After my deep dive into the historical inspirations for Fontaine, I finally have some fresh thoughts to share! So c'mon in, and let's get to know Arlecchino, the Knave.

    **NOTES & CORRECTIONS**
    - I know I swapped two the country/nation orders like halfway through the vid. Sometimes I can't read.
    - There's some confusion about the Khaenri'ah/Germany connection, and why it's not Mondstadt/Germany instead. This wasn't the video to go into that, so for now I'm basing my reasoning on Dainslief's line where he claims that nations are "built with steel and blood" which is a direct parallel to the speech "by iron and blood" given by Otto Von Bismark in 1862 as a part of Germany's unification efforts. There's a lot more we can go into on this subject, just felt like this one in particular was important to clarify.

@@annaairahala9462 Theres greater reasons than that even, like the Nazi's rather than Germans specifically were Gnostics they believed that God was the Demiurge and this is why they did what they did to the Jews(because they were spreading his lies), by extension if they were less hypocritical they should of went after Christians next. Genshin seems to be a flip on that where the Demiurge seems to have created humanity, though he's still a false god since he's not dragon kin or anything like them, he's an invader. If Celestia still is the Demiurge and he sends the nails down the cleanse the Forbidden Knowledge that would be related to the Gnostic believe that the Demiurge exists to keep humanity ignorant and stop us transcending.
Anyway this is my trying to sum it up, maybe someone smarter can correct this alittle lol. I wanted to add to "Iron and Blood", black and red are both heavily symbolic of Nazi Germany. Its referenced in other Gacha. I don't think its to far to suggest Mihoyo took alittle inspiration.

So, I have a little theory idea I've been cooking recently that I want to get out there because I haven't seen any theorists really talk about the Sustainer of Heavenly Principles since we've learned about forbidden knowledge and how she may be corrupted by knowledge that doesn't belong in Teyvat. When she fights the twins in the opening cutscene, one of her arms looks corrupted and her powers constantly flicker between red and black (a color that was associated with forbidden knowledge in the Sumeru archon quest) and gold (a color associated with the gathering of the seven elements/ the twins). The corruption could also explain why she looks surprised after trapping the second twin in cubes.

Kha'enriah has an order of knights called Schwanenritter. Also I believe the German army liked to codename their tanks with names like Traktor(tractor), which fits how Kha'enriah called their warbots Field Tillers, although I'm not sure whether that was a thing in other countries as well.
And also some Norse Mythology mixed in as well, like how King Irmin seems to be referencing Odin and stuff. Actually it does makes sense for Kha'enriah to be a mix of multiple nations and myths considering they accepted a lot of non-believers too.

I also wanted to throw out an observation that the decision to have Arlecchino appear in Fontaine is likely a reference Alice in Wonderland. In AiW, The Knave of Hearts is put on trial for stealing tarts, so having a character who - going by the other Fatui - will most often be referred to as 'The Knave' appear in the region that is known for all the trials it holds is... too on the nose to be coincidental.

Also, the countries that Fontaine is based off ran some infamously brutal witch trials and one point or another, so pair that with Fontaine being a nation run by a pretty ruthless court, and it really makes you think…

