it's an ally" cliche
though it should be noted these stories are certainly embellished by the developer to make them as scary as possible

You can watch the stream, he played it normally, then speedrun it, then played fears to fathom. The stream is called “horror for babies” or somthin like that.
He did at the beginning of the stream this is from! That's part of why this video is titled "the horror games that ACTUALLY scared me", because BanBan.. definitely didn't.
At 4:46 he says "this puts the bird to shame", and that's referencing the Opila Bird scene in Banban.

Seeing spiff play stuff wrong intentionally makes me so irrationally angry, and somehow so thoroughly amused.
Imo, Fears to Fathom's horror mainly comes from two places: pacing and realism.
Every chapter masterfully utilizes slow buildup through drawn-out, mundane scenes, sprinkling just a few worrying moments (like the person walking up the stairs in Chapter 1) to make sure the tension isn't lost and keeps on building until you either die or escape just by the skin of your teeth.
Even if the people submitting these stories are lying or embellishing details, each scenario feels like something that could easily happen to you, if you were unlucky. No inhuman monsters, no supernatural elements, just pure, realistic horror.
i freaking love how spiff’s chat just starts spamming LOAFF every time loaf shows up on screen, its like that one monkey neuron activation meme
as someone who goes into miniplayer watching fnaf 4 can confirm its horrifying
I refuse to believe there are actual people irl who do the exact horror trope of "ignoring obvious red flags because they assume it's a bizarre prank but then they realize it's actually not that guy"

No but srsly, walking down in the complete darkness to get a glass of water was represented so well here. That's exactly how it feels when you have to get up in the middle of the night and are parched, and you're scared to go downstairs but have too because you won't be able to fall back asleep unless you drink water.
The second one oddly reminds me of a time where I was staying at a hotel, and found someone asleep under the bed.. Yea.. Under the bed.. Another time I found a knife under the bed in a bag but that one was not as worrying as finding a whole person.. I do not know why the person was there but I called the police and just waited outside.. Did not wake the person because I was afraid of what they might do if they woke up. Not the worst encounter I have had.. But its for sure a odd one.