Saying that the war started because of the assassination is an oversimplified view of -well, highschool history...
WW I happened for several reasons - out of which the assassination just gave the starting date. There were unconditional political alliances made before (Britain France Russia vs. Germany Austria-Hungary Italy, and Russia with Serbia), which ensured Europe-wide confrontation (one, that was expected by all parties - since a long time). There were imperialist plans at several points, mixed with previously not settled territorial claims ( Napoleonean war) and "inner pressure generating" nationalism.
Russia was known to start to mobilize and pre-set the actual war first (after France granted its blank-check support)
and during that, it gave strong support to the nationalism-driven Serbia (who just wanted to become ... well.. Yugoslavia...).
On the other hand, Austria-Hungary (with its old, living-in-the-past, conservative emperor) waited for the right excuse to attack the expanding Serbia (which had claims to the same territories they did - local conflict of 900 years).
Germany wanted the local war victory of its ally (Austria-Hungary), as it would have helped its own "colonizing empire of the world" dream (since A-H's victory over Serbia would have weakened their allied enemies).
Russia wanted to expand South (and all the way to Constantinople) and France wanted its territories back from Germany, etc...
Again, there were lots of pre-set conditions making this war happen, and the assassination (a small event which happened a lot at the time) just presented a weak excuse to start.
Russia however was expected to attack Austria-Hungary and Germany on its own within 2 years (by which time it would have been basically unbeatable) so it was all inevitable. Obviously, Germany didn't want to wait for that...
And no, Hungary's war declaration did not matter as everybody knew at the time, that they had no authority over military decisions (being hierarchically under the Vienna parlament which was under the Emperor - the only one with authority to declare war). But diplomatic communication was a bit chaotic at the time so they did send a declaration letter - which received no answer....
Sorry if this all was an unimportant info dump to you, but I am annoyed by this highschool simplification, because it makes the WW I events look like a simple petty vengeance fight, while it was a complex and exciting web of power struggle - of a bunch of megalomaniac men, but still

As a german I always thought Mondstadt was more like Germany and Khaenri'ah was based on nordic countrys like Norway etc. There's a lot of german stuff and names like the cathedral, the food, the architecture, Klee (which means clover btw) in Mondstadt, also a lot of npc names are typical german like Anna, Hofmann, Sara and so on.
And Mondstadt itself is german (word for word translation is moon city, which reminds me a little of the three moon sisters)
Even though i know that they spoke something like german in Austria-Hungary too and
especially in the parts of Austria today, the culture is very similiar to the culture in (southern) Germany. So it maybe still fits.

However I do believe it is more likely paimon is NOT a seelie and rather a manifestation of the eighth gnosis/ the king piece, representing the “Omni element” , hence the crown on her head and the triquetra on her clothing that is used to represent any element in the tcg. This is also why the traveller can use multiple elements, because currently they posses the king gnosis of the Omni element.

Yea Arlecchino is definitely based on Raven from Honkai 3rd, aka Natasha in Star Rail, all of them have similar designs and are Russian women who own an orphanage that trains children to be fighters.
All versions of Natasha have a nurturing maternal side and a fearsome warrior side, everything she does is to protect those who matter to her, especially children. And she doesn't sugar coat it, she makes sure the children know that they live in a dangerous world and need to be able to defend themselves. Arlecchino sounds like the most extreme version from what we know so far.
Basically she's the head of Snezhnaya's Black Widow program and the trailer is hinting that she placed the siblings into Fontaine as a magical act, spies, there's a chance they are all modified child soldiers which explains why Lynette is a cat girl robot

What I always found very odd about arlecchino is her colors.
    Or rather, lack of.
Arlecchino is one of the most famous commedia dell'arte characters, even in modern days between media, oral traditions etc etc.
THE distinct trait of arlecchino is it's outfit made of patches all of different colors. Meanwhile genshins arlecchino is almost completely black and white, with some dark red tones.
This however is consistent with arlecchino's character as well as in many stories, he starts wearing monochrome clothes and THEN acquires the colors during the play and become rainbow in the finale.

I have another theory about Arlecchino. Funnily enough, despite how little the canon has told us about it, from her name to her costume design, you can dig up a ridiculous amount of information.
Arlecchino (originally called Harlequin) is a character from _Commedia dell'arte,_ codenamed 'The Knave'. Now, Harlequin is most likely derived from a mischievous devil, and in the past, people belived that he led a group of other demons to chase prople's souls into hell. Harlequin was depicted as someone with their face painted black (much like how Arlecchino has her hands painted black), which later on goes to explain the color-theme of black and red. 'Knave', on the other hand, means both a servant and a dishonest man. Arlecchino generally means 'fool', or 'clown'.
The codename and how Arlecchino runs an orphanage (for questionable means, but still), perfectly explains why she seems to utterly _despise_ Pantalone and Pulcinella; Both being men in high positions of power with wealth at their fingertips. She's probably _crawled_ her way up the ladder, and hates how Pantalone and Pulcinella seems to argue over such dumb things when someone is literally dead. She either comes from the lower levels of society, or the lower levels of natural hierarchy in Teyvat in general (nodding towards the seelie theory).
Onto her outfit (man oh man, I'm not knowledgeable on fashion, but damn the symbolism is obvious even to me): first off, references to wings are over the top in her outfit. From her coat to her hair, her outfit screams wings. And I wish it was just that; Her outfit also has two interesting tiny details on the front that were what captured my attention on first view; Two _eyes._ Folded into fabric of her vest in a super creepy way are two clips looking like eyes with red irises. Not just that, but the vest goes down to depict wings. Again. Her brooch? Looks like black wings with glaring open gaze obscured within. Her hair pin? Two silver wings in a cross-form with black wings, making a total four. Her coat? Wings. Her pants? You guessed it. _Wings._
Eyes and wings. Now what does eyes and wings remind anyone of? Yes, the original depiction of angels in Christianity (which all the fandom is agreeing that is associated with Columbina). Speaking of Christianity, hello literal crosses in this woman's eyes. That's completely normal and not creepy at all.
In short order: The woman screams angel refrences and now I'm terrified (and in love).
Could it be that it's because she's probably from the seelie kind snd, so, in some ways, an angel? The only confirmed winged creatures in Teyvat are The Primordial One, Istorath, Barbatos, and the Travelers (interestingly enough, the Travelers are the only ones to have been confirmed to own three pairs of wings). And oh, wait. Istorath is literally depicted to have eyes. in. her. wings. And Columbina has wings but her eyes are closed, and Arlecchino has an extra pair of eyes depicted on her outfit, but no visible wings... hm.
(Now hold. I'm not saying that Arlecchino and Columbina are directly connected to Istorath, but considering how supposedly Istorath had wings and passed them down to Barbatos, could it be that the moon sisters, which were also creations of The Primordial One, were also winged? And could they have passed them down to the Seelie?)
But putting that aside, you mentioned that considering the number of '4' symbolisms on her outfit and design, she's probably the No. 4 of Fatui Harbingers, which I'll put my money on. _However_ (because I like to cause myself headaches) consider this: How is number 10 depicted in Roman numerals? That's right, an X. Which. Is. _Everywhere_ on her outfit and design. Her pupils and her brooch and her hairtie and her clothing, this woman is a criss-cross of X. Just putting that out there. She could be the fourth (which would be awesome) but she could also be the tenth.

  • @TinkRomero
    @TinkRomero Před 10 měsíci +87

A Crack Theory of my own.
Arlecchino is a survivor from Sal Vindagnyr!
My only proof of this is actually from the Catalyst “Frostbearer”, which has a color scheme very similar to Arlecchino’s. It has an ascension appearance that I wish to point out as well. Before ascension, the butterfly attached to this catalyst, is white; After ascension, the butterfly is red.
I believe that Arlecchino used to have White X’s for eyes, but after her hometown was destroyed then revitalized by Durin’s blood, it turned into Red X’s.
Now! The Frostbearer has lore on … Sal Vindagnyr … obviously. It tells us about the Princess, who is the Daughter of the Priestess, how she was born under the Irminsul, and received its blessing. I believe that the Divine Nail destroyed Sal Vindagnyr, which made the Princess end up losing her life. And when Durin revitalized the Tree, it revitalized the Blessing on the Princess, revitalizing her as well. Only to awaken right after the Cataclysm, and to find her hometown completely destroyed and forgotten. Destroyed by the Gods, so in some way or another, she joined the Fatui who had a common goal with the Princess, and named her Arlecchino. (And considering her Dark arms being like a Hilichurl, it’s also likely that the destruction of Sal Vindagnyr turned her into a Hilichurl, and the revitalization reversed it.)
Also, during the Teaser, Arlecchino makes a point on “captivating the audience”, this might be something that Butterflies do, captivate people.
Also, one other thing about Dragonspine that makes no sense. Why would Durin’s blood revitalize the Irminsul? And why was it revitalizing the Tree with Butterflies?
The Frostbearer says a line from the Trees perspective, and the Tree is reaching out for ichor. Gods Blood. Durin isn’t a god, so that’s a weird thing to say, but what’s even weirder is that the Tree thought it was reaching out for ichor of all things … Irminsul has some kind of connection to ichor, which is crazy to think about!
The point that I almost swerved off to here, is that Durin’s blood is red. This is confirmed by Frostbearer as well, Irminsul Tree usually have a Gold or Blue glow to them, like the Ley Line Blossoms. (Morax says that Mora is his blood … so, his blood is gold!) The Dragonspine Tree is red, this is because of Durin’s Blood. If it was revitalized properly (whatever properly means in this context), Arlecchino would have Gold Eyes.
… and don’t Khaenri’ahns have Blue eyes? Weird, I’ll think about that more another day.

People were theorizing that Pierro is the crying mask constellation in the harbinger whell but what if the crying mask is actually 10th harbinger's constellation. So, which one of the upcoming characters have a crying tattoo under his eye, have ties with the Fatui and also first and foremost an "actor" like Arlecchino said? The "cracked" theory you mentioned about Sandrone makes sense to my eyes coz I've seen so much anime having marionettes or puppets have them act like the puppet themselves tricking people. I'm thinking the lines of their obsession with Guizhong to the point of creating a replica of her thinking she was so important to them that they want to avenge her. Afterall, everyone in the harbinger have their own true agenda why they join. The Fatui is not built by trust, but by power and control.

The thing about Serbia and black hand it's interesting. I also remember that I was learned in school (I'm from eastern Europe) that this organization had practice of recruiting young warriors that came out of ORPHANAGE (since they had no one to be around usually they took any work they could) to fight for their cause. Another thing is that entire relation of Arleccino and Sheznaya reminds me or relation of Karađorđević dynasty which was said to be "Russophile". They put very close ties with Russia during that time, where thanks to that Russia supported Serbia in a pig war (and later in 1ww) which we can point out might be anological. As Arleccino who is like Serbia will get intervention from Sheznaya or just harbingers and that might most likely have economic backgraund. Concluding we migh might see much more shneznayans in comming archon quests. I just hope it will be more and more exciting as we progress in story.

    Red(human) -> Tartaglia
Orange(automation) -> Sandrone (yep Sandrone is the only one with the orange one so I think she is more robot than human or immortal thing)
    Black(monster) -> Columbina, Il Capitano
Blue(imortality?) -> Pierro, Pulcinella, Pantalone, Il Dottore

But still arlecchino is himself a male figure but represented as female so we can't know for sure. Another cool theory that I made myself is from the story of arlecchino where he wanted a colorful dress bc he was dark and poor and his mom, who couldn't afford one, sew him the famous colorful dress. So maybe the dark arlecchino we see now will find her colorful side and become playable just like in commedia dell'arte? Good video

I too wonder why Sandrone is not featured in the teaser, Fontaine seems to have mechanical patrol guards, its city/cities have many mechanical pieces and machinery, Lynnette and Freminet have a lot of hints that say that they are some form of puppets(or artificial humans) as well, there is a huge building with a marionette symbol. All of these seem like a perfect fit for a harbinger that specializes in mechanics, puppets and steampunk aesthethics. Yet she is nowhere to be found... unless...
Maybe she is puppeteering from behind the scenes ?

    Ashikai, i have a question
Do you think that the Abyss Order will do some big thing in Fontaine?? Because i do believe so
Not only the Loom of Fate involved making Osial a mechanical god and Fontaine is literally the most advanced nation in Teyvat in terms of technology, but also the 3.8 event might tease some connections between Khaenri'ah, Fontaine and Hexenzirkel since in the play, the Dagger Bandit (that was also played by Kaeya) was from a land without light which might possibly be Khaenri'ah, the girl was obviously Idyia and tha mage Alice, but there is more since in Fontaine is also highly possible that Alice or other Hexenzirkel members might appear since Nicole is kinda an obvious guess to appear because of her name and Alice might also appear since she told us the story about the Melusine but i'm not so sure, but that's kinda it, sorry for not having to much theories about it :(
But i got and interesting one, the odd connection between the Twins and the Finality (or simply a higher form of identity) from Hi3, which might explain why, different from Star Rail, you can't have diferent endings in Genshin, because it's not us the player in command of the jorney, and yes the Traveller, because they are higher beings that somehow have something to do with Teyvat, maybe because they two weren't the only siblings of that family cough cough Deshret, or i am just going nuts, but i have been trying to make these connections for almost a month and i still have to work on them, so sorry if it is confusing :(
Love your theory videos Ashikai, your probably on of my favourites because you do a LOT of research to do your videos, keep up the awesome work and stay safe :D
Edit: Another thing that i forgot to tell is that both the definition of the abyss Twin to the Khaenri'ahns in the Caribert quest and of the Finality to the Hi3 humans is the same, with the same exact words "A being beyond or minds and comprehension", so, that also makes things sus :P

Mondstadt and it’s surrounding area is inspired by southern Germany; Bavaria and Baden-Wurttemberg to be specific. Those states are known for their (mostly meat, grain and potato-based) hearty food, castles, the Black Forest, their wine production at Lake Constance and their funny, seasonal, traditional festivals.
Linking the whole of Germany to Khaenri’ah is likely to much.
But you could link Kaenri’ah to Prussia, which once was a part of the German Empire way back then, if you take the Bismark quote into the view (like you described it in your pinned comment).
Bismarck was once the Prime Minister of Prussia and even the Chancellor of the Northern German Union. He has the nickname “the Iron Chancellor”still to this day. About 16 years after his death, the Great War started and with it the downfall of the German Empire. Similar to a certain great and powerful region/faction.

9:14 I've physically seen that specific hand! It's in a museum in Whitby (uk) and If I remember right it's also used by thieves, they would give a hand to a witch, who would put herbs in it and then they would leave the hand inside a home they want to steal from and it would supposedly unlock the doors for them.
Edit: I gave it a quick look up and it was supposedly used to "send sleepers of the house into a coma from which they were unable to wake" and that that hand specifically had it's individual fingers lit, and if one of the fingers wouldn't light it meant someone was still awake. Also you can only put out the flames using blood or skimmed milk

I wonder if Hoyoverse are pulling a tongue-in-cheek lampshading with Arlecchino's eyes: That she will "double cross" someone... XD

In the fontaine teaser you can see Arlecchino has what looks like a delusion in her upper back, it would make sense that her hands turning black is a consequence of using it.

Great video! The crack theory checks out imo. HSR has the character Screwllum, proof that sentient robots exist in the Hoyoverse. And personally I always thought the girl was the marionette too. I’m extremely interested to find out if that correlates to the thing Zhongli can’t open…may contain Guizhong’s soul.

12:02 Hoyo never did that tho. Signora died, Child never got redeemed the traveler still is hyper sus of them in every encounter, and Scara is still atoning his sins in the form of helping the best archon, Nahi nahi.

Loved your Sandrone theory, mostly because it aligns with my personal thoughts on the character.
I just hope that if she becomes playable, we get to see the "mech" as part of her kit. For a game with so many fighting robots, we're seriously lacking some playable mecha.

I’ve actually had the theory about the actual Sandrone being the robot for so long! It’s cool to actually see someone else say it!

I never expected my research into the Black Hand society and early 20th century Bosnian/Serbian politics to be relevant while playing Genshin, yet here we are! This is an excellent theory, and I'm very excited to meet Arlecchino in Fontaine!

Good one with Sandrone not being Sandrone. ^^
A nice confusing twist I'll be glad to see... and the kind I like to make play in RPG.
a bit more confused about Arlecchino who seems far far away from her character.
And as we progress in the story, plots and races pop at every corner opening so many new posibility.
Life and life creation is so abundant (easy) on Teyvat...
